Khi lay lazily in bed, rubbing Kari's back as she slept for the third time that morning. She was sore and tired—which he expected. He didn't wanna force her out of bed, because her mood would be terrible on top of her body hurting. He was a little sore too—but he knew it wouldn't be as bas as her.

"Bubba?" she muttered against his chest.

"Hmm?" he hummed, patting her back now. "What's the matter?" he asked.

"I'm hungry," she said simply. "Did anyone cook?" she asked refusing to raise her head. Instead, she snuggled deeper into his embrace, making him smile.

"Mmm no, nobody texted me. They might be sleep too, they was out late last night," he said. Thankfully, their friends had decided when the two left the night prior that they'd go to the beach. According to Trae's text that morning, they also went to waffle house and back to the beach again, where Dontae ended up dozing off, and then they all hid, pretending like they left him there.

By this time, Khi and Kari were both knocked out sleeping, but he was glad they had a good time together.

"Oh okay," she nodded, seemingly giving up on the idea of eating. That's how he knew she was really tired—she was never one to give up on some food. "You sleepy still?"

"No mama," he chuckled. "I been up. But if you tired we can stay here," he suggested. He loved cuddling with his girlfriend, more than most things. Weirdly enough, it was one of the few times of the day where he he didn't feel the compulsion to get up and do a million other things. He was very calm and mild when she was in his arms.

Even as a kid, after school where Khi would usually be full of energy, if Sakari wanted to take a nap he was holding her hand while she slept and he did not move, much to his parents amazement. If Kari finished all her dinner, there he was doing his best to finish too, even though on most days his mom had to bargain with him to attempt to finish a plate.

Nobody really understood it, but nobody questioned it either because it was obvious the balance that they brought each other, especially as they started to grow.

"Bub," she mumbled again and he tried not to laugh because she sounded drunk.

"Yes, baby?"

"I am very hungry," she muttered and he laughed that time. "Did I say that already? I'm sorry," she chuckled tiredly.

He didn't mind at all, clearly.

After another few minutes she was deeply sleeping again, so he shimmied her down to the mattress and tucked her in securely, pressing a kiss to her head before grabbing a shirt and heading upstairs.

Once he reached the kitchen, he saw Trae yawning, staring at the open refrigerator.

"I know you ain't running mama Crystal bill up," he spoke, making Trae jump.

"Nigga fuck you," he laughed. "My mama pay her bills and her bills are paid don't worry bout allat. Y'all hungry? We ain't buy enough breakfast food for everyone," he said after analyzing the contents of the fridge for 10 minutes straight.

"Well shit," Khi huffed. "Kari starving, I could eat. We should get something, just bring it back, right?" he suggested and Trae nodded.

They both talked for a little and tried to decide where to go when Khi spotted Dontae on the balcony smoking—which he absolutely should not have been doing because their coach was an ass. He was going to get his input when he saw who he was with, and who was actually smoking.

"Tae busy," he smirked, jerking his thumb outside. Traveon peeked as discreetly as possible and his eyes widened at the sight before slapping Khi's arms. "Ow! Nigga come on so they can eat," he laughed, and turned Trae around.

Outside, Kimani smoked silently, waking up early despite the late night. Tae held her calf in his lap, rubbing it back and forth shallowly. He was dead tired, but she wanted to be up, so he was up with her watching the sunrise and now just basking in the late morning sun.

Tae felt lucky, honestly. Most of his attempts at relationships didn't end well and he was sure that it was just about time to give up when he met Kimani. He met her in one of his classes a while back, and they were partnered for a project. Despite his funny disposition and constant joke telling he took school very seriously to Mani's surprise, and they aced the project.

He made the first move to get to know her more after that and although he always had a strong attraction to her, and desired more than what they shared, he never spoke on it simply because he didn't want this relationship to end like all the others. He had a good thing with her and he didn't want to lose it.

But after talking to Trae and Khi before Valentine's day, he realized the risk may be worth it. He took her out that night but he couldn't bring himself to bring it up until the middle of the night, when they were both up, laying in the dark.

"Mani," he said simply staring up at the ceiling.

"Tae?" she responded.

"I-um," he stammered, trying to gain his footing in what he was attempting to say. "I really like being here. With you," he said.

"I like when you're with me too," she said, and he heard the smile in her video without having to see her face.

After a longer bout of silence he spoke again. "What...what would you say if I told you I really like you. And I want more with you?" he fidgeted with his hands, anxiously awaiting her answer.

"Well...you'll have to tell me first, huh?" she spoke back and his eyes widened. And that was where he left it, stuck there and nervous to take another step as if he wasn't already there to begin with.

And now, here he was, right where he wanted to be. But the nagging voice in the back of his head told him to speak up. He knew he had to sooner or later, and sooner was beginning to sound like his best bet.

