"What about this?" I asked Cassie, gesturing to myself. I had on Brett's jersey and a pair of white shorts, even though the jersey hung to my mid-thighs and completely covered them.

Cassie sat on my bed with her legs crossed, eyes glued to the cellphone in her hand that she'd been obsessing over for the past hour.

"Cass," I repeated, emphasizing her name to no luck -- she didn't even look up. Who was she texting that had her grinning ear to ear?

With a huff, I walked to my bed and plucked the phone out of her hand.

"Hey!" She yelled, reaching outward to grab her phone. I held it further, out of reach. "I was using that." Her eyes narrowed as she watched me, annoyance heavy in her voice.

"Who are you texting?" I asked, waving the phone in the air in front of her face.

She paused, her eyes shifting to the floor before they met mine. "No one." Lie.

"Cassie," I warned. When she didn't respond, I clicked her phone on and watched the screen. This mystery-texter was bound to send another message any second.

"Becca! Please. Don't --"

Her phone lit up and my eyes widened in surprise as I saw the name flash onto the screen.

Parker.

She was texting Parker?

I glanced between the phone to Cassie and back again. Her cheeks were red as she chewed on her nail nervously, shifting awkwardly on the bed. I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out.

"I was going to tell you tonight ..." Her voice trailed off as I stared at her phone, Parker's name still flashing on the screen as he sent another text. "Are you upset?" She asked carefully.

"Upset?" I laughed, managing to find my voice as I tossed the phone onto the bed in front of her crossed legs. "Why would I be upset, Cass?" I joined her on the bed as she chewed on her lip thoughtfully.

"You two are friends," she replied after a moment, shrugging.

"I'm not upset. Confused -- maybe a little surprised. But not upset." I told her honestly. She let out a long breath then smiled, twirling a strand of her brown hair around her finger.

Cassie was always blabbering on about something. Seeing her sit there utterly speechless, flustered and embarrassed was, well, shocking.

"Tell me how this happened," I demanded, poking her arm. She giggled gleefully and tied her hair back into a ponytail before answering.

"He came into the pizza parlour last week ..." She replied, her voice trailing off as she stared at her hands, a small smile on her lips.

"And?" I pried, fulfilling my best friend duties and needing all the details.

Her eyes shone as they lifted up to mine. "The next day, he was there again. And the day after that. And the day after that," she whispered to her own disbelief.

"He must really love pizza," I joked. Cassie smacked my leg and I laughed, tossing a pillow at her.

"He's so sweet, Becca," she gushed, her face dreamy as she spoke about Parker. "He started dropping by every time I was on break to spend the hour with me."

I grabbed my best friends hand in mine as she went on about Parker. Cassie was beautiful, full of life and love and she deserved someone who could appreciate her. Parker, I decided, could do just that.

"Parker is a great guy, Cass." I thought back to all the times he had helped me -- driving me home from his sister's party, encouraging mine and Brett's relationship. He had always been there for me since the first second I met him and had never been anything short of kind.

"Aside from the fact that he's related to Satan," Cassie said, rolling her eyes as she spoke about Jenny. I choked back a laugh as she continued. "Plus, all your's and Brett's lovey-dovey crap has made me feel lonely as hell."

I pushed her backwards onto the bed as I stood up and walked to my closet, rummaging for a pair of sneakers to wear to Brett's football game.

"Can I invite him tonight?" Cassie called from the bed as I walked out of my closet, sneakers in hand. "Parker," she clarified as I bent down to put the shoes on. "Is it weird if he comes?"

She didn't have to say it, but I knew she was referring to Brett and the tension between the two of them. The last time they were together, Parker ended up with a bloody nose and Brett and I didn't speak for weeks. I laced up my shoe and tried to hide the ache in my heart as I thought back to those days. That was a long time ago. Brett and I had come so far. Whatever problems they had were long over.

I stood straight and ran my hands through my hair. "It's not weird," I reassured her, pushing my hair behind my shoulders. "Parker was never a threat to our relationship. He and Brett just ... got off on the wrong foot, that's all. You should invite him."

Cassie beamed, smiling happily at my words. Her phone was in her hand immediately, thumbs flying across the keyboard as she extended the invitation to Parker.

"This outfit. Yes or no?" I asked again, getting our conversation back on track.

"Definitely a yes." My head snapped to the doorway when I heard his deep voice. Brett was leaning against the frame, smiling as his eyes slowly traveled up my body.

"Brett!" I exclaimed, surprised to see him. "What are you -- How did you get inside?" I raised my eyebrows at him, crossing my arms over my chest as he chuckled. The front door was locked and, last time I checked, he didn't have a key.

