Safaa felt a hand grip her shoulders, the hold did not scare her at first but when the person who held her began pulling her backwards forcefully she became alarmed, her heartbeat began palpitating and beads of sweat slowly began falling off from her forehead. The room was so dark and she could hardly recognise whom the person was, but when they ended up in the balcony of her bedroom, she fully saw the face of the one attacking her with the aid of the brightness of the full moon.

"How..." Safaa moved back trying to get away.

"Don't move an inch or else am dropping your child" Hajiya Turai moved very close to the edge of the balcony with Safaa's bundle of joy in her arms.

Safaa had no idea how she got hold of Yusrah, she let out a sharp breath before going down on her knees to beg her.

"Please, Don't hurt her, she's innocent, she has nothing to do with the fight between us"

"Safara'u! Do you think you've won? You think I, Hajiya Turai will ever accept defeat? You're wrong"

"Mama, I'd do anything, I will tell Yaya Ahmad to get you away from that centre, I will leave him, just don't hurt my child, don't please" Safaa sobbed begging Hajiya Turai profusely.

"No that's not enough, You have no idea how painful it is to lose a child do you? You made all my children despise me, How dare you!"

"I didn't Mama, Just push me down the balcony if you want but please let my child be, she's just some months old" Safaa whimpered.

"No I want to watch you in pain, I hate you that much" Hajiya Turai grinned evilly.

She walked closer to the rail of the balcony and placed a sleeping Yusrah on it, supporting the baby with one of her hand.

"Ya Allah, No please" Safaa croaked.

"Am mad aren't I? They took me to a rehabilitation centre and you think I won't get back to you, now we'll see who will become mad, I bet you're going to go gaga after seeing this" Hajiya Turai let out an evil laugh.

"For the sake of Allah Mama, Do whatever you want to me, but please let her be, she's just a baby"

"Just shut up, I hate people who talk too much, I have an idea, maybe it'd help you safe your child"

"What is that?" Safaa sniffed.

"I will drop your child down the balcony after counting up to twenty, you can be able to catch her if only you reach downstairs before I finish up my counting"

"What? But I can't reach there within that minutes, my balcony is at the backside of the compound of this house"

"I don't care, I'm going to start counting now, 1..." Hajiya Turai began and Safaa stared at her baby one last time before rushing out of the balcony.

She began shouting for help as soon as she came out of her room, but the house was unusually quiet, she checked her father's study thinking they were inside but there was no one to help her so she began speeding down the staircase, too agitated to realise she had missed a step and she rolled down the whole stairs, hurting her ankle in the process. She managed to reach the living room, the pain exuding from her ankle making her steps slow.

Surprisingly, Each number uttered by Hajiya Turai echoed all through the household and when Safaa managed to get to the front door, she heard Hajiya Turai shouting number seventeen. Safaa had hurt her forehead and she began feeling light headed, yet she kept limping trying to get to her child before Hajiya Turai reached number twenty.

Hajiya Turai saw Safaa limping and she smiled at how victory and luck were always by her side.

"You can't make it, I've counted upto 19 now" Hajiya Turai hollered.

"Mama, please I beg you, Yusrah is your grandchild, don't drop her down please" Safaa cried.

She was few steps away from the balcony when within a blink of an eye Hajiya Turai dropped Yusrah, the baby first landed on her head, on a flower vase made from hard clay, before falling down to the marbled floor, lifeless.Β

Safaa ran to her child, her tears blurring her view, she sat beside the pool of blood Yusrah was lying in, too dazed to touch her, when she fully realised what really happened, she let out a heart wrenching scream and hugged the baby.

She stayed there clutching the baby to her chest until she began turning pale. She passed out some moments after, with a dried tear on her cheek and a heart too broken to be mended by any being on earth.

Safaa jerked up from her sleep when she felt someone tapping her arm.

"Ya Allah, what just happened, where's Yusrah?" Safaa panicked getting off the bed.

"But you told me to take her to your mother Ma'am, You dozed off for a while" The maid informed her.

"Alhamdulillah, so all that was just a bad dream then, Ya Rabb" Safaa rushed out of her room and headed to her Mama's room.

When she found Yusrah sleeping peacefully inside her cradle, she sighed and scooped her in her arms, allowing her tears of joy to soil the baby's flannel.

"Why are you crying like that?" Her Mama asked walking out of the ensuite.

"Oh Maa, I had a bad dream" Safaa sniffed.

"Then thank Allah it's just a dream, my cry-cry baby" Maa smiled.

"Have you finished packing?" She asked Safaa when they sat all on the bed but Safaa was too absentminded.

"Safaa?"

"Huh? What'd you say?" Safaa asked.

"What are you thinking about? And I said have you finished packing?"

"It's nothing Maa, I am almost done packing" Safaa answered letting her mind wander off to the thoughts of the dream she had earlier.

She was still lost in her thoughts when a Maid came and informed her that Ahmad was downstairs waiting for her, he'd never failed to visit them since the day Yusrah was born. She checked herself in her Mama's mirror before carrying a sleeping Yusrah along with her so she could meet her father too.

"Babe are you not happy to see me You could have at least put on a fake smile before coming to me" Ahmad teased her when she sat beside him.

