I actually thought of my own AU, to explain it simply monsters power/energy is tied to a folwer(s) that grows somewhere on them. The flowers are connected directly to the soul so if you destroy them the monster dies.

Less flowers you have the more powerful (and harder to kill) you are, since less powerful monsters need more flowers to survive and can't use all their power. Most powerful in the underworld are Undyne (2 flowers), Sans (1 flower) and Flowy because he IS a flower.

That's the most basic concept of it, I won't be explaining it further 'cause I think that would be boring.