"Kimani," he spoke again and she hummed in response. "Look at me," he requested and she popped her eyes open, turning her head to face him.

"Yes, Dontae?" she quirked an eyebrow up. "You okay?"

He only nodded. "Listen. You know I'm not good at this relationship shit and I probably been getting on your last nerve beating around the bush and waiting. But...but I like you. I really like you and I want more with you," he finally told her, as she wanted him to.

All his nerves seemed to wash away with the waves ahead of them when a genuine smile began to curl up Kimani's face till it was a wide grin.

"Yeah?" she asked, and he bursted out laughing, completely forgetting she was high.

"Yeah," he nodded. "Gimme a kiss if you agree. That's the only answer I'll accept," he stated, no longer feeling an ounce of anxiety now that she'd made him so comfortable.

She pretended to think about it for a second, before leaning out of her chair and holding his face in her hand, gently kissing his full lips.

"Was that acceptable enough?" she mumbled, still inches away.

"Mmm, nah, one more. Just to be sure, you know?" he replied, making her giggle and kiss him again.

Once she finally pulled back, she relit her blunt with a smile and continued what she was doing.

"Wait wait wait!" Tae held his hands up and Mani quickly turned her head to face him again. "You my girlfriend now," he laughed childishly and she sucked her teeth, looking away again. "You stuck with my annoying ass, this is so exciting," he poked at her side and she whined, writhing away.

"Oh you're sick. This was a trap," she pointed dramatically and he laughed some more, happy he could finally let go of the feeling sitting on his chest, and feel it with her instead. Being in it felt so much better than being under it constantly.

"Oh you got worked the fuck out," Jeli laughed as Kari walked upstairs in her bikini, in turn making Aja laugh as she just blushed, covering her face.

"Leave her alone," Aja giggled. "Come on, they're waiting outside already," she offered her arm to Kari.

It was late afternoon now, around 4:30. The group decided to make the best of the rest of their day and spend it on the beach together. They were in the Outer Banks for two more days and everyone was already dreading going back to campus.

"We're here!" Jeli announced as they tiptoed over the hot sand to where Kimani waited on their blanket with some snacks and drinks. "You look so cute! I love this color on you," she smiled.

"Oh, thank you," she grinned. Little by little, Mani was opening up to the girls and they were loving it. She was fitting in perfectly fine, and they hoped she'd come around more, even after spring break was over.

After getting set up on the towel, the girls sprayed down with some sunscreen and Sakari was first to lay out on her towel, breathing in deeply, taking in the sun and warm air. This was all she wanted—the water could wait.

"Baby!" she heard Khi call. It took her a second but she sat back up, shielding her eyes from the sun and looking at him in the water with the guys. "Come here!"

"I'm relaxing!" she called back and she saw his face straighten. "You come here!" she waved, almost sure he wouldn't because he was having fun—but she was proved wrong when he came jogging over.

Sometimes she forgot how much he loved to be near her. That thought usually only lasted about three minutes before he was looking for her to cuddle.

"You not gon get in?" he asked, dropping to sit beside her. "It's nice out,"

"It's very nice out," she nodded in agreement. "But, I think you've conveniently forgotten that my thighs are killing me," she chuckled and he couldn't help but to laugh. "When y'all are done acting crazy in the water, I'll get in,"

He only nodded in response, with a smirk on his face as she lay back down on the blanket. "Lemme get a kiss before I go back," he smoothed his hand over her stomach while she lay peacefully, and a smile started to creep up on her face.

"See I would," she inhaled sharply. "But I just ran out of kisses this morning. My bad,"

"You get on my damn nerves," he laughed. "Gimme a damn kiss before I toss you in the water," he feigned a threat, starting to lift her up from the sand, as if she weighed absolutely nothing.

"Mekhi, I will whoop yo black ass blue. Put me down!" she fussed, kicking her legs in his grasp. "Khi!" she gave up fighting physically and started to whine.

"This could all be solved very quickly," he shrugged. "You have something that belongs to me, ma'am," he said.

"I told you I ain't have none left!" she persisted in being difficult, just because she loved to do so. Especially to him.

"You better make one appear. Do some Harry Potter shit. Wingardium Leviosa me a kiss," he said seriously, making her crack up laughing. Semaja went through a very heavy Harry Potter phase and she always had them watching the movies. Clearly, though, Mekhi didn't pay a lick of attention.

"Here!" she pecked his lips twice. "You big baby,"

"I'll be that," he chuckled, letting her down from his lap back onto her towel.

"Wait! Where you going?" she called as he stood to his feet. "Don't leave," she pouted, reaching her arms out to him.