"I'm happy to see you Habibi, am just kind of moody today" Safaa gave him the baby without having eye contact with him.

"It's almost Sunday" Ahmad said cheerfully.

"Today is Wednesday my love" Safaa mumbled.

"Yes I know, But weekend is soon, You're coming home on Sunday, I feel so happy"

He continued talking to her animatedly while she only stared at him, the images of the dream she had hunting her and making her wish she could change her mind.

"Babe..." He called when he realised she was not even aware of her surrounding.

"Hmm" She sighed absentmindedly.

"What are you thinking about? Why are you so quiet? Are you sick?" He panicked using the back of his right hand to feel her temperature.

"I just..." She began but her tears choked her.

Ahmad allowed her to cry, because he felt it would make her feel better, he left her in the living room and walked to the nursery where he laid the baby who was sleeping in her cradle before sauntering to the kitchen to get a cup of water for his emotional wife.

"Here" He handed Safaa the cup and sat beside her, entwining their hands.

"What's wrong with you babe?" He asked again.

"I had a bad dream, it's so scary and it's still scaring me" She sniffed.

"I don't want need to know what the dream is about Safaa, but you shouldn't get worked up, it's just a dream"

"But..." She began but he cut her off using the only way he knew would shut her up.

She moved away after some minutes to catch her breath before glaring at him.

"That's so not fair, and someone might see us, what if Mama saw us?" Safaa pouted.

"What? We're married Safaa, and she knows how we miss each other, besides you didn't try stopping me, you enjoyed it" Ahmad smirked.

"Shameless" Safaa scoffed.

"Now we feel better don't we?" He winked.

"Shush, Tell me when Zarah is coming back?" She asked playfully pulling his beard.

"I'm just coming back from her father's office, He talked with her and she's still hell bent on leaving this marriage, she's just so stubborn"

"So what will you do now? What's his decision"

"He said I should go and think about Zarah's choice, he believes she won't be happy with me, with us, her conscience won't let her"

"Now what?" Safaa inquired.

"I don't know babe, I guess I have to give her what she wants"

"What? No, we can convince her again Habibi, We can keep on trying"

"You have no idea how stubborn Zarah is" He sighed.

"So you're just going to..."

"I'm just going to let her go" He cut her off, running a hand through her silky hair.

Living in the therapy centre was one of Hajiya Turai's worst nightmare, she never thought her own children could bring her to a place that would make her relive her past, something she had buried deep within her, a past she never wished to recall. The therapy she had been going through had not changed a thing, Safaa's hatred in her heart kept growing, ferociously and she felt like an angry hyena ready to be set free from her cage so she could pounce on her prey. She got used to imagining scenarios and she could see herself vividly hurting Safaa, strangling her until she's out of breath and making her go through so much anguish.

"Hello Ma'am, You have a visitor" A nurse knocked standing by the door, bringing an end to Hajiya Turai's thoughts.

She nodded and the nurse ushered a smiling Zarah inside the room. Zarah sat on the visitor's chair, her smile never leaving her face.

"You won't finish what we have started right?" Hajiya Turai asked before Zarah could even greet her.

"Mama, I hope you're feeling much better?" Zarah asked ignoring the question.

"Tell Ahmad to come and visit me, I want to see my child" She wept.

"He didn't come visit?" Zarah asked.

"He didn't, Oh I hate Safaa, she should get ready for me because I will destroy her when am out of here, I will bring an end to her" Hajiya Turai began laughing hysterically, making Zarah squirm on her seat.

"I pray you get well soon Mama, You shouldn't let hatred fill your heart, You need to let go of everything, you will be at peace if you do" Zarah advised her.

Hajiya Turai stared at her like a wild beast who had been imprisoned and deprived of food for several years, a kind of beast that could crush whoever it came in contact with the moment it's released from the cage. Zarah gulped thinking of how she would slip out of the room, Hajiya Turai terrified her. A deathly silence followed for more than ten minutes, so Zarah decided to bring up an excuse so she could leave.

"I think I should leave now,I have an appointment with my doc, I hope you get better soon" Zarah broke the silence and adjusted her veil, Hajiya Turai mumbled some incoherent words to her and Zarah slowly tiptoed out of the room, scared that if she walked out hastily, Hajiya Turai might strangle her to death.

Hajiya Turai opened the side drawer close to her bed and carefully brought out a photo, she hugged it to her bosom and cried her heart out, she wiped the tears and consoled herself, talking to the photo.

"Ahmadu na, You still love your mother don't you? You will come and take me away from here, Yes you will" She nodded and with the tears cascading down her cheeks, she began smiling.

Someone tapped her and when she glanced back the person she saw made her jump off the bed.

"What do you want from me? Leave me alone" She growled.

"Turai it's been years, we belong together, Come back to me"

"Leave me" She yelled.

The nurse who was in charge of taking care of Hajiya Turai heard the noise emitting from her room so she urgently went inside the room. She found Hajiya Turai talking to herself.

"Ma'am calm down, there's no one here"

"No don't tell me that, my ex husband is here, he's looking at me, tell him not to come close to me" Hajiya Turai panicked.

"Calm down Ma'am, please"

"Go away, Go away" Hajiya Turai kept repeating before succumbing to the darkness that wanted to engulf her.
