"Brittni, honey, Nathan is here to take you to school," my mothers soft voice shakes me from a night of restlessness.

To anyone else, her voice would sound caring and sweet, but I know exactly how her soft voice sounds when she yells and swears.

"I know," I sit up, letting her hand fall mid way to my hair. "Tell him I'll be ready in five minutes."

I don't give her a chance to agree when I grab whatever I see in my closet first and head to my bathroom.

The washed jeans make me itch, but I'm not going back out to my room to change. Though, the grey hoodie seems to give me that sense of comfort I need. I throw my hair into a messy bun, wash my face and walk out to my bedroom to grab my back pack.

Like I expected, my mother is still sitting on my bed with a thoughtful expression on her face.

She watches me grab my bag and put on my shoes, making me feel really nervous under her gaze.

"I'll be back late tonight, I have a business meeting," she finally speaks when I'm about to walk out the door. No doubt it's been more than five minutes, but I'm not planning to have a whole conversation with her.

"A business meeting?" I nod with a raised eyebrow. "You mean, a hook up with your boss?"

"Brittni!" Standing up with a murderous expression is the mother I know all to well.

"What? You don't have to lie to me anymore, mom, I'm old enough to piece the puzzle together," I smile. "Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be heading off to school."

"Brittni Lane! Do not walk out that door!"

"Shut up!" I yell back, pushing the screen door open and letting it hit against the outer brick wall. I'm surprised it didn't break.

Her yells follow me as I make my way to Nathan, even closing the door can't block out her raging words.

My mom is a horrible person. I learned that a couple years ago when I found out why my dad actually left. Before that, my mom told me that my dad couldn't handle a family, but when I went to talk to him two years ago, he explained everything to me.

Supposedly, my parents met in high school, she was the rich little princess everyone wanted to be with. My dad was a middle class, normal guy. He said they were in love, but as they got older he started to think that she was only with him to he rebellious against her multi millionaire dad who expected her to marry a rich man of his choosing.

He let it go when they got married, thought he was being crazy, but one day when I was eight years old he saw her in their bed with her boss who was - of course - rich.

It was all down fall from there. My dad moved to New Jersey found a girl and now has two more kids. I was granted Primary Custody to my mom and she's been with a new guy every week ever since then. Yay.

"How you doing?" Nathan asks, placing a hand on my thigh as we drive.

"Good. Just a little tired," I try smiling to prove my point, but it comes out more as a grimace.

"That sucks, how was driving home with Jackson?" He asks with a teasing smile because he knows just how much I hate my best friends brother.

"I don't even want to think about it."

Nathan laughs, but I don't find it funny.

The events of last night still play in my mind as a reminder who I resemble. I don't want to be anything close to my mom. Plain and simple. But Jackson's last parting words make a piece of my heart shatter. Maybe he's right, I probably don't deserve any compassion or love, but that doesn't mean I can't want it.

We're about five minutes away from school when my phone rings. I pick it up when I see its Nikki and not my mom.

"Hey," I say into the phone.

"Hey!" She shouts. "I was wondering if Nathan can pick me up?"

"I thought your brother gives you rides?" I ask, ignoring the fact that the mention of her brother sends me into a pit of rage.

"Yeah, well we got in a fight and he left without me. I'll explain it if you can pick me up," she explains through the phone.

"Yeah, we'll be there in two minutes," I inform her and hang up the phone. "We have to go pick up Nikki."

Nathan doesn't complain and takes the the turns necessary to get to Nikki's house.

When we pull up in her driveway she jogs to the car, getting in the back seat.

"So," I hint. "What happened that your brother left without you?"

"Well," she sheepishly smiles. "Jackson went to James' house last night-"

Wow, lied to his own sister about his whereabouts. Dick.

"So, I decided to invite Adam over and things got pretty heated. Colten walked in on us and told Jackson now he's mad," she laughs nervously.

I stare at her in shock. "Were you going to sleep with Adam?"

She closes her mouth and averts her eyes away from my face.

"Uh..."

"Nikki!" I screech.

"What! It's not like we haven't before! And besides, it's not my fault Jackson overreacts about everything and left me to get my own ride!" She defends.

She doesn't even realize how lucky she is. Jackson protects her and looks out for her when no one else does and she complaining. If only I had that.

