Chapter 354 - Why Did the Turtle Eat the Cookies? (1)

Fang JunRong went silent for a little while, then said, "I take back what I have said, I apologize. And thank you for being fond of me."

She really wasn't in the right mindset to start a new relationship right now so she was going to have to be the "nice guy" to him.

"I feel that I have impeccable taste." Jiang DeXian stressed again.

Not everyone was blind like Li WangJin. To many, the name "Li WangJin" now represents a blind man.

"I am not into office romance." She did not want to mix work with her private life.

"I can quit my job as your assistant."

Then he could work for her for free.

Fang JunRong got his subtle meaning and her lips twitched.

Truth be told, it stroked her ego that a handsome young man was interested in her.

As for whether she would go for it or not, only time would tell. Most importantly, the two of them shared the same experience and she would not need to worry about slipping in front of him.

As such, she tended to be more relaxed around him.

Even though the two of them had already had the conversation, the way they got along did not change.

It wasn't that Fang JunRong didn't want to look for a new assistant. Problem was it was always difficult going from riches to rags.

She was already used to having Jiang DeXian, the super assistant soit was very difficult for her to switch to someone else.

Well, she would just have to leave things as they were for now and take her time in looking for a new assistant.

She got time.

Going forward, she would just pay Jiang DeXian directly out of her own pocket.

A few days later, Fang JunRong said she had bought herself a pet and presented her turtle to the others. XinYun even named it Kuaikuai (T/L: "fast") as this turtle could move around quickly, very different from what one would normally think of a turtle.

Fang JunRong knew full well that the turtle could move at lightning speed when it wanted to.

She had already warned Kuaikuai to not do anything too out of the ordinary. It's current speed would bring about exclamations but not so much that it would be sent to a laboratory.

Kuaikuai was also a picky eater and would only eat the fruits from the dimension.

It would not eat the regular fruits from the market. That made sense, as it was a pet from the dimension.

Fang JunRong had further learned that it would also eat gems such as jadeite. Fang JunRong wasn't paying too much attention one time and she lost a bracelet that way.

She only figured it out from the crumbs left on its mouth. Kuaikuai was lectured. Fruits were alright but eating gems would be like burning her money!

All in all, Fang JunRong's family very much welcomed Kuaikuai, especially XinYun. She would bring it with her to show it off from time to time.

August 16, XinYun's debutante was finally here.

Fang JunRong booked the best hotel in City S to celebrate XinYun's birthday.

There were a lot of guests that day and XinYun was the brightest pearl that day. She had on an entire set of jadeite head ornaments.

The glass-type jadeites came from the rock that she had bought in the past. Their sparks caught everyone's attention.

Anyone who knew gems could tell that the set cost at least hundreds of millions of yuan. They were surprised: Fang JunRong spoiled this daughter so much.

Anyone who ended up marrying Li XinYun, saying that they would shave off 10 years in their career path would be an understatement.

Many had thought about whether they had children around Li XinYun's age.

It wouldn't hurt to befriend for the odd chance that they could become Fang JunRong's son-in-law. Nevertheless, nobody would bring up something like that on a date like this. That would be offensive to the host.

In addition to the set of jadeite head ornaments, the other present that Fang JunRong had given to XinYun was an entire building located in the heart of the city, adding more wealth to her already impressive net worth.

Should XinYun's business fail, she could always resort to being a landlady.

Looking at how proud her daughter was, Fang JunRong felt a burning ache in her nose. She had changed the fate of many in this lifetime but nothing made her happier than changing the tragic end of her daughter.

Li XinYun's debutante ended under everyone's envious look and her status within the family could not have been clearer.

Chapter 355 - Why Did the Turtle Eat the Cookies? (2)

As the banquet ended sort of late, Fang JunRong thought that XinYun would sleep in today as well. Unexpectedly, XinYun got up early in the morning.

XinYun yawned as she said to Fang JunRong, "It's a classmate's birthday today so we made plans to go to karaoke together and that will also double as her birthday celebration."

Fang JunRong smiled at her, "Must be someone you are close with then."

As lazy as this girl was, she would probably rather be home sleeping otherwise. It had been a rough few days leading up to her birthday banquet.

Li XinYun chomped down on the fruit. She felt that she had been revived after she had finished an apple. "Mmm, yeah. We were always in the same class starting grade school all the way through senior high school and our birthdays are only one day apart. What are the odds of that, right?"

She had a point there.

Fang JunRong asked, "You have a gift ready?"

"Of course, since a long time ago."

Something suddenly occurred to Li XinYun. "Speaking of, I had a nightmare last night. I don't remember all the details but I remember the part that my face was ruined and I killed myself by jumping off of a building."

She still had lingering fear after she had woken up. Luckily, it was just a nightmare.

For some inexplicable reason, she felt hatred whenever she thought about Li ShiZe and Li WangJin.

Could it have to do with the nightmare that she had the night before?

Hearing her words, Fang JunRong hand that was holding onto a fork paused.

She said to XinYun, "It was just a dream." That was right. That would not happen in this lifetime.

Her daughter would be happy and healthy for life and her life had just started.

Li XinYun did not know her mother's thoughts but also didn't spend too much time dwelling on her dream.

Her plan was to get a makeover so she could attend her friend's birthday dinner in her best self.

She had just walked inside her bedroom when she let out a loud scream. "No! What are you doing, Kuaikuai? Let go! No! Stop eating! No biting my gift!"

Fang JunRong could hear her screaming all the way from downstairs and she quickly ran upstairs.

As soon as she got inside her room, she saw XinYun complaining to her with her cheeks all puffed up. "Mom, look at Kuaikuai! How could it?!"

