Chapter 15

Zach pov

Our search was going nowhere. I would like to say that we have something, anything but that would be a lie. All of our leads, (which wasn't a lot to begin with) turned up cold. And the news about the traitor has put everyone on edge. At this point I can't tell if it was because The Eye has covered their tracks well, or that the traitor is preventing us from uncovering any possible information. Either way, this mission has made me frustrated. It doesn't make any sense. What are we missing now? We now we have a traitor, what else is there? And how could one of our own betray us that easily? Why would someone choose to betray us? That brings up another question, what if they had no choice.

The only thing that we have gotten right in the past couple of days was the unanimous decision to go forward with the evidence we have against the director. It's circumstantial at best, but for now its all we need. He has answers, and we have questions, its as simple as that. The only problem was that with his position as the director of the CIA, we couldn't really just haul him in for questioning. First we need to take him out of the position in order to get to him. Finding out what the director knows is a big step for us. He is the key to ending this mission once and for all.

This morning, Bex suggested that we bring her parents on the case. She argued that they would bring in a new perspective on the case which is what we need. We all agreed because whether we would like to admit it or not, we were getting desperate. I had a feeling the rest of the Baxter family was going to get involved one way or another. Maybe M16 has information we might have missed. However if that were the case then Townsend would have brought it up. I'm just running my mind in circles with all these questions.

I do know one thing for certain, we aren't going to tell the Baxter's about the traitor when they come. There is no need for them to worry about it as well. And hopefully, they can tell if someone is acting peculiar.

Hours passed with no news. We were there waiting for their arrival trying to uncover new leads. This was exactly where we started months ago, the only difference is that now we have Cammie back. I am relieved that we got her back, I am just feeling so helpless on this case. Every time we move a step forward something keeps dragging us back. We are missing the identity of the traitor and its been bugging me ever since. It has put me on edge watching and over-analyzing everything anyone does because its the only thing I can do, besides worry.

When the Baxter's came we greeted them quickly, eager to get into business. I was glad that they were here to help, we really needed it. Solomon quickly caught them up on what was happened so far. He started with the director withholding information from Cammie causing her to underestimate them and end up getting captured along with Luke. We searched for Cammie getting close in some occasions only for her to slip away. In the beginning, we underestimated The Eye. Now we know that they have extensive resources that allow them to find shelter quickly so that they can evade us. Everything we thought we would had gained was all part of a master plan to make us feel like we accomplished something. All my thoughts go back to one thing, this mission is going downhill. We need someone to help us see what has been in front of our eyes the entire time.

"So far we have almost no information on Luke or the director himself." Rachel tells them placing her hands on the table. "We have some contacts with Interpol who got us some information. It's not much, but for now it'll have to do." Grace said placing a thing file on the table. Townsend was the first one to grab it. "This says that the director appointed Luke himself a few years ago."

"How reliable is your source?" Abby asked them peeking over Townsend's shoulder to take a look. "Extremely reliable. This is the same source that gave us the lead on that case in Milan less than a year ago." Abe interjected, securing the reliability of his source.

We always knew there was a connection between the director and Luke. There had to be a reason we couldn't find any information on either of them. We know the director is corrupt, we have evidence on that. However, if he appointed Luke, does that make him corrupt as well? And if Luke is corrupted, why are we on this mission to save him? Per usual, there were too many questions and not enough answers.

"We think you should go against the director Joe." Abe told him. "If you lay out all of your options to ending this mission, this is the one that will save the most time and probably lives. If you wait any longer how sure are you that they won't just kill him?" They are using Luke for a part of their grand scheme. How long is it until they go through with their plan? What is stopping them? How can we use that to our advantage?

"Do we all agree to go through with it?" Solomon asks staring everyone down. I would be intimidated if I wasn't so used to it already. I nodded my head, and from the corner of my eye I could see the others doing the same. I hope this works out.

"I think our next step should be tracking the director. We should know where he goes, who he sees, who he talks to, everything." I speak up and project my thoughts. If we have an extensive knowledge on his whereabouts it cam come in handy if he tries anything suspicious, it can be against him if we play our cards out right.

"Liz can you set up a trace on him as soon as possible." Rachel said ordering her rather than asking. Liz nodded and ran into the other room to get her laptop. "The rest of you can help her while we prepare all the evidence we have. We are going to go public with it."

Reluctantly the rest of us got up and joined Liz in her search. It was pointless to ask all of us to help, Liz could do this in her sleep. They wanted us out of the room so they could talk in private. I can't believe that after working with them for years we are still treated like children who can't be trusted. I thought we earned more than this.

They were speaking in hushed tones making it hard for me to figure out what they were saying. I gave up a few minutes later, Liz was giving us intrusions on where find a trace on him. I had to prioritize, finding the director came first.

"He's in New York." Bex said inching her computer screen closer towards her. "In the city." Macey specified pointing to the map on the screen.

"Can you get the coordinates?" Cammie asked them speaking up for the first time today. Liz nodded typing the keys even faster. "Based on the coordinates, he is at the UN."

"Which diplomats are meeting there today?" I asked. I had a feeling Preston's dad would be attending. Now that I think about it, he's been pretty quiet today too. However, is that enough grounds to make him a traitor?

"There are no official scheduled meetings." Liz read off the screen.

