Safaa continued watching the rain after her Mama left her, She had been trying to stop her mind from remembering him but she could not, she felt the taste of salt on her lips and suddenly her tears began falling in an unbroken stream, clutching unto her chest, she buried her face under her pillow and cried her heart out. She was silently screaming, losing her sanity and hope but she did not care, she was not immune to pain as she thought and leaving him would not be as easy as she thought too. Fearing she might not be herself without him again, she cried more, not holding back the avalanche of tears overflowing from her tired eyes.

She had been like that until she had footsteps approaching her room.

" And the woman who decided to be brave is here crying herself to sleep" Inna, her grandma teased her with a sad smile on her lips.

"Inna" Safaa called her grandma, ignoring the fact that she was supposed to hide her pain from them.

" Yes Safaa? You want my advice now? When you didn't seek for it when you decided to tell your husband you want a divorce"

Safaa wanted to set all her nostalgic feelings apart when her grandma came into her room but she could not, not after her grandma was also blaming her for everything now.

" Inna you also don't get it do you?" Safaa sobbed.

"Then make me understand" Inna's voice softened.

" We are not meant to be, that's all"

" You silly girl, You don't decide whether you are meant to be with him or not, that's not upto you"

" I don't know Inna, I want to be away,Β  I want to be able to know what I want not what you guys believe I am supposed to do"

" And leaving your matrimonial home is what you want?"

" Not that am even in it" Safaa weakly rolled her eyes.

" Nonsense " Inna smacked her lightly.

" Ouch that hurts" Safaa pouted.

" On a serious note you know Ahmad is never letting you go right? "

" I don't know Inna, please let's talk about something different" Safaa pleaded.

" Well no matter what we talk about it would lead us to your marriage, get up and wear your Hijab, your Uncle is here"

" My Uncle? Kawu Sunusi? " Safaa shuddered.

"Yes who else? Come on let's go"

Safaa wore her Hijab shakily, the palpitation of her aching heart increasing with each step she took towards her Baba's living room. What could make her Uncle visit when he was still not speaking to her father? She kept hoping he was not in the house to patch things up because she was really not sure if she still wanted to be Ahmad's wife, not with Hajiya Turai wishing she could skin her alive whenever she set eyes on her.

"Assalamu Alaikum" She salaamed with her head downcast, the eyes she felt on her made her more uncomfortable and she clutched unto Inna's hand, silently praying the old woman would drag her inside the living room because she felt rooted to the marbled floor.

" Let's go in Safaa" Inna urged her.

" But Inna you told me my Uncle summoned me but didn't say his entire family are here" Safaa whispered raising her head a bit to look at the occupants of the living room.

Her eyes locked with her Husband's disheveled ones and for some seconds she wished all that was happening was a dream, she wished Hajiya Turai was not a vicious woman, she kept wishing a lot of things inwardly and Inna's voice brought an end to it.

" It's all the same, now go sit beside your Maa and listen to what they have to say"

"Okay Inna" Safaa mumbled dragging her legs to where her Mama was seated, she sat on the lush carpet beneath the sofa and softly exchanged pleasantries with her Uncle and Mommy.

Hajiya Turai acted like she had not seen her and when Safaa greeted her, she hissed and turned her face the other way.

" Safara'u, Ahmad informed me of what you asked from him, I personally advised him to give you what you want but he's stubborn and heartless, it's like he is not my son at all..." Kawu Sunusi explained not giving a hoot about his choice of words.

" Sunusi if you know you called this meeting to bring up a fight again then please I want to be excused, what nonsense! " Baa, Their grandfather barked.

" Alhaji I just felt like telling Safaa that she's a nobody to treat my son like that, she's just so lucky he is so stubborn, left to me the marriage would have been dissolved by now " He answered his father back.

Abubakar was silently seething within, he promised his wife that he would not fight with his elder brother this time around but seeing Sunusi disrespecting their father angered him.

" And he is a somebody right?" Baa spat.

" I don't mean to disrespect you Baa, but I just..."

"Shut up Sunusi, Say another word and I swear you would regret it, now Ahmadu what do you have to say about this?"

" Baa I don't know why Safaa chose to give up on our love all of a sudden butΒ  I can't let her go" Ahmad explained.

" Safaa you heard what your husband said right? Why don't you want to go back to your home?" Baa asked his gaze fixed on Safaa.

"I..." Safaa began but Hajiya Turai's voiced interrupted her.

" She won't go back to my son's house Baa and that's final"

" And who are you to decide that?" Baa snapped.

" What is wrong with you Hajiya Turai, why can't you just keep shut and allow him to set everything right? Safaa is hurting, she's carrying your grandchild for crying out loud" Mommy also joined the heated convo.

" So you have grown wings right? Come and shut me up toh, The girl who had the audacity to look at my face and say all sort of profanities to me does not deserve to be my daughter inlaw..." Hajiya Turai ranted.

" Mama, Safaa has never shouted on you" Ahmad cut his Mama off.

