The Governor's Daughter
As she suddenly came back to the present from her reverie, she heard the rain falling outside. A flicker of lightning lit up the room."I won't make you stay. You're a big girl, Kristie, and you can do what you want," Jacob was saying. As he held her wrists, a smile played across his lips. Kristin pulled away. Her dad used to call her Kristie, and the sound of the nickname made her wince with pain. "I don't think I will stay then, Mr. Brantley," she said abruptly. But as she turned away from him, a loud peal of thunder made every brick and board in the house shake. A window crashed in the front room, and rained poured in. "Get to the wine cellar!" Jacob shouted. The two ran out the front door, through the howling wind toward the underground cellar, about 200 feet away, which housed a vintage wine press as well as many wines that Jacob had collected. Jacob unlocked the door and Kristin rushed down the steps into the cellar. After locking and bolting the door, Jacob ran after her. The two stopped in the middle of the underground room, panting as they tried to catch their breath. After a few moments, Kristin asked, "What are we going to do? I'm afraid that the house will collapse and we'll have no where to go." Jacob ran his fingers through his thick, brown hair. He listened as the rain pelted the metal roof of the underground building. The wind moaned and shrieked outside. "Just stay with me, Kristin. I'll keep you safe."…
