"Wait! You gave me information about the thief, and I healed Subaru. We're even now, so there is no need to help me anymore!" Emilia stepped out in front of you, and you stop.

"No, that's not true. You helped us with the thugs and then you healed me, so we still owe you one. Now let's go." Subaru took the lead, and left the alleyway.

He turned around, and said, "What are you waiting for, we need to go as soon as possible!"

You look at Emilia, shrug your shoulders, and join Subaru. Emilia sighed, and followed along.

The three of you and Puck walked towards the direction that Felt had headed.

There was an awkward silence, but it was broken by Subaru. "By the way, what is an insignia? Is it one of those badge things that shows your social status?"

Emilia bobbed her head. "That's a pretty crude description, but yeah, that's pretty much it. It is about this big, and it has a jewel in the center." She made a circle shape with her hand to show you the size.

Given this information, Subaru looked at you. "(Y/N), how did you know that the girl took Emilia's insignia? How did you even know what an insignia is?"

He narrowed his eyes in suspicion.

Don't worry Subaru, I didn't make this up. Felt really does have the insignia, but I don't have any solid proof.

This question piqued both Emilia and Puck's attention. Everybody is looking at you, waiting for an answer.

"Well, unlike you, Subaru, I wasn't staring at her body."

"Hey!" Subaru shouted in protest.

"You know its true!" This shut him up, and your other companions gave Subaru a dirty look. "Well, unlike you, I saw that she was holding something, and once Emilia said that her insignia was stolen, I made the connection. The thing that the thief was holding looked like an insignia, so it must've been what Emilia was looking for."

Of course, all of this was a lie, but it would have to do.

"How observant of you, (Y/N)!" praised Puck. He then looked at Subaru. "Learn to be more like him."

"Hey! Can't someone praise me for something? I just wish that somebody would treat me nicely today!" Subaru whined, and he hung his head down.

"You say that, but Emilia here would have left us without you. Give yourself some credit for the good things you've done. Don't just linger on all the negative things." You pat him on the back while saying this.

Subaru smiled. "Thanks, (Y/N). I don't know if getting beat up and passing out is worthy of praise, but thanks."

Sorry about that, Subaru. I knew that you were in a lot of pain, but I wasn't brave enough to put myself in any real danger. I promise that I'll get stronger so I won't be on the sidelines forever.

During this exchange, Puck stared at you. "He's hiding something," he whispered to Emilia. "I said that I didn't sense any malice, but I do sense that he is concealing something."

"It's fine, Puck. He seems like a good person. Besides, with you by my side, there is nothing to worry about."

She said this a little above a whisper, so you and Subaru faintly hear the talking. "What? I didn't hear what you said, " commented Subaru.

"Oh, its nothing." Emilia gave a big smile, and it made both of you forget about it. "By the way, I can search for my insignia on my own from here. You may think of my helping you as two separate deeds, but I view it only as one, so I still think that you don't have to come and help me."

"Nonsense," exclaimed Subaru, "even if you only think of your aid as one deed, we will continue helping you for our own satisfaction. Right, (Y/N)?"

"Yep." You know that you and Subaru could technically go to the loot house without Emilia, but as far as you could tell, Subaru hasn't died yet, so you should follow the original Re:Zero plot for now.

"No, I've already told you that I've received enough compensation for my services. I don't want to be a bother to you two." Emilia sure was stubborn, but she was talking to people just as stubborn as she was.

"Okay then, if that is the case, we uh... we want to do one good deed a day, so we need to help you!" Subaru sure was good at coming up with stuff on the fly.

"Yeah, so please let us help!" You say this last bit to push Emilia to decide to let you continue helping her.

"You should accept their offer. I see nothing bad that could come from it," said Puck. "Besides," he added, "they could serve as pretty good meat shields."

For a moment, a thought came through: was it really a good idea to follow the original timeline, or should you do something to drastically change it?

Well, you know what they say: it's better to face the evil you know rather than to risk the one you don't know.

As you thought this, Subaru seemed to have called you a few times. Shaking your head to clear the thoughts, you said, "Oh, sorry about that... what were you saying?"

"Are you coming or not? You keep on saying that you want to help out, but once we started walking, you just stood there. Make up your mind, man!" Subaru said this, and you walk up to him.

"Sorry man, I just got lost in my thoughts for a second there."

Subaru seemed to understand. "Oh, that's fine. Just don't hold us up, okay?"

"We could say the same to you," joked Puck.

Subaru gently punched Puck. This seemed to surprise him. "It's unusual to see someone that can casually touch a spirit like that. Where exactly are you from?"

Right after Puck asked this, you put your hand up, signaling to Subaru that you'd explain. Unlike him, you already came up with a response that didn't seem so stupid.

"We lived in a small village that sits just outside of this country's borders. We speak the same language there, but we have a different writing system and different currency.  That is why we can't read any signs or buy anything."

You came up with this response while Subaru was being healed earlier. In fact, you even came up with a story that explains why you were in the city in the first place. There shouldn't be any glaring holes in this story, so you felt comfortable in that aspect.

