A/N: Ya'll like the new Rivals Book Cover?;)

"Okay, it's getting pretty late. We should head out now," Colby says, standing up and patting Sam's back.

I yawn and stretch my arms, "Yeah, we'll see you tomorrow, bud."

"Thanks for being here with me guys, I'm totally exhausted now," Sam smiles. Ellie goes over to give him a hug.

"We'll always be here for you, Sammy," Ellie smiles.

We say one more goodbye as we all exit the room. Doctor Yang and Doctor Burke pass us too and wave us goodbye before rushing off to save another patient.

"I'm exhausted," Colby yawns, loudly. "I think I might pass out."

"Good thing there's a lot of doctors around in case you do," Ellie jokes.

"Yeah, but I don't want one specific doctor to even touch me, if you catch my drift," Colby grumbles.

"Kai..." Ellie and I mumble.

"Well, duh," Colby nods.

It's about one-thirty in the morning as we're walking out the doors of the hospital, and all of a sudden, two frantic parents burst through the door.

"Where's my son!" A woman hollers, holding a man's hand.

"Mrs. Golbach!" Colby exclaims, but yawns at the end.

Sam's parents are here.

"Mr. Golbach!" Ellie says, walking over to them.

"I'm glad to see you guys here, where's Sammy?" Mrs. Golbach asks, scanning the lobby of the hospital.

"He's almost about to sleep," I reply, "But would you like us to take you both to him anyway?"

"Please, we jumped on the next flight here in the matter of seconds after getting Colby's phone call," Mr. Golbach smiles.

"I'll take you both, these two are exhausted," Ellie offers.

"El, you sure? You've been caring for Sam for the whole past two days," Colby yawns again.

"Babe, you're literally about to collapse. Go, I'm fine. Ashlyn will make sure you don't pass out in the parking lot," Ellie sternly says.

Colby mumbles a 'fine', and he and I wave goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Golbach. Ellie escorts them down the hall to Sam.

The poor parents.

They're real supporters.

It must be terrifying to not know what happened to their child.

Gives me chills.

"Ash, do you want me to d-rive," Colby rubs his hands over his eyes and yawns again, "-Or me..."

"Shut up, just get in the passenger seat, sleepy pants," I command, opening his door for him.

"You don't have to fuckin' baby me," He retorts.

"Honey, you're almost dead. Close your eyes and let hell take you in," I scoff.

"Biiitch, sleeping is heaven," Colby argues.

"Then sleep, I like it better when you're not talking," I chuckle, getting into the front seat and turning the key.

"Rude," He sleepily whispers.

I shrug and drive to the hotel.

/////

Colby had fallen asleep in the car.

The drive was about five minutes.

Only five minutes had passed and this boy was already asleep.

Ellie was right when she said he would collapse.

"C'mon, Colberity. Wake up," I say, opening Colby's door and shaking his arm.

He doesn't move but continues to snore.

I groan and poke his cheek, "Hellooo...Colbert?"

I'm giving him one more chance to wake up and if he doesn't I'm going to literally scream.

Poke.

Poke.

3...2...1...

"COLBY BROOOCK!"

His body jolts up and he hits his head on the ceiling of the car.

"OW!" He groans, "What, Ash!"

"Good, you're up," I smile, sweetly.

"You're the devil," Colby mumbles, rubbing his forehead.

"I'd like to picture myself as an angel in disguise," I wink.

"Fuck you, bro."

I grin, "Hey, you can now sleep on the couch at least."

"Whatever," He gets out of the car and we walk into the hotel. "Wait... I WANT THE BED!"

"Ladies always get the bed, bitch," I retort.

"That is- SEXIST!"

"You should be a gentleman, idiot," I state.

He rolls his eyes, "I have a girlfriend, we were going to sleep on that bed."

"Ellie's not here to sleep on that bed with you, hun," I chuckle, pressing the elevator button and getting in. "Plus, when I sleep on it, she can just join me in the bed cuz we're girls."

"Oh, but I can't sleep in the bed with you?" He bickers, waving his hands in the air.

"Well, yeah. That'd just be weird," I reply; is he stupid. We get out the elevator and walk down the hall to our room.

He unlocks our door and pushes it open, "Whatever, we're friends. Who cares."

"Uh, me," I say in a matter of a fact type manner.

"Well if you don't want to sleep in the bed with me, then fine," He shrugs, jumping onto the bed.

I gasp, "Hey! When Ellie gets back, we're going to sleep on the bed. We're girls we can do that."

"Again, that is- SEXIST."

"She's my best friend, it's fine. God, get the fuck off," I demand, swatting his legs off the foot of the bed.

"She's my girlfriend, we can sleep in a bed together," He argues.

"But I don't wanna sleep on the bed doe," I groan, giving up and sitting by his feet.

"Just sleep in the bed with me now, and then when she gets here, I'll leave to sleep on the couch," He offers.

He's letting me have the bed.

Fuck yeah.

But, awe.

He's being nice.

