"Aleeeeeex!"

I kept walking even though I'd heard my name being called out loud and clear.

My current state?

Eyes: wide eyed and confused.

Hair: Terrible mess.

Hands: Sweaty and red from slapping the jackass on the cheek.

Sanity: Long lost.

As soon as I'd gathered my devices and realized that the monster that I'd sworn to hate for the rest of my existence was kissing me, and not in a chaste way too, I'd pulled away and landed a hard slap on his cheek.

The kiss was as I said, not chaste.

It had started of slow, both of us still shocked, then he'd actually had the audacity to place his hands on my face and holding it in place as if it was fine China before he started to move his lips against mine. All that time, I was still having an out of body experience wherein I didn't know what to do or hadn't quite fully graded what was happening.

Then after the slap, came the shocked expressions on everyone's faces and the gasp. I couldn't take it anymore. I ran out of there.

And here he was actually hunting me down.

"Aleeeex!" He called out again.

I chanced a look back and saw he was hot on my trail, about ten steps back.

"Alex! I can... I can explain," he said.

Explain? Seriously? What explanation would deem what he did back there worthy of my attention?

"Where are you going anyway?"

I continued to ignore him, heading for the exit.

"It'll be hard getting a ride home, Alex."

Well, he was persistent.

"I'm being serious here, Alex. Besides we got thirty minutes left. I suggest we go grab something to eat then head back before Declan has our heads on a platter."

I stopped short. Thirty minutes? Noticing my hesitation my stomach growled loudly, reminding me of its' hunger.

"Come on, Alex. Please."

For the sake of my hunger, I turned around. "Fine," I nodded. "After an explanation and an apology."

He nodded. "No one can know we came here together, and you were basically about to spill everything."

"Why can't anyone know?"

"Rumors are gonna start. And for the sake of you and your career I didn't want any of them to start. Besides, Declan doesn't want anyone to know about you until we're well into the shoot."

I nodded. "And you couldn't find another way to keep me quiet?" I arched a brow.

"I'm sorry I panicked, okay? Besides, if I'd placed my hand on your mouth, I'm pretty sure you would have bitten it off."

Yeah, that would've definitely happened. "Okay, I see your point."

"And there was an upside to it," he smirked.

"Which is?" What upside would there have been from kissing his arrogant ass?

"We got early practice for the scene. We're shooting it in three weeks"

I rolled an eye. "Where's my apology?"

"I'm sorry," he said looking at the ground. "Okay?"

I nodded. "You owe me a big burger, by the way!"

Ashleigh's hotline rang, resounding in her ears.

She'd just placed the phone back on it's placement minutes ago after calming down Mrs Gerald who'd just lost her husband a month ago.

She looked up at the huge analog clock mounted on the wall.

According to procedure she was to write down the exact time of the calls.

11:22pm

"Must be a drunk," she said to herself. "You can do this, Ash! One more then you can go back home."

Brrring! Brrrring!

Well, whoever it was was persistent.

Ashleigh took a deep breath before she picked up the phone and pressed the 'Record' button on her computer.

"Depression Hotline, how can I help you?" She repeated the line she'd been saying since 8pm.
Silence met her from the other end.

"Hello?" She said again.

No answer.

"Hello, is anyone there? Can I help you?"

The sound of heavy breathing met her from the other end.

"Hello?" She tried again, already determined that that would be the last time she did that. For all she knew it was just a prank caller.

"Life is better without relationships, isn't it?" A deep voice said from the other end.

She didn't recognize it. How could she anyway? There were programs installed that altered a person's voice and kept both the caller and the person answering's identities confidential.

"I'm sorry. I don't understand." Ashleigh yawned from the lack of sleep.

"I said, what's the reason people have relationships when in the end someone lies and cheats?"

So this was a cheating type of depression where the caller went on and on about cheating, lies and never loving again, then days later they either moved on, were on a rebound or was back with the ex.

"Humans have the mechanism built within our DNA to crave relationships. I guess that's why everyone takes their chances and hope for the best," Ashleigh tried to sound hopeful and believing to whatever she was saying.

A chuckle echoed from the other end. A sad, defeated one. "You too, huh?"

"What about me?" She asked.

"You recently got cheated on, right?"

Ashleigh glanced around, thinking someone in her office was pulling a fast one on her.

"You called to talk about you, sir. Not about me," she tried her best to get back to safer grounds.

"That's a yes then. How long were you together?" The voice on the other end sounded curious.

"How long were you and yours together?" She asked him, hoping he'd take the bait.

"How about this?" He avoided the question. "I answer your questions if you answer mine."

Ashleigh found herself shaking her head. "No, that's not how it works. I'm the one doing the questioning here and the helping."

"You'd be helping me a lot by doing that."

"No sir. It's not-"

"Fine then. I guess I'll just get depressed and then just jump off a cliff or something because I didn't get some help."

"Okay fine," Ashleigh found herself saying.

"Great. So how long?"

"Three."

"Three what? Months? Weeks?"

"Years," Ashleigh replied.

"Years?!" The voice on the other end exclaimed. "Whoa! That's... That's quite some time."

"Your turn. How long?" Ashleigh asked.

"Two months," he replied.

"Who was she cheating on you with?"

"My best friend. You?"

"Same."

The guy chuckled. "This is fate, I think they call it."

"Fate? You still believe in that after everything that's happened?"

He chuckled again. "God no! I never believed in that bullshit, ever! It's just funny how the person I get when I call a depression hotline is on the same boat with me."

Ashleigh smiled. "Yeah, funny!"

"So, what's your name, girl? I'm assuming of course that you're a girl or it will be super awkward."

Ashleigh burst out laughing. "Yes, I am. My name is... Mary." She supplied her middle name easily, reassured that she hasn't lied to the mysterious person.

"Mary," he said smoothly. "Nice name."

"And yours?" Ashleigh asked.

"Let's call me... Mr X, for now," he answered.

Ashleigh tried to hide her disappointment that he didn't give her a name. But then again, she wasn't one to talk. After all, she'd given him her middle name, not her first name.

"I gotta run, Mary. But I think I might still need help. Can I call you tomorrow?"

Ashleigh found herself agreeing before hanging up, a smile permanently glued onto her face.