"The door was open," he said easily, his eyes subtly shifting to Cassie sitting on my bed. My gaze flicked to her and she smiled sheepishly.

"I forgot," she mumbled, looking at me apologetically before returning her attention back to her phone. I rolled my eyes at her and turned back to Brett.

"What are you doing here?" I asked happily. "I thought we were meeting at the game."

Brett shrugged as he pushed off the wall and walked towards me. "I wanted to see you before the game," his voice turned low as he placed his hands on my hips, his face hovering in front of mine.

"And that's my cue!" Cassie declared, rising from the bed and dramatically running out of my bedroom. She shut the door behind her with a bang, momentarily drowning out the sound of Brett's laughter.

"She's getting a bit annoyed of us, huh?" He asked, tucking my hair behind my ear.

I chewed on my lip, contemplating whether or not it was the right time to tell him about Parker. He deserved to know. Parker showing up at the game tonight unexpected would only make things worse.

"What is it?" Brett asked, tapping my forehead with his finger. I met his eyes and he was smiling at me gently. The stubble on his chin was longer than I had ever seen it. I trailed my fingers along his jawline as I collected my thoughts.

"Cassie's ... talking to someone," I said cautiously, struggling to find the right way to phrase her and Parker's blooming relationship. Brett's eyebrows pulled together as he watched me, an amused expression on his face.

"You say that like it's a bad thing." He leaned in and kissed my nose. "Don't think they're good enough for your best friend?"

I rolled my eyes and walked over to my bed. Brett followed, taking a seat beside me as I tugged my knees up to my chest and wrapped my arms around myself.

"No. I know he's a good guy, Brett." He raised his eyebrows as I spoke, picking up a pillow and placing it on his lap.

"Then what's the problem?"

I sighed. Just say it. "It's Parker," I blurted out, wincing as soon as his name came out of my mouth.

Brett's eyes widened and he sat frozen for a minute, staring at me. "Parker?" He repeated, his voice strained. I nodded my head and grabbed his hand in mine, shifting my body to face him.

"He goes to the pizza parlour she works at," I told him, shrugging to play it off.

I watched Brett's face, studying every line. His lips were pursed, eyebrows drawn together in the middle. He looked as if he were trying to come up with the solution to a hard calculus question. I poked him in the ribs and his eyes met mine. He smiled softly.

"You were scared of how I would react to this?" He asked, gently nudging my chin with his free hand.

"I know you don't exactly like him." I played with Brett's fingers mindlessly as I spoke.

"Hey," he grabbed my chin in his hand and tilted my head up towards his until our eyes locked. "The only reason I disliked the guy was because I thought he was into you."

I rolled my eyes. "I told you a thousand times Parker and I were just friends."

"We were just friends at one point too, Becca. That didn't exactly reassure me."

"The point is," I emphasized, staring at him squarely. "Cassie likes him, Brett. That's what's important to me. I just didn't want you to be surprised when you see him tonight."

Brett's eyebrows shot up. "He's coming to the game tonight?" He whined, his face scrunching up in disgust.

"Be nice," I warned.

Brett groaned as he flopped back onto my bed, laying an arm over his head. "Why?" He mumbled. I stifled a laugh as I shook my head.

"You're such a baby," I teased, poking him in the stomach and feeling the hard muscles beneath his shirt. Brett peeked up at me from under his arm, a wicked grin appearing on his face. I made to jump off the bed but I was too late. I shrieked as he pulled me down on top of him, holding me tightly to his chest as I squirmed.

A loud knock sounded on the door as we both peered behind us. "I'm still here!" Cassie yelled, pounding on the door again.

"How could we forget?" I mumbled. Brett's eyes widened as he chuckled, covering my mouth with his hand.

"Sorry!" He called out, definitely feeling anything but. "I'll behave," he said to me, winking before he leaned in and kissed me, gently tugging down on my bottom lip with his teeth.

Brett's hands traveled down my back, resting below my waist as he slipped his tongue into my mouth. I could feel myself falling, losing my senses to his intoxication.

My skin burned as his hands slid down my bare thighs and then up my back, underneath the jersey. He kissed me slowly, lazily, as if we had all the time in the world. There was no rush as his hands moved in slow, teasing circles against my skin.

"We should probably go," he murmured into my lips, running his finger under the waistband of my shorts.

"We probably should," I agreed, raking my hands through his hair as I kissed him, neither of us making any attempt to move.

I wanted the world to melt away -- for every prior commitment to just disappear. No football, no school, no anything aside from Brett and I. And as he kissed me, it felt like it did. We were wrapped up in our little bubble once again.

