It is a short story of around 3000 words, ideal for bedtime, which can be started and finished in one telling. When the animals hear that the zoo may be closing they are naturally concerned but work together to find out why and then come up with a plan they hope will save it. It demonstrates how breaking down, what appears to be a big problem, into smaller objectives can make things more manageable. The animals not only co-operate to find out why the zoo may close, because visitor numbers have fallen, due to seagulls stealing food out of people's hands, but also to implement a plan in an attempt to keep it open. This involves negotiating with the local seagulls. Thus demonstrating the use of compromise for the benefit of the majority. The animals manage this by holding meetings. At these meetings, only one animal speaks at a time, and interruptions are not allowed. The animals listen to what anyone who wants to speak has to say and all have an equal vote, thus showing respect for each other without prejudice.
