❛ funny thing about this heart of mine;
it knows what it wants. ❜

RIVER WRITHED HIS hands nervously, tapping them against the steering wheel of his truck as he proceeded down the road, exiting the rural parts of the city and entering into the suburbs.
It had been four days since he last saw Ronnie and not a moment has passed that he had forgotten about that kiss. It was a simple cheek kiss that shouldn't have endeavored that much of an affect on him—but as always anything pertaining to her made him putty in her hands.
He vividly remembered every detail; how soft her lips were when they pressed against his cheek, how her sticky lipstick left an imprint on the right side of his face, how her cool breath sent shivers down his spine.
Everything between them was becoming more complicated. Every time he tried to stop thinking about her, he'd instantly get reeled back in. If he was being completely honest—this was starting to terrify him. River never developed a crush on anyone this fast, especially since this is his first time being interested in a woman in years.
And at times he would look into Ronnie's eyes and he'd almost be certain that she too felt the connection between them. But she never acted upon them and that would be the gut wrenching reminder to River that they were only friends.
River's pickup truck eased along the smooth gravel roads, trudging uphill to the small gated community that she lived in. River hadn't been back to Ronnie's house since she first rescued him from that alley, even then he never fully acknowledged how superb the houses were.
It seemed as if she lived in Bel-Air compared to the slums of his neighborhood. He followed the directions the security guard led him to and drive down the long street, pulling into Ronnie's driveway.
Looking around at the scenery and the outside of the house, River inhales a deep breath and releases it as he walks along the pathway that led to the stairs. In his hands he held a small bouquet of flowers. Earlier today when he was getting dressed, Teddy had cane over bombarding him with a plethora of non ending questions about Ronnie.
River didn't give him too much insight, just that they'd been friends for a short period of time and that he was preparing to go over her house. Of course, that only alluded Teddy to start making jokes claiming that the two of them were going to engage in sexual activities together.
River rolled his eyes, chastising his friend and negating that claim while he continued to dressed.
He finally makes it to the front door. River runs a hand over his clothes and through his tousled hair before bringing a hand up to knock. He waits patiently, wiping his sweaty hands on his pants and shifting his weight between his feet.
It's only seconds later when he hears soft pattering of footsteps drawing near. River fixes his shirt once more just as the door is being pulled open. Ronnie appears in the doorway—a smile on her lips, hair flowing past her shoulders and wearing a dress that seemingly complimented her figure.
"Right on time." She pulls the door open and stepped aside, allowing him to enter her abode. He smiles in return as he steps inside, instantly feeling the cool air brushing against his skin.
"I got these for you—I know this is not a date or anything, um, I figured I'd bring something and these are the only thing that came to mind." He relishes, handing over the bouquet and nervously watching as she takes them in her hands.
Ronnie brings the flowers up to her nose and inhales the scent, a soft smile appears on her lips. "Thank you, River. They're beautiful, I'll go put them in some water."
He trailed behind her as she led him through the living room and into the kitchen. "You look nice. I'm starting to feel undressed compared to you." He states, half-jokingly as he looked down at his blue sweater, denim jeans and dusty pair of hightop converse shoes.
"You're not underdressed, okay? You look fine." She assured him, making him blush slightly at the compliment. He sits down at the counter, sliding into a stool as he sat back and watched Ronnie fill a vase with water and insert the flowers inside. She turned around, placing the vase in the middle of the counter before glancing up at him.
"I think this just made my kitchen look a million times nicer."
River chuckles softly, "I agree."
"So, I went to the store earlier and bought all of the groceries we need in order to cook." She walks to the refrigerator and begins to pull out the groceries. "I also stopped by this store that sells vegan friendly food and bought some things from there as well."
River appreciated the gesture but he also didn't want Ronnie to feel pressured into having to cook vegan food just because he liked it. "You didn't have to do that."
"No, but I wanted to. I was hoping that you'd teach me a few recipes you learned from in that cookbook that stew you made last time was incredible." Ronnie finishes taking all the needed ingredients out of the fridge.
She turns to River and clasps her hands together. "Okay, I'm ready to cook!" He chortles at her excitement as he slides his body out of the stool. He gently sets his jacket aside before walking over to where she was.
♡
"So wait, he just ditched you without even paying for dinner?" He asked, baffled by the fact that a guy would ever run out on her. They were sitting down on her plush couch, full off of the delicious meal that they'd just eaten.
River assumed that he would be too timid to even proceed through the night without embarrassing himself, but somehow everything managed to go perfectly fine.
Teaching Ronnie how to cook was probably one of his favorite moments that he shared with her—everything seemed natural and there was no awkwardness between them. It was just good, light, giggling fun. A night that he would always remember.
Just like before, they finished the evening off with small conversations on the couch. Ronnie was currently informing him about the last guy she dated, Martin who cowardly ran out on her in the middle of their date.
Ronnie laughs, nodding her head as she runs her fingers through her long locks. "Yep, not to mention it was also Valentines Day. God, I was so embarrassed everyone in the restaurant was just looking at me sympathetically. The waiter even gave me a free desert, said that maybe a piece of chocolate cake would help cure my broken heart." She scoffed as she reminisced back on the memory.
