-----a few hours after Y/N explained the plan to escape the shelter-----

I sat on my usual space in the library- at the floor in front of the couch. Because why be a normal person and sit on the couch when you could confuse all those who pass by.

I flipped through the pages of my book and yawned, hearing a creak at the door. I didn't look up, knowing who it was from the footsteps that followed.

"Everyone's already started the preparations." Ray said as he flopped down on the couch.

I nodded. "That's good..." We sat in a crippling silence until Ray sighed exasperatedly.

"Sooo you going to tell me what's actually going on?" He asked, picking up his own book and flipping through it.

I stayed silent, my mind scanning through multiple different options. What could I say to him? I hate to admit it, but he's smart! What could I even say without him noticing the inconsistencies or notice that I'm lying?!

"...hullooo? You alive in there??"

I tugged on a strand of my hair as I continued in deep thought. 'Tell him I can see the future?? It's an option, and he may believe me... but then there'd be inconsistencies- like why I wasn't able to see that Ray and I would get caught by the poachers, or why I didn't see Nina's death coming earlier... Could I tell him I only see it every once in a while? Maybe glimpses...? Would he even believe something like that-?! But what other explanation is there-" My head was suddenly caught by a pillow, sending me toppling to the floor.

"OI WHAT WAS THAT FOR--!!" I yelled, sitting back up. I yote the pillow back at Ray who caught it then set it back on the couch.

"I was trying to get your attention. Unsurprisingly, violence worked." He shrugged, folding the book in his lap.

I sighed and laid back on the floor, covering my eyes with my arms. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife.

Ray sighed as well, standing up from the couch and taking a seat beside me. He leaned back against a nearby bookshelf and scratched the back of his head. "Is that a no then?" He asked, trying to keep the conversation light, but the disappointment in his voice was palpable.

I chewed the inside of my lip and removed my arms, staring at the ceiling. "No..." I murmured.

Ray paused for a second before speaking again. "Is that a no as in 'no you won't tell me' or a no as in you will?" He asked, picking up his book once again and flipping through the pages.

"No..." I said with another sigh.

Ray turned back to me before looking back to his book. "No as in neither?" He asked.

"No." I said, a small smile beginning to form on my face.

"Then what?"

"No."

"You little-" Ray exhaled exasperatedly, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"No." I said again, the my cheeks trembling as I fought to keep a straight face.

"...You have no intention of telling me, do you." He sighed.

This time I allowed myself to grin. "No."

We sat in silence for another while before I hummed. "Knock knock." I said, breaking the silence.

Ray was quiet for a moment before he relented. "Who's there."

"Interrupting cow." I said, hoping he hadn't heard this one.

Thankfully, he didn't seem to, as he continued. "Interrupting cow w-"

"Moo." Ray looked to me with an eyebrow raised, clearly still not getting the joke.

"Interrupting c-" He tried again to no avail.

"Moo."

I saw the 'joke' click in his eyes and he groaned. "You're not go-"

"Moo." I grinned evilly.

"Going to keep-"

"Moo."

"Doing-"

"MOO!!"

Ray gave up, turning to me with a death glare. I stared back straight-faced, as if I didn't see the problem. He rolled his eyes and decided to keep silent, reading his book.

I got bored after some time and picked up my own book, leaning over the backside of the couch while I read the book, the blood rushing to my face as I hung upside-down. I caught Ray's glances a few times but pretended to ignore him, still flipping pages in my also upside-down book.

After a while he gave up and decided to ask me the question behind his stare. "...what are you-"

"Moo." Ray sent me a withering glare and I laughed. "Ok, I'm done, I'm done."

The ravenhead cleared his throat. "As I was saying, what exactly are you doing?" He asked, referring to my peculiar position and likely my upside-down book as well.

I shrugged. "Reading?" I answered, turning another page.

Ray blinked and sighed. "That's not what I meant." He reevaluated and I shrugged.

"Then what did you mean?" I asked, feigning ignorance.

Our conversation was interrupted by everyone's favourite ginger, Emma, as she ran into the room. "Y/N, it's time for training with Yuugo! If you're late he'll make you do planks with me on your back again!!" She exclaimed worriedly. I blanched, flipping myself upright.

"Oh sh*t!!" I exclaimed, and we dashed down the hall to where that cocky bastard was waiting.

-----

After showering, Emma and I were walking down the hallway as we talked and laughed. We'd barely managed to make it to Yuugo in the dojo before he started the 'lesson', if you can call it that, and as such, we narrowly avoided the cruel punishment of planks and/or pushups while the other sat on our back. The workout was still tiring, though, especially since I'd started 1-on-1 with the big man a little while ago, in which I used dual-knives against the practice-stick wielding man. The number of time's he'd kicked me while I was down or smacked me on the backside with the stick like a paddle was ruthless.

