The emergency room was bustling with doctors and nurses running from room to room.

Patients families were sitting in unpalatable silence. Some were crying, others were sitting waiting in agony for results.

The feeling of despair was thick in the air.

But me? I was numb. Completely numb.

I didn't know what to think or how to act in this situation. Should I sit and cry or hysterically track a doctor down and ask for my sisters condition.

"Ms. Wilson?" An unknown voice quietly asked.

I continued to stare at the floor, lost in my own thoughts. Making no move to listen to what the person had to say.

"Excuse me Ms. Wilson, are you listening dear?" The person continued talking but the words weren't registering in my ears.

What would my parents think? I failed at protecting my sister. Would they be mad at me? Or are they just plain disappointed.

A hand softly touched my shoulder. I snapped out of my daze and shifted my eyes over to the person.

It was a doctor. She was watching me with concerned eyes and I could sense the empathy coming off her. She gave my shoulder a reassuring squeeze before talking.

"I want-" But before she could continue, Cameron and his parents came running toward us.

"Mira!" Cameron ran over and crouched down, pulling me in for a hug. My hands lay limp on my side.

I heard Aunt Monica's soft cries and without looking, knew that Uncle David was comforting her.

However, the person who needs comfort the most is still lying on the operation table unconscious.

Cameron pulled back and looked me over. He made a move to grab by hands but pulled back when my sticky blood touched him.

He quickly motioned for the doctor to look at my hands.

She inspected them and called over a nurse to do first aid. The nurse cleaned out the glass pieces still lodged in my skin and bandaged it up. She started working on my foot when she saw blood all over my legs.

It got there when they pulled me kicking and screaming away from Elena.

She repeated the process and left when she was done.

I looked down at the bandage. This gauze won't do anything but stop the blood. The pain and scars will still remain.

But mine are nothing compared to my baby sisters.

Thinking of her snaps something within and I bolt upright without caring of my now bandaged foot.

Grabbing the doctors arm a little more tightly than intended, I started shouting out questions at.

"Where is my sister doctor? Is she okay? Has she woken up yet? What exactly happened doctor? Will she be okay? How much longer-" I was grabbed back by Uncle David who told me to breathe and give her time to answer.

I took a deep breathe and nodded.

The doctor smiled sadly. "First off, my name is Clara James. Regarding your sister, she is still in the operation room. She has been beaten up pretty badly and has a concussion, which is why she isn't awake yet. She has lost a lot of blood as she had been in condition for the last three days. I'm sorry to inform you but, she....she was..."

Dr. James took a deep breath before uttering words that forever changed all of our lives. "She was raped brutally and severely beaten. With all her other injuries, we can't tell how long she will be under. I'm sorry Ms. Wilson, but chances look grim."

She was going to say more, but the operation room opened and she was called in urgently.

My heart nearly stopped. Raped.

My baby sister was raped and beaten. For 3 days she lay in that condition and I was none the wiser.

While I was at some stupid business conference, she was in so much pain.

Suddenly a scream ripped from my throat and I fell to the floor crying. Everyone in the hallway turned to look at me, but I didn't care.

Aunt Monica's cry got louder and she fell to the floor hugging and crying with me. Uncle David and Cameron fell into the chairs looking dazed.

I felt everything pass around in a blur and my mind kept replaying the exact moment I found Elena. The image of she broken and battered body, forever etched in my mind.

We were eventually made to stand up from the floor as we were blocking the hallway and put to sit in chairs. We stayed motionless and silent, all lost in our thoughts for over an hour before the police showed up.

"Ms. Wilson?" I looked up to see two officers. One was a man and another a woman.

"We are here to ask you and Miss Elena Wilson some questions," The woman police officer asked. Her badge name read Anna Smith.

I nodded my head slightly and they motioned for me to follow them. I looked at Uncle David who lightly touched my shoulder and nodded at me to go. Cameron has been holding my hand the entire time and when I got up, he pulled me back.