River started to feel bad for bringing up the topic of discussion.
"God, I need some wine." She mumbles before standing up and walking into the kitchen. She returns seconds later carrying two glasses and a bottle of wine in her hands.
"You drink wine?" He pondered curiously eyeing her as she placed the glasses down onto the table.
"On occasion but only because I can't handle liquor." Ronnie plops back down onto the couch, tucking her legs underneath her body as she reaches for one of the glasses and begins to pour herself some wine.
River sat back, his hands were placed steadily on his lap. "Sorry, about that guy leaving you like that. No one deserves that to happen to them."
Ronnie shrugs her shoulders, sighing softly before stating, "It happens. It did hurt though because I really liked him, you know?" She pauses and her face softens a bit when she turns back to look over at him.
"Enough about me. Tell me about your dating life."
"It's currently nonexistent at the moment." River responds. "Well, it's been extinct for awhile actually. I've only had one girlfriend in my entire life." He sees Ronnie's eyebrows raise over the rim of her glass. She takes a small sip of the drink and sets the glass aside.
"Pathetic. I know." He sighs, noting the expression on her face.
"No, no. That's not at all what I was thinking." Ronnie ripostes, quickly coming to defense. "I'm just a little surprised. You're an amazing guy, it's a little shocking that only one girl had the chance to know that."
She stares at him, softly fluttering her long eyelashes at him. River watches her intensely, mirroring the same facial expression as her. His eyes flicker downward, where he sees her teeth gnawing down on her purple stained lips.
An unusual feeling began to submerge throughout Ronnie's body. The longer she stared into his captivating eyes, the more she wanted to feel her lips pressed heavily against his. Everything she said previously began to diminish from her brain, and she could feel herself starting to grow weak under his control.
He was just such an amazing and caring guy, those were the things that she adored most about him. As they sat there, captured in silence, she could see how nervous he instantly became.
Ronnie wasn't sure what had came over her, but before she could even think she was inching her face and shifting her body closer to his. She could hear his harbored breathing begin to hitch. She stared at him, maintaining full eye contact until she drawed near his pink lips.
She looked down at them, then back into his eyes.
River sat there stuck, watching as she slowly inched closer to them until he felt the light brushing of her lips against his. It was chaste, so quick that he almost didn't feel it. A soft gasp emerged from both of their lips.
Ronnie leaned forward again, this time pampering his lips with full contact. She moved her wet mouth against his, ravishing in the taste of his soft lips.
River couldn't move. For a second the began to think that he was dreaming because there was no possible way that he was kissing Ronnie right now. It wasn't until he heard a little moan escape from the back of her throat that he realized that it he was in fact kissing her.
Her lips were soft just as he imagined. They moved perfectly against his, and he could taste that wine on her sweet lips. He only kissed one girl in his life so he wasn't sure if he was exceeding Ronnie's expectations. "Am I—is this—ok?" He murmured hesitantly, opening his eyes for a quick second and pulling his lips back.
"More than okay." Ronnie quickly responded, coaxing her lips back within his. She nips at his lips, softly tugging at them within the grasp of her teeth. River whimpers softly into her mouth, surprised by how skilled she was at this.
He tilts his head and deepens the kiss.
Ronnie moves closer to him so that she's able to straddle his lap, tossing her legs around his waist and finding a comfortable seat onto his lap. River's eyes widen and a lump catches in his throat.
This was wrong—she absolutely knows this, but she couldn't contain herself anymore. She needed River and she needed to feel his hands touching on her, all over.
"S'okay to touch me, River." Her murmuring words traced along his lips.
"Y-Yeah?"
She reaches down and grabs ahold of his hands, placing them on the skin of her thighs. She shudders at his cold touch.
Ronnie shifts on his lap and wiggles her hips, he begins to feel the blood coursing through the lower parts of his body. "R-Ronnie." He tried to say but it came off as more of a pleading whimper. He could feel her smirking against his lips.
River pried himself away from her lips and pulled back, Ronnie looked at him appalled as her swollen lips titled into a confused frown. "Is everything okay?" He shakes his head, and gently moves her from on top of him. "No, it's not. I'm sorry, Ronnie I just I don't—"
"You don't like me in that way?" She finishes, looking down at her hands because she was too embarrassed to make eye contact with him at the moment. Ronnie felt like an idiot. She knew that she shouldn't have crossed the line with him, they were friends. Only friends and now she just made everything awkward and complicated between them.
"I—It's not that—you're an amazing person, Ronnie." He found himself stammering and struggling to construct a coherent sentence. Of course he liked her, God it terrified him how much he liked her. He enjoyed spending time with her; getting to know her better, and kissing her. It was just that she had been drinking, and even though she didn't drink a lot he didn't want her doing anything she would only end up regretting later, especially with him.
He cares for and about her too much to take advantage of her in that way.
"No, I get it. I completely understand." Ronnie quickly wipes away the tears that spilled from her eyes, hoping that he wouldn't notice. He did and he began to feel terrible. Ronnie wasn't upset, just embarrassed that she humiliated herself in front of the guy she likes. "I'm gonna go clean myself up." She sniffles, pulling her lips into a forced smile before walking away.