"You found a trace?" Townsend asked leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. "He's at the UN for an unofficial meeting. We're trying to find out who he's planning on seeing." Liz shoved a computer at me before when we were first ordered to find the director. Everyone had a laptop in front of them, except Townsend since he was standing and just came into the room. I was typing slower than the others taking my time to search who was going to be entering or exiting the building. The security system had everyone sign in their name and swipe their ID into the system before entering and exiting. Security camera armed with facial recognition were also used. I was looking at the footage, Cammie the logbook, Macey the swipes and Bex was using the camera surrounding the building.

Then I caught a glimpse of him. It was the side of his face but it was clear as day. "I found him!" I shouted zooming into video. He was walking up to a man exiting the elevator. I just had to wait for him to get out to see him properly. All I needed was another second.

"I got a hit on Luke." Liz yelled distracting me. I looked away from the security footage for a few seconds and by the time I looked back he was already in the elevator with the mysterious man. "They were sighted at a train station in Italy. Local authorities got an anonymous tip and facial recognition picked them up." She explained quickly.

"I can hack into the system and see if they used one of their aliases to buy a ticket and see where they are planning on going. If we are lucky we can get there before the train does." Bex grabbed the case file on the table. She began reading aloud the names of all their aliases to Liz while the rest of us planned ahead.

"We need a mode of transportation that can get us to wherever they are going before they do." Abby said pacing back and forth. "We can use a jet, it would take half of the time the train does." Macey told us standing up. "We can drive to the nearest airport and I can buy us a plane. And I know for a fact there is no problem in finding out which one of us can pilot a plane." It's true, we all knew how to fly most air-crafts.

"She's right, a plane is the only way we can get there fast enough and on our own time. We need to act now. Solomon interrupts. Everybody else slowly walked into the room. "Liz have you found out where they are going yet?" He asked.

"They purchased a few tickets under a well-known alias. They are headed to Barcelona. Their train leaves in an hour." The fact that they used a well-known alias showed that we may be walking into a trap. At the same time, if we give this up, we will lose an important advantage. This is our shot to catch them and end this once and for all. Even if this is a trap, it's a risk we are willing to take.

Liz closed her laptop and tucked it under her arm. We all grabbed our jackets and the essentials before walking out of the safe-house and into the car, the tired geared in the direction of the closest airport. It was a silent car ride except for Preston reading the directions to Townsend who was driving. His driving could barely classify as driving, he was just pushing his foot down on the accelerator and dodging cars at the last minute. This was our only option of getting on a plane in time.

We got to the airport in half an hour which was good time since it was originally two hours away from the house. Macey was able to walk in and rent a plane for us within a few minutes of walking inside. We barely had any luggage besides Liz's portable computer equipment. Everyone was almost inside the plane for the last safety checks when I pulled Cammie aside.

"Are you ok?" I ask her. She didn't look me in the eyes. "Now isn't the time Zach." She responded. I crossed my arms over my chest. "Tell me what has been bothering you. You haven't been yourself for the last couple of days." I tell her. She has remained quiet and was barely sleeping.

"I could say the same for you. Do you think I don't notice you pretending to be asleep every night for my benefit?"

"When did this conversation chance so that we start taking aim at each other?" She sighed and lifted her head. "I'm sorry Zach, I know you are just trying to help." I tilted her chin up so our eyes met. "Then let me inside that pretty little mind of yours."

"I'm just a little anxious about this case. I feel like we are constantly taking a step in the wrong direction. I'm worried that in ending this. Someone is going to end up hurt and I'm worried its going to be you." I wrapped my arms around her smaller frame and held her close to me.

"I feel the same way Cammie. This mission has gotten me so frustrated, my mind is all over the place. I lost you once this mission, I won't let it happen again." I won't let anyone harm her again. I'm going to keep her safe and together we will end this mission and everything will go back to normal or whatever normal is for a spy.

"Zach?" Cammie called out. I let go of our embrace and opted for an arm over her shoulder. "Yeah Cammie?"

"We'll keep each other safe." She told me looking directly into my eyes with a small smile. "Always." I leaned in to kiss her when our moment was interrupted per usual. Bex's head poked out from the side of the plane. "Hey lovebirds, quit making out and get in. We're losing time!" She shouted. I would be surprised if the entire country didn't hear her. Laughing, Cammie and I boarded the train. Maybe this was a sign that things will start getting better from now.

A few hours later we were exiting the plane. Macey got us to an airport outside of Barcelona an hour before the train was set to arrive. It would take us about 45 minutes to get from the airport to the train station even with Townsend's driving. That would only give us 15 minutes to set a trap for them. No pressure in that.

Before we entered the plane Liz revealed the information we had on the director to the public with Solomon's approval. By the time we got off of the plane, he stepped down from his position temporarily. That was all the access we needed. While we were at the train station Preston was trying to see when we could even begin interrogating him. This was right, something was finally going right.

And then all the screens in the train station became blank. The power shortage lasted for only a second, but when the power came back on, everything with a screen on it was showing one image, Luke's face bloodied and beaten.

A/N: The reason I am late with this update is because I was having abit of writeres block for this story. I thought I had everything planned out but when it comes to writing each individual chapter I beome lost. So hopefully my writers block has ended. I have a pretty good idea wheere I am going to go with these next couple of chapters.I think this story is going to end in 10 chapters. We'll see as it goes on.

Now that I have updated this story, on Friday I am going to start working on chapter 66 for Last to Know. That story is also coming to an end soon. But have no fear I have so many book ideas and no time to write any of them down into chapters.

Don't forget to vote if you liked this chapter, and comment telling me what you think will happen next! The next chapter will be in 2 weeks (hopefully).

I am going to end this authors note because I am rambling.
