I never expected to be back in Somerset Kentucky but with my mom's recent passing I was left Forever Fountain.

It is a wedding venue that has been passed down to the women in my family for generations but I am not excited about being here and having to figure all of this out on my own.

I haven't been home in a couple of years and of course, everything has changed but mom never let on that she was struggling or sick and needed help whenever she decided to talk to me.

I would have come to help her even though my brother is around he didn't say a word. Maybe he didn't know either.

I have been living in New York after college and just didn't want to come back to Kentucky. There is absolutely nothing here for me.

I get out of my rental car and walk toward the venue. The first thing I see is the fountain. It takes me back to being a kid when Clay and I used to play in the fountain and mom would scream at us to get out.

I walk up to the doors and take a deep breath before walking in. There is a girl at the counter and she smiles at me. "Hi! Welcome to Forever Fountain! How can I help you?"

"Hi, I'm Chesney Anderson."

"Oh gosh, it's so nice to meet you! I am Whitney and I am so sorry about your mom."

"Thank you and thank you for keeping things going until I could get here."

"It's no problem I have been your mom's right-hand person for a couple of years now and I know how to run things."

"I appreciate you and I'm sure I will need your help because I don't know the first thing about running a wedding venue." I laughed.

"Here are the keys to your mom's office and her house. I haven't been over there but I think Clay has."

I take the keys and thank her and walk down the hall toward the office. Mom and I weren't close but we both could have tried harder.

After dad died she just acted different and she only thought of herself and could care less about me and Clay so as soon as I got the chance I left and didn't look back.

I unlocked the door and I could smell her perfume right away. Gardenias were her favorite.

I walked over to her desk and sit down and she had a picture on her desk of Clay and me when we were young and one of her and dad.

What caught my eye was a stack of bills that were laying there. I guess they need to be paid and I have no idea where anything is.

I walk back up front and ask Whitney for her help.

"The checkbook and ledger are in the top drawer and as far as I know she is making good money here."

"Have you been paid for the week, Whitney?"

"No, I haven't."

"Well, I will take care of that too."

I grabbed my reading glasses and put them on and started going over bills to see when they were due. Thankfully nothing was past due.

The bell dinged over the door and Whitney rushed out front.

Someone was standing in the doorway. I looked up and it was my baby brother Clay. There is just a year between us.

"Hey, Chesney I am glad you made it."

"Clay."

"Mad at me still?"

"Yeah, why didn't you tell me she was sick?"

"I didn't know! She didn't tell me shit and I was with her daily."

"How are you dealing with all of this?" I asked.

"I am dealing and I will be here for you with whatever you need but I don't know anything about the venue stuff."

"I see a lot of things need repairs and I am going to need someone. Do you know anyone?"

"Yeah, there is a town contractor I can give you his number."

"Sounds good. How is the gas station?"

"Business is good. I mean it helps when you are the only gas station in our area." He laughed.

"I have to get all of these bills paid but let me know about the guy. I am going to have to stick close to Whitney and try to learn things."

"Does that means you will live here Chesney?"

"I don't have a choice, Clay. Mom left this to me and I can't let it just end because she isn't here plus people have paid in advance to get married here."

He sighed. "Yeah I know and I appreciate you coming back more than you know sis plus I have missed you."

I smiled at him. "Don't forget to get me the number to the contractor."

"I am on it. I have his card somewhere." He smiled walking out.

Oh, mom what in the hell am I supposed to do?

I wrote out a couple of checks and paid other things online and I walked out to find Whitney to pay her before heading to moms house for the night which won't be weird at all.

I handed Whitney her check and left for the day and headed to moms.

I haven't been here in a long time and it feels weird going back and she is not here.

I am not sure why I haven't cried yet but maybe it just hasn't hit me. We really didn't get to say goodbye with her wanting to be cremated right away.

I got out of the car and stepped up to the house and as I went to unlock the door a truck pulled up that I didn't recognize.

A nice-looking guy got out smiling walking my way. "Hey, I heard you were looking for me."

"Umm do I know you?" I nervously laughed.

"Probably not but I've heard a lot about you." He smiled with his perfect teeth.

"Well since you know my name what is yours?"

"My apologies but I'm Stone Travers."