My head whipped up as another loud pounding sounded from my bedroom door. "Jesus Christ! Let's go!" Cassie yelled, hitting the door again as mine and Brett's bubble began to fade away.

I glanced at Brett and he was staring at the door like he wanted to burn it down.

"She's cranky," I told him, my voice coming out breathless. "Apparently our lovey-dovey crap is annoying." Brett smiled, his eyes dark and hazy as I repeated Cassie's words from earlier.

I began to sit up and he tightened his arms around my back, pressing me tightly to his chest. "Why can't I just have you all to myself?" He whined and I couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous he was being.

I pushed myself off the bed and patted his stomach. "Get up," I ordered while running my fingers through my hair. Brett propped himself onto his elbows as he watched me, his eyes following my hands.

"I hate football," he grumbled, finally pushing himself off the bed and standing beside me.

Cassie screamed something unintelligible from the hallway and Brett rolled his eyes. "She's excited to see Parker," I shrugged, defending her impatience.

"I wouldn't know how that feels," Brett replied, smiling smugly to himself.

Despite myself, I laughed. He was acting like an immature child who wasn't used to not getting what he wanted.

"Play nice," I warned, raising my eyebrows at him.

Brett pouted and reached for me, grabbing my waist and pulling me against his chest. "But playing dirty is so much more fun," he teased, wiggling his eyebrows.

I rolled my eyes and pushed myself off of him but he grabbed my hand, tugging me back. I didn't put up a fight, contently nestling into his open arms.

"I was jealous of Parker, Becca. Of your friendship with him." Brett's hand smoothed my hair as he spoke quietly.

I lifted my head off his chest and stared at him, holding his cheek in my hand. "There was never anything to be jealous of," I assured him.

"I know that now," he chuckled. "I'm a jealous person, Becs. I didn't like seeing you with him. I hated how he made you laugh. You trusted him -- confided in him. I ... " He trailed off, shaking his head side to side. "I didn't like it."

"When we were falling apart, Brett, Parker pulled us back together. He never once tried to ruin our relationship. In a weird way, he tried to fix it." Brett raised his eyebrows in surprise. "That doesn't matter now. I love you," I told him for the hundredth time, not missing the way his eyes still lit up at those words.

"I love you too, babe." I smiled as he kissed my forehead, sighing against his chest. "I have a surprise for you later." I pulled my head back and stared at him with wide eyes.

"What is it?" I asked, my mind wandering with all the possibilities.

"You'll find out tonight." Wink.

"Hint?"

Brett chuckled. "Not a chance. And don't try the lip bite, I'm nearly immune to that."

I blinked up at him as I bit my lip slowly, running my hands down his arms. Brett's eyes locked on my mouth and his own dropped open as he cursed under his breath.

What was he saying about being immune?

Brett cleared his throat and narrowed his eyes at me. "You're evil."

I laughed loudly as I walked out of my bedroom and down the hallway, Brett's footsteps trailing behind me. Cassie was standing with her back against the wall, watching us with her arms crossed and eyes narrowed.

"I see you decided to save your energy for the game," she said, staring at Brett. "Good call."

I choked on a laugh as Brett's eyes widened at Cassie's comment. He glanced at me with his eyebrows raised and I shrugged. Cassie was never one to filter her thoughts.

Laughing, Cassie tucked her phone into her pocket. "You're alright if Parker comes?" She asked Brett nervously, chewing on her lip.

Brett smiled gently and placed his hand on her shoulder. "Absolutely." Cassie beamed up at him and I smiled at his kindness. He shifted his attention to me as he said, "I'll meet you two downstairs."

Brett leaned in and kissed my cheek. Quietly, so Cassie couldn't hear, he whispered in my ear. "Tonight, you're mine."

I felt myself redden as he walked out the door, closing it behind him without a glance back. Cassie, oblivious to what just happened, turned to me and smiled happily.

"Does he really mean that he's fine with Parker coming or is he saying that for my benefit?"

I shook my head quickly before I spoke, brushing off the slight daze. "He means it," I reassured her.

Tonight was just another football game. Parker being there wouldn't make it different than any other. I took a deep breath and linked my arm through Cassie's as we walked down the hallway towards the elevator.

I just hoped Brett and Parker could truly put their differences aside for tonight so the four of us could just have fun without punches being thrown.

"You really think they'll be able to get along?" I asked her as we waited for the elevator. The bell chimed and we walked inside.

Cassie turned to me, smiling nervously. "I hope so," was all she said as the doors closed behind us.