He better watch his back while he sleeps at night.

I let out a loud yawn before impulsively jumping on Emma's back. "ONWARD MY NOBLE STEED!!" I yelled in heavy knight-like British accent.

Emma laughed. "NEIGH!!" She yelled, causing me to snort. She then ran throughout the halls haphazardly, nearly crashing into several people, one of which being Ray, who called after us "SLOW DOWN, DIMWITS!!" after we narrowly missed him while he carried several plates to the kitchen. I stuck my tongue out as we ran away before letting out a loud and childish whoop as Emma ran, the wind rustling my hair.

"WOAHWOAHWOAH!!" Emma said, waving her arms and pretending to nearly fall over as she skidded to a stop. My stomach lurched until she stood back upright, giggling evilly through her heavy breaths.

"OI DON'T DO THAT--!!" I yelled, bopping her on the head.

"Heheheheheheheh." Emma laughed, revealing her true inner gremlin. But she was rightfully exhausted and set me down, panting heavily.

I crouched down and grinned. "Your turn." I said, allowing for her to climb on my back. Emma hopped on gratefully as I sprinted to the kitchen where dinner was nearly ready.

At last, we arrived in the kitchen, just as it was being served. I set Emma down by the doorway and panted heavily. We leaned on eachother for support as we found our places at the table.

"THANKS FOR THE FOOD!!" We yelled, digging in gratefully.

"Don't choke-!!" Poppy yelled as Emma and I scarfed down the food at an inhuman rate.

"Jesus Christ." I heard from Violet, who hadn't seen a human eat so fast, as I finished the bowl of food, setting it down.

"I'LL HAVE SECONDS, PLEASE!!" I yelled, carrying my bowl to the kitchen where Gilda was dishing it out more soup. She rolled her eyes with a smile and gave me more, followed shortly by dishing out a smaller portion to Emma, who arrived in the kitchen after me. I thanked her and ran back to the dining table, pulling back my chair.

"Waitwaitwait- before you begin, we should have a race!" Nigel said, setting his hands down on the table.

I grinned as I sat down. "You're on." I grinned, picking up my spoon. "Emma?" I asked, turning to the ginger girl. She shook her head.

"I think I'll pass. I'm already pretty full." She said as she set down her seconds.

"I'll join." Zack said, taking a seat near the end of the table with us.

I grinned. "Great! Who else~~~" I scanned everyone but they all seemed reluctant- especially the kids from my plant, who had seen me eat for the entire decade of my life here in The Promised Neverland. "Ray?" I asked when no one else joined. To my dismay, the emo boy shook his head no.

"That seems like a great way to choke and die."  He said, setting down his spoon. "Plus, there's no point. We all know who would win." He said, and everyone from Gracefield, including Violet and Oliver, who had witnessed me down the first bowl, nodded.

"Ok, then be the ref." I offered to Ray. He shrugged.

"Sure." He took a seat nearby, pulling his pocket-watch from his pocket. "Ready..." He said, raising his hand in the air. "Go!" He pulled his hand down and I began the eating.

-----

"And Y/N wins with 25 seconds!" He said once I set down my bowl. I wiped my face and grinned. Nigel had barely started and Zack was 3/4 done.

"How the hell-?!" Zack asked in awe. I gave him a thumbs up.

"The trick is not to chew!" I laughed.

"ohmygodhowareyoustillalive-" Ray muttered, face-palming.

Emma gave me a high-five in congratulations while everyone who had not seen me eat before looked horrified.

"It's like it was just sucked in-" "Did she really not chew?!"  They continued asking questions and murmuring, their faces pale.

I leaned back in my chair and yawned. "Now that I'm stuffed I'm tireddd. I'm done for tonight-" I sighed, rubbing my face.

"NO, MORE CONTESTS!!" Several children yelled.

"What?!" I said quickly, sitting up in my seat. "No, no, I think I'm fine-"

But they were too fare gone in the idea. "Yeah!! We gotta see what we can beat Y/N in!!"

And then the evening of contests began. We started with hand-games like rock-paper scissors. I came in first for all of these- likely as Ray opted out of playing.

And then we moved onto target practice- using a bow and arrow, handguns, and snipers. Emma, Zack, Oliver, and I tied in second for all of these, and Yuugo narrowly won after joining in, but Ray once again opted out.

The children then insisted on a sword contest- to see who could cut the deepest in a log of wood- which was pointless, considering I was the only one who practiced the sword. They likely just wanted a demonstration from me. The person who cut into the wood farthest besides me- who cut it 3/4 of the way- was Chris, most surprisingly, who made it nearly halfway. After seeing my clean cut I began to rethink my choice of swords not being useful against demons. I mean, Zazie could do it- but Zazie was also the result of a Lambda experiment which caused him to become insanely strong, so maybe not...