"Oh, that explains a lot," claimed a surprised Puck. "No wonder you're so helpless. You're broke, and you probably don't have any people here that can help you."

"They may be in an even worse situation than we are," stated Emilia.

"Well, I doubt that. Aren't you rich or something, since you seem to have such a valuable possession?" asked Subaru.

"No. I'm also broke." Both of our jaws were gaping after Emilia said this.

Well, she isn't lying. Roswaal is the one with all the money, so Emilia is technically broke.

"Well... we can always do some manual labor, right (Y/N)? I try to work out and stay in good shape since I'm the shut-in protector of my house."

"Yeah, I guess. I don't work out, but I'd say that I'm in decent shape."

Subaru's use of terminology confused Emilia. "I don't know what a 'shut-in' is, but I guess that means that you are from a reputable family, correct?"

Out of the blue, she grabs Subaru's left hand and your right hand. She examined both before saying, "Your fingers don't look like the working type at all, and the muscles don't look like the kind that you get from field work."

Dang. I need to think of a way to explain this...

"Like I said before, we come from a village in a forest, but we didn't exactly do much physical work. You see, most of our population was composed of men, so there were very few women to do chores. Because of this, all children help the women inside until they are 18. This is what Subaru meant when he said 'shut-in'. We are shut inside doing chores instead of doing real work."

You made this up on the spot, and hoped that everybody would buy this.

Emilia seemed like she believed you, but you couldn't read Puck.

Subaru, silently thanking you for coming up with such a great cover story, said, "Well, I guess we should start asking around. We saw the thief, so we should see if anybody recognizes her from our description."

"That's a great idea Subaru, lets go!" Emilia started walking towards a crowed street, and everyone followed.

Time skip

"Dang. Not even a single lead..." Subaru sighed.

We were all disappointed that nobody seemed to recognize the insignia thief. Of course, you already know that it is Felt, and where she lives, but you know that bringing this up would be very suspicious.

While everyone was sulking, Emilia noticed something. "That child over there, don't you think that she looks lost?"

"We can't lose focus. Don't forget about finding the thief." You say this so that Emilia doesn't get another bad impression of Subaru. To be honest, you could probably use some negative feedback for once, since you've just been showered with praise and good luck this whole time for some odd reason...

"Well, I know that it's important, but if she's lost, we have to do something." Emilia took a firm stance, signaling that she would not leave before you find the child's parents.

"Y-Yeah, (Y/N), we should go and help. Emilia helped us even though she didn't need to, so we should do the same for the kid, right?" While Subaru was talking to you, Emilia went ahead and approached the child.

You and Subaru see that, almost immediately, the child started crying. You nudge Subaru, and he walks up to them.

You stay back and watch as Subaru does a coin trick, which somehow makes the kid stop crying. Well, whatever. As long as you guys made it to the loot house, you were fine with these detours.

Subaru and Emilia guided the girl back to her mother, which didn't take long. "Hey Emilia," asked Subaru, "what benefit do you insist that you got out of that? I know that you like helping people, but how did that help you?"

Emilia smiled warmly. "That's easy! Now we can continue our search with our minds at ease because we did the right thing." A sudden thought hit her. "By the way Subaru, since you helped out, isn't that your good deed for the day?"

"You know Emilia, you are being really nitpicky about this!" he responded.

You decided to cut in. "Well, I still have my good deed left, so you can help me with that Subaru." After saying this, you decide that you want to speed up the search. "Why don't we head toward where the theft happened? Maybe we can find some clues."

Everybody decided that this was a good idea, so Emilia led you back to where her insignia was stolen.

When you arrive at the scene of the crime, there was a familiar face. Subaru also notices this, and he walks toward him.

"I have valiantly come back to this fruit stand looking for clues!" He used his best fake smile, but it had no effect.

"It's you again!" The Appa guy seemed pretty irritated. "If you're not gonna buy my Appas, scram! I don't want you tak-"

"Hey mister, thank you for your help earlier!" The little girl from earlier came up and hugged Subaru.

"?" Everybody was confused except for you.

"What are you doing here?" asked Subaru.

It was the little girl's mother that responded. "This is my husband's shop, so we just stopped by."

The merchant was still confused. "How do you know these good-for-nothings?" he asked his wife.

She pointed to their daughter. "Well, she got lost and they found her and brought her back to me."

After hearing this, Appa guy cleared his throat. "Well, sorry about my attitude earlier. You said that you came looking for clues?" He looked at Subaru with an apologetic expression.

Emilia lightly hit you in the shoulder after hearing this. "See (Y/N), a little extra bit of effort on our part came back around in our favor!"

Subaru, who didn't hear her, described the thief. "You sayin' that she's a nimble blonde, right? Because that sounds like Felt. She lives somewhere in the slums, but I don't know exactly where."

This information made all of you excited. "Thank you so much! You just helped us so much! I'll make sure to come back and buy some Appas from you!"

After saying this, Subaru ran off. You and Emilia followed him.

"Off to the slums, we have a thief to catch!"