My mother couldn't give two shits about what I do in my spare time. She probably wouldn't notice if I didn't come home at all considering she's always hammered. I would give anything to have a person like Jackson in my life, someone who'll do anything for me.

Sure, I have Nathan and he does his best to be there for me, but it's not the same. I wish my mom would be a mom for once.

"He's just looking out for you," I state a little too harshly, but she doesn't seem to notice the meaning behind my words. She never does.

"Since when do you defend him?" She asks incredulously. Since I realized I have no one. "He's completely overprotective. I can take care of myself."

I'm not saying she can't take care of herself, but if that's what she had to do everyday, she'd wish she had someone too.

I look back out the windshield when we pull into the school parking lot.

"Well," I mutter. "Say what you want."

"I will," she huffs and climbs out of the car, slamming the door behind her.

I don't look at Nathan when I get out of the truck as well. I don't wait for him as I walk into the school feeling the weight of loneliness threaten to crush me.

•••

Literature doesn't help like I expected it too and when Health comes around I think about skipping, but it's already too early in the year as it is. Don't want to start bad habits even though I was provoked by a certain boy I know.

Taking my seat, I reply to some snapchats on my phone and wait for the torture to begin. It doesn't come.

I look to my side and see Jackson writing stuff down on a piece of paper, but he doesn't even look at me.

I ignore the hint of hurt that I feel for a reason unknown to me, and continue to take notes like everybody else.

"Did you know Nikki was with that Adam guy?" His deep voice whispers close to my ear.

I bite my lip, trying to ignore the feeling of his hot breath on my skin.

Shrugging my shoulders, I ignore his question to a certain extent.

"I'm sure you did," he says. "So why don't you explain to me just how long this has been going on, hmm?"

His rough hand slides up my arm creating goosebumps in his wake.

"It's against the code," I whisper back, knocking his hand off my skin.

"What code?" He asks incredulously, eyebrows furrowed and a frown on his lips.

"The code that says not to spit secrets out to best friends family," I bite back.

"Awful rule," he huffs.

I think he's done talking to me when again his lips are right by my ear.

"I have a secret for you," he whispers.

Furrowing my eyebrows I ask the one thing everybody would, "What is it?"

"Meet me in the field house hallway at the end of the day," he instructs and leaves me alone.

A secret? What kind of secret?

•••

Like instructed, after changing into my cheer clothes, I head over to the hallway and door that leads to the football field.

I lean against the cold wall and rub my hands together nervously.

I have no idea what this 'secret' is or what it's about and it's got me on edge. If there even is a secret that is. Who knows, Jackson could be lying just to show me up.

"I thought you wouldn't show," Jackson speaks, making me jump in surprise.

I place a hand over my heart and glare at him. "Why wouldn't I?"

"I don't know," he shrugs, walking closer to me. "I'm doing this because I don't want you to get hurt in the long run, Brittni. Do you understand?"

The sincerity in his voice is what makes my nervousness go crazy. Jackson is never serious and cautious with me.

"Wh-what is it?" I ask, my voice slightly shaky.

"Brittni-" he stops himself. "I want you to go to the room twenty-eighty."

"That room is locked," I say through clenched teeth. He was lying to me. There is no secret.

"Just please," he looks me straight in the eyes. "Go."

I'm about to tell him off when that same look makes its way into his blue iris's.

I nod and turn to leave when his hand catches my wrist.

"I'm always here for you." His words have a double meaning that I can't quite figure out so I nod and he lets go.

Walking down the familiar hallways feels even more foreign as I make it farther and farther away from Jackson and closer to my destination.

I keep thinking of possibilities of what it might be. What might be so secret behind those doors that I thought haven't been open for years.

When I stand in front of the door, I start to feel the sinking feeling of something bigger than me. If what Jackson said earlier - about the door being unlocked - is true, I don't know what will be behind it. The question is, though, what does it have to do with me?

Slowly, I clench my hand around the cold knob, and turn it slower than a snail to the left.

Before my nerves get the best of me, I push the door open and gasp when I find what's on the other side.

Every muscle in my body locks, making it impossible to move from the sight in front of me. Tears blur my vision faster than Niagara Falls, sliding down my cheeks and onto the ground where my heart is now crushed into a tiny million pieces.

"Brittni?" He turns to me with wild eyes and swollen lips.

"How could you?" My voice cracks when I look over at the half naked girl who was just sucking face with my boyfriend.

Ex-boyfriend.