I looked back to see him silently staring at the floor. Tears prickled my eyes as I pried my hand away and followed the officers to a quiet corner.

"Alright Ms. Wilson. My name is Officer Steve Lewis. I'm going to ask you some questions. Just answer them with as much detail as you can. Where were you the time of the incident?" He asked as he got out a notepad to record down the information.

I stared at him for a few moments before the soft cry's of Aunt Monica reached my ears. I closed my eyes briefly before opening them and answering his questions.

"I was at a business conference for three days in Washington, DC." I replied mono-tonelessly.

"When did you discover Miss Elena?" He asked.

"This afternoon when I came home," I responded.

He asked a few more questions and recorded down whatever I said. Officer Anna Davis just stood there looking at me sadly.

"Do you know-" but he got cut off by his partner.

"How is your sister?" She asked.

I looked to Anna and she was staring at me. Tears welled up in my eyes and I shook my head. I lifted my hand up to wipe my tears but they refused to stop.

"Lewis, I think that's enough questions for now. She clearly has no idea what happened to her sister and she is no state to stand here and answer questions," Anna said.

Lewis looked over at me but I was too busy staring at Anna with gratitude. He nodded and closed his notebook.

"We'll be in touch," With that he started walking away. Anna gave me a sad smile before turning to leave. I stopped her before she could leave.

"Thank you," I tearfully told her.

She smiled as she placed her arm on my shoulder before leaving with her partner.
I wiped away my tears before making my way back to Cameron and sat down beside him.

He grabbed my hand in his again and started smoothing down the bandage. I gave his hand a squeeze and he let a sob. I pulled him in for a hug as we both tried to ease each other's sorrows.

About an hour later, the doctor came out and lowered their mask. She had a sad look on her face. "I'm sorry Ms. Wilson. We are trying our best, but-"

I cut her off before she could finish her sentence. "No, no, no. Don't say I'm sorry. You don't get to be sorry. You can't be sorry because sorry won't fix anything. You will get back in there and fix her. And you can't try your best, it's not good enough. You have to be God damn perfect. She's only sixteen years old, she has her whole life ahead of her. She deserves everything in life. Please she's my baby sister, she's all I have left. You have to help her, okay you have to, you just have to, you-" I fell back in my seat.

I put my head in my hands and started crying. She didn't deserve this, no one ever deserves this. Uncle David came over and comforted me as I cried my heart out.

I heard the door swing shut after a few seconds and knew the doctor had gone back in.

A while later, Cameron came and sat down beside me. He had a sandwich in his hands and held it out to me. I shook my head.

He sighed. "Mira you have to eat something."

I shook my head again and pushed the plate away from me.

"Mira you starving yourself is not going to help Ellie wake up any faster. You know she wouldn't want you behaving like this," He said as he tried to push the sandwich in my face again but I slapped his hand away.

I shifted in my seat to look at him. "You want me to eat? You want to me eat while my baby sister is lying unconscious on an operation table? She hasn't eaten or drank anything for over three days. So how the hell am I supposed to eat knowing she is starving? How am I supposed to eat knowing she's in so much pain? How Cameron, how?"

He lowered his head, got up and left without another word. I felt bad as I watched him walk away but I knew he understood. Nothing mattered to me other than Elena right now.

Another hour later, the operation room doors finally opened and the doctors came out.

We all stood waiting in anticipation for some good news.

Dr. James smiled as she told us the news. "She is in stable condition now and is conscious."

I fell back into Cameron who caught me. The biggest wave of relief flowed through me.

Aunt Monica let out a small happy laugh at the news and I saw Uncle David close his eyes in relief. Cameron thanked the doctor and without waiting or asking if I could see her, I ran into the room.

The nurses who were cleaning up looked up when I entered, but made no move to stop me.

I walked over to Elena who was hooked up to some many machines with wires protruding out of almost every inch of her body.

She looked weak and pale but the steady beeps of the heart monitor told me she was alive. That was all I needed to know.

"Elena?" My voice came out quietly.

