Today was the day I'd been waiting months for, the day of Luke's trial. All four of us had walked in the court room hand in hand, and taken our seats in the front row. I'd insisted on getting here early, so we could get decent seats so I could see the whole thing up close through my very own eyes. All of this still seemed surreal, it was only a few months ago that I was trapped in Luke's hold. That each and everyday I experienced his physical and emotional abuse – a nightmare I never thought I could've ever escaped.

I had full belief today in the justice system, I believed that Luke was and is a criminal. He was the devil in disguise, and somehow he would receive the bad that he had entailed onto me. Whether that was behind bars, or out in the real world – who knows? All I had to do was believe that whatever happens today, is for the best.

All eyes in the court room fell towards the door opening in the far right corner, silencing everybody around us. Hunter squeezed my hand harder, almost trying to ease the pain of Luke entering the room. Luke was dressed smartly in a navy suit, and black formal shoes; any other person, a stranger would assume he was innocent. After all he was just a teenage boy, dressed in a suit stood in a court room; he looked just like any other teenager; he looked normal.

"Woman beater!" Someone shouted behind me, the sudden loud noise making me wince in fear.

Liam shifted beside me, curiously peering over the rows of chairs in the audience.

"You're not going to believe this," Liam whispered, his eyes beginning to bulge out of his head.

"What?" I croaked, my heart began to pound in my chest – Luke's eyes searched round the room, before finally landing on mine.

Suddenly everyone around me went silence – all that I could see was him. The blue eyes I once fell for, the brown hair that I'd run my fingers through after a long day at school. He was the person who I used to lay beside in bed, exchanging warmth whilst a cold, rainy day blustered outside. He was the boy who once wiped my tears away when I cried, and soothed me with his hushed whispers. He was the boy who bought me flowers for our anniversary, and cute jewellery for my birthday. Luke was my first love; my first everything.

And the truth is, your first love – it sticks with you because they are the only person who will ever receive all of you. After your very first heartbreak, you learn – you know better to not let anybody in as close, you know better to not exchange every secret and to not put all your trust into one person for it to one day be shattered. The worst part of it all, is that no matter how hard you try a piece of you will forever remain left behind in the person you first loved; a piece of you that no future lover, or partner could ever receive.

That one piece it holds your innocence, it holds your belief in love and that it can really last forever. It holds the friendship, the pain, trial and error, the first kiss and the one night together where you gave them everything that you can never get back. You see that one piece of you, it holds your youth and everything you thought love would be – it was everything that was proved wrong. Luke had that piece, and he'd have it forever.

"Grace?" Hunter nudged my shoulder, bringing me back to life.

I gaped at him, oblivious to what I had missed.

"Did you hear what Liam said?" He continued, beginning to rub soothing circles round my open palm.

Contently, I sighed. "No, what's going on?"

"The person who just shouted woman beater, that was Olivia." Liam informed me, "By some sort of miracle she must of finally realised the truth."

I turned round, my eyes instantly connecting with Olivia's. She was dressed in a formal skirt and blouse, her blonde hair all done up neatly in a bun; as she realised I was staring, she smiled. Somewhat, sympathetically.

A part of me wanted to get up and run over to her, wrap my arms around her and tell her the time we'd not spoken was no longer relevant. But it was. We were in the court room awaiting to see my ex boyfriends trial results for crying out loud. She'd left me in my time of need, when I needed people around me the most. I used to believe Liv would've been there for me through thick and thin, and as much as I wanted to forgive her – a part of me right now still couldn't. But her turning up here and supporting me, well that was a start.

"Mr Jones, please tell us about the incident between Grace and Luke that happened during school hours which you witnessed." Jame's, our lawyer requested, instructing Leo to inform the room of his eyewitness account of what had happened.

"Grace and I we have math lessons together - on that day Luke was waiting outside the door for Grace. At the time I was aware of the abuse that Grace had been dealing with, so I told her I'd wait in the classroom and I'd watch through the window to make sure she was okay." Leo inhaled, taking a moment of look at all the faces that filled the room.

"Please tell us what happened after Grace left the room, Mr Jones." James continued, taking pieces of paper out of his briefcase as he spoke.

"You could tell just by looking at them both that they were arguing, I could only see Luke's face but he looked furious at her. I mean obviously we all get angry, but Luke looked seething and it did not look like your typical teenage argument. I turned round for one moment, just to get my backpack and then by the time I looked again - they were gone. I quickly panicked, and ran out of the room to find them." Leo continued, his eyes filling with guilt and tears.

I'd always known he'd blamed himself, that he thought he could've prevented the attack if he had of been watching more carefully. But I'd told him many times, that if it hadn't of been then at school - it would've been later once Luke and I got back to my parent's house and then I definitely would not of had anyone there to save me.

"And, did you find them?" Jame's asked rhetorically, he already knew the answer - but this was Jame's game. His technique to win, and why he was known as the best.

"I did." Leo croaked, "I walked into the bus shed at the back of the school, and I thought I was too late. Luke had his hands wrapped round Grace's neck so hard she was unconscious, she looked lifeless - I thought she was dead."

"What did you do once you realised what was going on, Mr Jones?"

"I pulled Luke off of Grace, and Grace came round and I took her to the nurse's office. I thought removing her away from the situation was the best thing to do?" Leo somewhat asked, almost asking for approval of his actions.

"That was the right thing to do, Mr Jones. Anybody in your situation would've done the same thing." Jame's smiled towards Leo, indicating to all of us that he had done a good job.

"Would the jury please watch evidence piece number 2. This is the CCTV footage of the school grounds, at the time of the incident described by Mr Jones." Jame's instructed, pushing the DVD into the player and pressing play on the remote.

Gasps filled the room as the black and white image of Luke's assault on me appeared on the screen. It was all there in video form, solid proof of Luke's domestic assault and attempted murder charges. Luke stood no chance anymore, because his secret was finally out.

Content seeped into my bones as everybody now saw Luke the way that I did; evil.