" You don't talk while am talking Ahmadu, Your wife is a mannerless girl and I would say that anywhere"

Fadimatu could not hold back her anger so she talked back at Hajiya Turai.

" You can't just call our daughter that right infront of us Hajiya, Safaa has always been so obedient to you, she literally worshipped the ground you walk on just because she wanted your love and appreciation, what kind of a woman are you?..." Abubakar cut his wife off with just a look and she abided.

Hajiya Turai glared at the woman who gave birth to the pest disturbing her peace of mind before continuing.

" Baa as Ahmad's mother, I'd like to give you an advice on this, tell Ahmad to divorce the girl so we could all have peace of mind, their relationshipΒ  is creating a huge rift in this family, And you Ahmadu what has she got that Zarah doesn't have eh? Let her go and live a happy life with your other wife"

" How could you say that Mama? Safaa is one of a kind, You can never get a daughter inlaw like her, She's the only one I love, I can't let her go " Ahmad continued arguing with his mother.

" Did you ask her what she came to do at your father's house some days ago? I bet you have no idea how she left me speechless that day"

" Gosh Mama"

" Ask her, ke Tell him how you insulted me in my own room " Hajiya Turai pointed a finger at Safaa.

The people in the living room were silent as they watched the duo exchanged words.

" Safaa, what is Mama saying please?" Ahmad ignored his Mother and asked his wife.

The words that had been said since Safaa set foot into the living room kept hunting her mind, making her insane and fed up, hearing Ahmad ask her that question, a question that assured her that even if she agreed to go back to him his Mama would forever dictate their lives. Safaa let out a loud shrill unknowingly, startling all of them.

" Ya Allah, I can't take it anymore" She cried clutching her chest as if that'd ease her pain.

After they were able to make Safaa stop her heart wrenching sobs, the meeting continued but so did her silent tears.

" Safara'u wipe away your tears, it's enough now" Baa consoled her once again.

" Can this meeting be over please, I have a place to be in thirty minutes" Kawu Sunusi complained checking his wrist watch.

" Hmm, You're not the son we gave birth to" Inna mused shaking her head unbelievably.

" Safaa do you want to go back to your husband's house?" Baa ignored Kawu Sunusi's complaint and asked his broken grandchild.

Safaa's puffy eyes travelled to her husband's and she saw his pain but the eyes she met right next to his was that of an angry woman that would forever hate her.

" I don't want to go back" She said closing burying her face inside her hijab.

"Ahmadu?" Baa asked Ahmad's opinion.

" I can't Baa, I love my wife with every breath I take, I can't even tell you how much I love her, how do you expect me to divorce her? Just because of my Mama? I don't care if Mama won't accept her for the rest of our lives but am not letting her go" Ahmad said stubbornly.

" But Yaya Ahmad I can't live with you knowing she hates me, I can't live like that again, I can't take in all the pain, not anymore" Safaa croaked.

" Ahmadu you heard what she said, I can't force my daughter to go back to your house" Abubakar spoke for the first time since the meeting begun.

" Baba please let me take my wife with me" Ahmad pleaded.

"It's up to your wife to decide that, Safaa do you want to go with him?" Baa asked.

Safaa locked her eyes with Mommy's caring ones, then with Hajiya Turai's devious ones and shook her head at her grandpa.

"I don't want to"

" Well Ahmadu you heard what she said and I really can't force her too" Baa said sadly.

" I won't let her go " Ahmad shouted making all of them flinch.

He strode out of the living room and drove out of his inlaws house in full speed.

" Well can I go now?" Kawu Sunusi asked casually like nothing serious was going on.

" May Allah guide you Sunusi, you need His guidance" Baa rose and left the living room with Inna following him in a tow.

Abubakar looked at his daughter who was now in her mother's arms and vowed to ease her pains even if it meant cutting off ties with his elder brother. He left the living room too, unable to keep looking at the disheartening sight of his family.

" Amin to your prayer Baa, we all need guidance afterall, Safaa I had no idea you're this wise, Thank you " Hajiya Turai cheered exiting the room with her husband too.

Mommy hissed wishing she was not part of the family like that of Kawu Sunusi's before changing her sofa, she sat beside Fadimatu and took Safaa's cold hands.

" Safaa why did you do that? Why won't you go back to him" Mommy asked her calmly.

" Because if I go back, you might find me dead one day Mommy, I love him but I am so scared now, Am afraid of what Hajiya Turai is capable of doing" Safaa sniffled.

" Shush don't say that" Mommy wiped the tear drops on Safaa's cheeks.

" You don't hate me for doing that do you?" Safaa asked.

" I don't know what you're feeling Safaa but I know you're too young for all this, promise me you'd keep praying, You will find peace In shaa Allah "

"I promise Mommy, Will you talk to him for me? Make him understand" Safaa whispered.

"I'll try" Mommy assured her engulfing her into a warm embrace.

" Thank you " Safaa whimpered hugging Mommy tight.