"Wasn't you just calling me a baby? Hold that," he pointed and her jaw dropped. "I'm playing! You look like you finna kill me," he laughed, settling back down and letting her shimmy in between his legs and rest her head against his abdomen.

"I might, if you keep playing with me," she sassed back, while he began slowly caressing her face with his left hand, falling into the usual rhythm of tugging and thumbing across her bottom lip while his other hand supported his body.

"Whatever. You not finna beat my ass lil girl," he chuckled and instead of replying she just bit his finger, making him reflexively snatch his hand away and pop her exposed thigh, getting a giggle out of her. "Nah, lil horny freaky fuck you like that shit, I can't pop you no more,"

"Mekhi!" she gasped, and he gathered that he won that argument by the way she couldn't rebut him. "You make me sick,"

"Sick? I'on think that's a good synonym for we—"

"Shut up!" she called over him, making him laugh even harder.

After a full day at the beach, the guys were tasked with making dinner while the girls sipped drinks, very courteously made by Evan.

"Ain't no damn reason they got the music that loud to make some food," Jelani fussed as the current volume went even higher as a Polo G song Kari couldn't recognize blasted through the speakers.

"And don't," Kari agreed. "But we getting a free meal so let them do them, we can go on the porch," she chuckled and waved the girls out to the patio, overlooking the water and the pretty full moon.

They all settled on the reclining chairs with their drinks and it seemed like a collective sigh came from them all as they welcomed the sounds from outside instead of then ones inside. They didn't really have to speak, they were all enjoying the momentary silence.

"Um," Kimani began, nobody really minding that she broke the silence either. "Thank you guys for letting me come on your trip, I know you don't know me all that well, but I really appreciate it," she spoke in a small voice, toying with the straw in her cup.

"It's no problem at all, girl!" Kari was the first to reply. Although she still wasn't a huge social butterfly, she was a little more social nowadays and she saw a lot of how she was before in Kimani, and was happy Dontae asked to bring her along.

"Right, we're just glad you're having fun. We know we cam be a lot sometimes," Jeli giggled.

"By we, she means just me and her," Aja laughed.

"No no, I really like how y'all are, nobody's scared to be....themselves especially in public. It's really cool, I've never had friends like y'all before," she shrugged, a small smile gracing her features.

"We'll that's great," Jeli threw her arms up. "We only get more annoying from here," she cheesed, and Mani laughed.

The girls talked a little bit more before falling into another comfortable silence, the quiet thump of the bass and the boys muffled singing not taking too much away from it.

Luckily, by the time the food was done, nothing smelled burnt and nothing was on fire, so everyone gladly sat at the table, the food set in the middle while everyone dished out their own portions.

"Who taught y'all how to fry chicken?!" Aja asked, as she put two pieces on her plate. "It looks so good,"

"My mama taught me," Evan said. "She said she'll be damned if she only has sons and she the only one who cook so me and my brother cook whenever we home," he chuckled.

"I made the cornbread, it's delicious," Dontae said, pushing it toward the middle so everyone would take some. "Jiffy is very reliable," he added, making everyone laugh.

"Oh, I made the greens," Trae pointed. "We had to go get some damn neckbones, so please eat them, these shits was expensive," he ranted, in Traveon fashion.

"What'd you make, Bubba?" Kari turned to Mekhi, who's mouth was currently full of food. "Oh Lord," she giggled.

"Hm?" he looked up, and saw everyone looking at him. "Oh, hold on," he mumbled, drinking some water to swallow his food. "What I make? The mac and cheese, and that kool-aid," he grinned, proud of himself.

Kari already knew the mac and cheese was good if he made it the way his mother does. Kari used to be so excited for family functions and dinners just so she could have Tam's mac and cheese.

After dinner, the girls did the dishes since they guys cooked, and they picked a movie while they waited. It didn't take long at all, since there were four girls, and before they knew it, everyone was sprawled out in the living room, watching 'Why Did I Get Married?'

"Tyler Perry really a menace to society for this shit" Khi shook his head. "How the hell he got my auntie Jill stuck on a mountain? And then, and then her husband ugly bald headed ass got the nerve to be a bitch to everybody else?! That's why she cracked that bottle over his bald ass head," he fussed.

"Yeah this whole scene was a train wreck. These niggas ain't need to be friends acting like this," Dontae laughed.

"Mr. Perry is a criminal, clearly," Jeli shook her head.

They always seemed to do this—to find the flaws in movies they watched and make fun of them for the entire duration of the film, and this one made it all too easy.

But—since they had just eaten such a heavy dinner, by the end, everyone was knocked out sleeping in the living room, laid up and tangled together while the tv shined on them, not a care in the world as they enjoyed their last few days on spring break—not ready to leave and head back to school.