Fang JunRong saw Kuaikuai happily nibbling on some small cookies.

Li XinYun complained, "The cookies were handmade for me by my friend. The snacks that she made are delicious."

She had planned to snack on those in the afternoon.

After all, they wouldn't keep for very long.

Fang JunRong robbed her temples and had no idea why the turtle who had always been a picky eater suddenly became interested in these cookies? Did these cookies smell better than the others?

That didn't make sense either. There had always been delicious snacks around the house but Kuaikuai basically only ate things from the dimension.

Unfortunately, she could not communicate with the turtle and had no idea what the turtle was thinking.

Kuaikuai was also very possessive, it had wanted to snatch the cookies back but, when it saw Fang JunRong, it listlessly lowered its head.

Narrowing her eyes, Fang JunRong picked up a few pieces of the cookies with tweezers, put them inside a bag, and had someone deliver them to the laboratory for further examination.

Was there mystical energy in the cookies? If that was the case, perhaps they could invest in XinYun's classmate's shop.

XinYun sighed and said, "Nevermind. I didn't pay it enough attention. I'll just apologize to her."

It was a well-meant gift from her friend and kind of awful to end up being eaten by their pet at home, even if her friend didn't know about it.

Then XinYun started to get worried. "Can turtles eat cookies? Would it get diarrhea?"

Fang JunRong's lips twitched a little and said slowly. "I don't think so."

The turtle, after all, came from the dimension. It could even eat jades and gems. How could some cookies hurt it?

There were some cookies left in the box but Fang JunRong was certain that Li XinYun would not be eating them. Those were, after all, leftovers from Kuaikuai. Fang JunRong started feeding the remaining ones to Kuaikuai.

To her surprise, Kuaikuai quickly devoured the entire box of cookies that was enough to make an adult human to be half-full.

Had someone stacked up all of the cookies, they would be bigger than Kuaikuai in size! Kuaikuai was eating so happily and so fast that Fang JunRong didn't even realize it until she had fed it the entire box.

Li XinYun had a solemn look on her face. "Is its mouth connected to a different dimension? Where did all the food go?"

Chapter 356 - Why Did the Turtle Eat the Cookies? (3)

Li XinYun started to get worried. She wondered if she needed to give the turtle some pills to help with its digestion.

Her spinning around gave Fang JunRong a headache, so she resorted to sending Li XinYun on her way. "You should hurry up and go have your makeover done. Didn't you say you want to be the prettiest star today?"

Li XinYun stuck her tongue out. "I'll be leaving in a second. You don't need to prepare lunch for me. I'll just eat outside."

Unfortunately, Li XinYun's trip was not meant to be. Fang JunRong received a call from Jiang WenYu before Li XinYun could leave the house.

Jiang WenYu performed the analysis personally and his voice had never been more solemn. "Who sent you the snacks? They contained narcotics."

"Are you sure about that?" Fang JunRong took a deep breath. She wasn't sure if he had heard him right.

"I think I will at least be able to tell that much. Was it a gift that you have received? You didn't eat any, did you?"

Fang JunRong's immediate reaction was to look over at Kuaikuai. Would it be okay after eating those?

Then the feeling of fear after the incident surged up within her.

Luckily, XinYun didn't eat any of them. Had Kuaikuai not eaten them first, knowing how XinYun was, she would have eaten all of them just to be appreciative of her friend's effort.

Fang JunRong's face dropped. Her roiling anger inside of her was almost uncontrollable.

She didn't care who it was behind it but, trying to do that to a kid was a lowly act!

Li XinYun was at loss. "What's wrong with the cookies?"

She saw that her mother was so angry that she was about to burst into flames after she received the call.

Even when her mother was very angry after finding out that her father had cheated on her, it was still the restrained kind of anger. She had never let it shown outwardly.

Fang JunRong let out a deep breath and her voice was cold. "Are you sure this was given to you by your friend in person? Not something that someone had swapped out?"

By now Li XinYun had figured that there was something wrong with the cookies.

She had thought that her mother was going overboard when she sent the cookies over to the laboratory but she, too, was nervous now. "Yeah, she made them. She designs her own cookie molds and they can't be found elsewhere."

She even praised how her friend was very good with her hands.

"What's inside the cookies?" She stared anxiously at Fang JunRong, looking a little frantic.

Fang JunRong said to her, "There was narcotics in them."

Li XinYun could hear firecrackers exploding in her ears. Redness left her cheeks bit by bit. "Is that true?"

Fang JunRong nodded solemnly.

Li XinYun pulled out her cellphone and, as her hand was shaking, she almost dropped her phone.

Fang JunRong placed her hand on her daughter's shoulder and comforted her, "Perhaps someone else was trying to get to you through her."

Li XinYun nodded forcefully. "Yes, that is certainly a possibility as well." She would much rather believe in that possibility rather than having to believe that her own friend was trying to harm her.

She felt much calmer after looking at her mother. She lowered her head and dialed Zhang MeiXia, her friend. Her friend picked up the call quickly. "MeiXia."

"What's the matter, XinYun?"

Li XinYun asked her, "Did you make those cookies yourself? They were very tasty. You got any more of them?"

"Yes. They were presents for you, of course I made them myself. I'm glad you liked them. I can bring more this afternoon if you like. You must come today. No skipping out on us."

"I'll be there."

Li XinYun lowered her eyes and bit her lower lip reflexively.

Her cheerfulness was gone and her heart sank. So was Zhang Meixia aware of the problems with her cookies?

She did not want to suspect her own friend but, right now, all evidence pointed toward her, especially when she stressed that she must be there in the afternoon.

She knew that it was wrong to doubt one's own friend but she couldn't help herself right now.

Her heart sank deeper and deeper.