She slowly lifted her eyelids and blinked to adjust her vision.

A-am-Amira..." she croaked.

The sound brought me to tears and I lifted my hands and brushed the hair from her face.

"My sweet baby sister. I'm so sorry, I should have never left you. This is all my fault. I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry.." I cried and rested my head on her bed while I continued to sob.

"N-Not your f-fa-fault A-Amy," She said before lifting her finger and rubbing the back of my hand.

That bought a whole new wave of tears.
The nurses pulled me up and away from El and I started to protest before they said she needed rest.

From outside the operation theatre, I watched Elena as the doors closed shut.

*******************************
About two weeks later and Elena was discharged to go home. Her injuries were healing up quicker than we thought and I was beyond happy.

She had suffered a concussion, a broken right arm and a severely bruised collar. She also had multiple cuts and bruises throughout her body.

Now aside from the broken arm, dizziness from her concussion and the fading bruises, she was mostly better.

But those were only her physical wounds we could see.

"Here we are! Everyone out," Cameron yelled.

I snapped out of it and got out and looked up at Uncle David's house.

Did you really think I would take El back to that place where it all happened? Not in a million years. She would not be going near that place if I have anything to say about it.

Cameron pulled out our luggage from the car while I helped Elena up from her seat.

Putting her arm over my shoulder, I lifted her up and helped her walk.

When we got inside, Uncle David and Aunt Monica were already standing there smiling. Aunt Monica rushed over to hug Elena.

"Careful dear! She just came home, don't want to send her back to hospital for being hugged too tight," Uncle David joked.

The corners of my mouth lifted a little at Uncle David's words.

"Oh shut up, I'm hugging my daughter. You're just jealous I don't hug you like this!" Aunt Monica retorted.

We all laughed a little at Aunt Monica's words, even Elena. Seeing her smile, my own got bigger. It was the first time I heard her laughter in 2 weeks. I had truly missed the sound.

"Alright, let's go eat. I made all of my little Ellie's favourites," Aunt Monika said.

Elena smiled and allowed Aunt Monica to help her into the dining room.

Once they were gone, I saw Uncle David and Cameron share a look before coming over to talk to me. But I already knew what this was about.

"I know what you want to ask guys, but no El still can't remember who it was. The concussion is causing hazy memories and it's too painful for her to remember. We don't know who did it," I said.

Uncle David face fell while Cameron clenched his fists.

"Mira, we have to find the son of a bitch and make him pay. He needs to be punished!" Cameron said through clenched teeth.

I reached forward and grabbed Cameron's hand and pried his fists open.

"I do too Cam, but we have no leads. Unless El remembers something, we just have to let the police do their job," I said as I let go of his hand and ran it through my hair.

The day after Elena had regained consciousness, the same two police officers showed up to take Elena's statement.

Officer Anna was the one asking Elena questions while she made officer Lewis stand outside. For that I was extremely thankful. However, Elena had asked me to wait outside and although I protested, she explained she didn't want me knowing the details.

When Anna was finished, she came out and looked rather upset.

"She can't remember anything. The concussion did a number on her. And we can't even conduct a medical examination as it's been days," she had said.

I was frustrated and mad at this news, but right now my focus was on making sure Elena was physically, mentally and emotionally stable. I was confidant the police would do their job.

"David, Cameron and Amira! Get your butts in here right now or I'll spit in your food!" Aunt Monica yelled from the kitchen.

We all looked at each other and ran to the dining room. Aunt Monica's threats aren't to be taken likely.

After lunch, we decided to watch a movie to distract Elena and preoccupy her mind.

But while everyone else was focused on the movie, I was watching Elena. She was smiling at the sad scenes and tearing up at the funny scenes.

I wasn't the only one who noticed. Cameron looked me at me with a concerned expression etched on his face.

I pulled in Elena for a hug. She froze at the contact but soon relaxed when she realized it was just me.

Once the movie ended, Uncle David and Cameron left for the office as they had work while Aunt Monica had to leave to visit a sick friend. They actually tried to stay but I kicked them out.