We then moved to card games, and I wrecked everyone at go-fish with 20 matches, killed them in Uno, and stole all their cookie rights in Poker. A couple of the little kids cried, so I gave them back their cookie tickets reluctantly.

And finally, was board games. We started with games like monopoly- which surprised me, finding something like that in this universe. The board game was the exact same as the family-wrecker from back on Earth, however, it was called a different name and how it looked was different too. Like the Rich Uncle Pennybags didn't have a monocle ...wait...

I came in 1st once again while playing Monopoly, narrowly defeating Reina and Sonja. Emma had gone bankrupt early due to giving away all of her spaces to the younger children. Ray chose to watch as usual.

We continued with games like these, including operation, snakes and ladders, checkers, and the like, until we landed on the one game I'd been dreading.

Chess.

It was now rather late at night- for the little ones at least, as we hit 11:00 pm. The younger Gracefield kids all opted out of the tournament as they knew exactly how it would go after their years of playing chess tournaments together. After Gilda, Anna, and Reina put them all to bed they hurried back and joined the tournament.

After hours of playing I was now facing Reina. Everyone had lost at this point, and were now playing eachother to decide the rankings. I bit my lip as Reina and I duelled in our intelligence. The board was splayed out in front of me, and I began making calculations and following paths to try to figure out what to do next. My eyes widened once I finished calculating every path. I was blocked. There was nothing I could do...or... that's what she thought. a small smile spread on my face.

"Check." I grinned, moving my rook in the one open space Reina hadn't anticipated. She stared In shock as she thought I'd left my king open, about to move her own piece into check. But that was when she realized she could do nothing to win. She could keep the game going for a little while longer- and delay the moment of checkmate, but there was nothing she could do to avoid my trap. I was positioned in a way that I'd get her within the next 5 turns at most, no matter the ways she moved.

Sighing, Reina raised her hands in defeat. "There's no out. I've never seen an elaborate trap like this." She said, moving her king away from my rook, hastening my win. I then moved my pawn in position and smiled.

"Checkmate." I grinned. Reina smiled.

"Good game." She said and we shook hands. I leaned back In my chair. I was dreading this for a while, but chess turned out not to be so bad, as long as...

The chair across from me was dragged back as the person I was dreading the arrival of took a seat. Ray sat down across from me and placed his chin in his folded hands, beginning to set the board up.

"A-ahhh its already late maybe another time-??" I said quickly, but Ray rolled his eyes.

"You'll keep on trying to find a way out of it, like our conversation earlier. We're doing this now." He said and I sighed, beginning to set up the pieces.

In the beginning of the match, everyone paused what they were doing to watch. After an hour of the match, though, they began to slowly disperse.

Once it hit 2:00 am everyone but Reina and Emma had left, who were both curious of the result.

After 3:00, though, they both said their respectable goodnights and left.

Hours went by as Ray and I continued our match, both of us unable to win. I considered throwing the match to go to sleep multiple times, but something told me Ray would know and wouldn't be impressed.

-----

I groaned, rubbing my eyes. What an uncomfortable position. I was sitting down in a chair, head resting on a chessboard. Several pieces stuck to my face. I tried to remember what happened last night, and the memories slowly came back. The last thing I remember was asking Ray if we should call it a draw. What time was that? 4:00 am? I'm certain we played longer, though...

Ray, across from me, was also collapsed over the chess board, and my eyes focused on his hand which was inches from my face. I rubbed my eyes and sat up, stretching. It was cold in this room, and my chilly fingers gripped the blanket that had been draped over my shoulders. Ray had a matching one as well.

I yawned as Ray began to stir as well. He sat up and rubbed his eyes, them landing on me and the chessboard. "I guess we fell asleep." He said with a frown. But then his eyes focused on the chessboard and mine followed his, my eyes widening.

Only our two kings remained, standing in checkmate position.

"W-who's turn was it?!" Ray exclaimed.

I smiled nervously. "I don't remember."

Ray groaned. "We'll just never know." He sighed. "Maybe someone else saw?" He asked hopefully. I shrugged.

"If we continued late enough maybe someone was up early enough to see?" I hummed.

At that moment, Emma came walking into the room. "Oh! I was just about to wake you two up!" She exclaimed before running closer. "So who won???" She asked excitedly, the fire of curiosity burning brightly in her eyes.

"That's what we'd like to ask." Ray said, rubbing his hair as he tried to fix his bedhead.

Emma frowned. "Whaa-?! So you don't know??? Then-then after all that its a draw??!!" She whined.

I smiled. "I guess it's a draw." I said, holding my hand out for Ray to shake.

"It's a draw." The ravenhead grumbled, shaking my hand.

(✨✨ I need to go drink my funny juice. I hope you enjoyed anyway, though. I'll  t r y to make the next chapter good!!)