"Ugh, no," I grumble, tossing my hands to my face, "I'll take the couch when she gets here."

"Ash, no. What the fuck, I thought my offer was what you wanted. I'm literally giving you the bed," He says, confused. "Now you're refusing it?"

I oblige with a nod, "Basically."

He throws his head back down onto the fluffy pillow, "I swear to god I don't get girls."

I crawl more next to him and say, "Well, I was now feeling bad because you were being nice!"

"Ash, I want to punch you," He jokes, chucking the pillow behind his head at me.

It smacks me in the face, "Ouch," I giggle.

He laughs, getting under the blankets for protection.

I roll my eyes and grab the pillow next to me and slam his head with it.

"OW, that actually HURT!" He exasperates.

"Suck it up beanie boy," I laugh.

"Honestly, kill yo self."

"I won't kill ma self, ya big butt," I retort, jumping closely by his face.

He peeks his head out from underneath, "Woah, that was way too close to comfort."

I giggle.

"So, now you have to accept my offer. Don't be a drama queen."

"I am not a drama queen!" I exasperate, now self-conscious if I make a big deal out of everything. "But fine, I'm tired anyways."

"Kay good, I'm going to quickly brush my teeth," He replies, getting up and walking into the bathroom. I use the time to quickly change into my pajamas. I grab my toothbrush and knock on the bathroom door.

Colby muffles a 'come in' and I open the door.

He was shirtless, looking at me with those ocean eyes, while brushing his teeth.

Could a human being make brushing their teeth look this sexy? What the hell.

I blush, playfully shoving him to the side with my hip. We brush our teeth and as we are both staring in the mirror, I honestly feel like we're a married couple.

But no, we're just friends.

I finish brushing and quickly hurry to submerge myself beneath the soft, white covers on the mattress.

Colby turns off the lights and I close my eyes. I feel the bed dip to his side and his warmth cascading slowly to my skin.

After what felt like an eternity, I open my eyes.

Just to get greeted by his oceans staring right back.

Caught me off guard, but I like how it did that.

If that makes any sense...

"Can't sleep?" I whisper.

"Nope, you?" He asks.

"Nah..." I murmur.

"Can you usually sleep at this time?" He asks.

"Eh, feels like my second wind is kicking in," I reply, "But what's on your mind?"

"A lot," He sighs.

"What type? Parking?" I joke, smirking.

"You're so funny," He sarcastically laughs.

"I know," I chuckle. "But okay, seriously, what's a lot? Give me a list."

He sighs again, "Sam... Sam's injuries, his parents, Kai, relationships, friendships, health, and... well... you."

I raise an eyebrow, "Me?"

He thinks about me...

"Yeah, you," He grins.

"What about me? Why am I on the infamous Cole Brock's mind?"

"You turned to my rival to my friend. I'm still getting used to it, Ash," He chuckles.

I half smile; half relieved, half disappointed. I felt like I was waiting for something more, but none more was said from his mouth.

"Oh, me too."

"Do you think about me?" He asks, curiously.

I blush, "Uhm, y-yeah, I guess so," I stammer. "You're almost always on my mind, if I'm being completely honest," I say truthfully.

"If I'm being completely honest, same here," He smiles.

I smile too.

Our noses are practically touching and his face is dark. The only light is from the moon that is shining through the window.

We were so close, his features, his hot breath, were small details I could make out on his face.

"Ash," He whispers.

"Yes?" I whisper back.

"I want to kiss you."

I freeze.

We're friends.

Nothing more.

"No, you don't."

Suddenly someone knocks on the door.

My eyes go wide and so does Colby, he jolts up from his sleeping position and scrambles to get a blanket and jump on the couch.

"Who is it?" I call out, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

"Ellie, who else?" The voice calls.

I get up, "Comin', El." I open the door and she walks in, and crashes on the bed.

"Where's Colby?" She asks.

I see Colby "asleep" on the couch and lie, "Oh, he's passed out on the couch. I've been up to wait for you."

"Aw, thanks girl," Ellie smiles. She kicks off her shoes and cuddles under the covers. I climb in the other side of her and tug the blankets up to my chin.

I whisper, "So, what'd Sam's parents do, say, whatever."

"Well, they asked me a lot of questions. Primarily about how Sam got hurt and all that. I told them about Kai. Took me a while though to answer all of whatever they had to ask and their follow up questions," Ellie sighs. "They seemed extremely pissed at Kai, but hell, what parent wouldn't?"

"Right."

"Let's talk more in the morning, goodnight." She rolls over and falls asleep.

I turn away and shut my eyes.

Maybe Colby is actually asleep, maybe he isn't.

But before Ellie came, he admitted he wanted to kiss me.

What's wrong with him?

He's got a girlfriend, how many goddamn times will I have to say it, remind it, scream it?

Don't answer that.

Just know one thing.

Friends or not,

we're still rivals.

Because rivals ruin each other's lives.

And he certainly is always doing that to me.

My body.

My brain.

My heart.

They all agree he can't be liked.

But they still choose to like him.

I hate liking HIM.