Me and Elena were left alone. I was finally able to talk to her without any interruptions.

"El?" I called to her softly.

She slowly lifted her head from my shoulder. I could see pain in her eyes and it made my heart ache at the sight. What I wouldn't give to take back time right now.

"Want to help me look for a new house?" I asked.

She blinked at me and turned away from me pursing her lips.

"If you don't want to that's okay. I'll-"
I made a move to stand up but she grabbed my hand and gently pulled me back down.

"Amy, its not that I don't want to. Its just...I don't want to run and hide. That's our home big sis, our parents home. We can't leave it. Yes now it's tainted, but we can try and remove it. I know you have been watching me when you think I'm not watching. I see you tearing up and blaming yourself for this. But it's not your fault. You couldn't have known something like this would happen. That I would-" She stopped and shut her eyes before she continued. "That I would be raped."

I winced at this word but she continued anyways.

"What happened, happened. You and I can't change that as much as we want. I may have been acting a little differently but that is going to stop. I'm going to move on and so are you. We can be happy and we will be. Now give me a smile please," She said.

I saw she had tears at the corner of her eyes but she refused to let them fall.

She tugged my arm and started shaking it. "Come on, a smile. Please, please."

I couldn't help but crack a grin at her behaviour.

"Ew. What is that? You call that a smile? Come on the joker smiles better than you," She teased as she bit her lip to stop herself from laughing.

I gasped. "You did not just say that."

She smirked. "Oh but I did. Whatcha gonna do now?"

Grinning wickedly, I started tickling her side.

"Hey! Ha ha ha... you can't..ha ha..do that...OMG stop!" She burst out laughing before doubling over in pain.

I pulled my hand back immediately. I started panicking thinking I had hurt her before she went back to laughing.

"Just kidding!" She started tickling me with her good hand and I started laughing and moving away from her.

"Hey! El, s-st-stop...p-please!" I was wheezing from the tickling and after what felt like ages, she stopped.

We laughed at ourselves for while before sobering up.

"I love you baby sis," I said as I brushed the hair out of her face and kissed the top of her head.

She wiped the tears from her eyes and smiled at me. "I love you too big sis."

*******************************
A month had passed since the incident and we have been slowly getting back into the pace of life.

Elena had somehow convinced to go back home after lots of arguing and hesitation on my part. But that doesn't mean I would leave her alone.

I decided to work from my office at home and have Diana send over all the files and other paperwork.

No one in the company knows the reason for my decision. Whatever had happened has been kept quiet and I couldn't be more grateful.

Elena doesn't need the media contorting the facts and constantly bothering her.

I have also put off house hunting for the time being. Elena is adamant that she won't leave the house.

"Our parents memories are there Amy. Their love and and warmth in that home that they built together. I'm not moving. Not now, not ever." She had said.

I had fallen into her words at the time but put off going home. Although 2 weeks later, she had said she wanted to go home. And no matter how hard we all tried, she wouldn't relent. We told her this was home and she shouldn't go back to the place where the memories will haunt her. She had said that if the memories weren't there for her to recall in the first place, then haunting is out of the question.

She had stumped us with that and eventually we had to give in. We couldn't deny her the chance to be normal. Because try as I might to convince her otherwise, that was our home, even if it had been tainted.

So last week, we had moved back in after confirming with the police that it was okay to do so. Officer Anna had been surprised that we were moving back in but also impressed with the courage Elena was displaying.

I did however, have a cleaning company go in and scrub the place entirely clean.
And since then I have been working from home.

But right now I was stressed because a client was being relentless. They insisted I meet with them or they won't deal with our company.

Normally, I wouldn't have given a damn. But the shareholders said they would take our company to new heights and we must do whatever it takes to finalize the deal with them.

"Amy! Just go to the god damn meeting," Elena had been trying for the hour to convince me to go.

"El, I said a thousand times that I am not going. So end of discussion," I replied before grabbing a file and working through it.

Elena stormed
