You become the monster you fear the most so the monster won't overtake you..

I exhale, taking a step into the only barely manageable school in town. East High. I shake my head at the thought of leaving this school to go to anywhere the hell my dad had planned for me.

"You look like you saw a rat swallow a bigger rat and then...you swallowed it." Kat, one of the girls in my grade, who I actually find time to chat with, walks up to me and gives a toothy grin, sharing that piece of very disturbing thought.

        "Gross. That's disgusting." I gag.

"Not really." She shrugs. She was weird but it was one of the things I'd come to love about her. "So...how was your weekend?"

"Well––" I drawl, scrunching up my face.

"Oh My God! My weekend was like so dope 'cos like my mom was going to take me to my cousins and they're like so fun and crazy––"

I immediately zone out after that, nodding to every piece of information she gives, but not paying attention to an ounce of it.

I balance myself on to the chair in a corner at the back seat, swiftly placing my legs above each other on the table before me. History was my absolute favourite.

The American history is actually something quite fascinating. The war, the way every little piece of information wants to stay hidden but can't. It's really interesting.

"Looking to disturb this class today?" River comments, giving my legs a slight push before grabbing the seat before me.

"Wouldn't you enjoy that?" I feign a smile, replying his question with another.

"Oh, definitely." He smiles at me.

River was another one of the human beings I could accept his existence in my life, we were in the habit of taunting each other every five seconds and that might seem like a really bad thing to some people but we were the closest of friends when carefully observed.

"I wasn't even expecting you in school today." He remarks.

        "Why? Because Mondays are boring?"

"No. Because I figured you'd have probably wasted yourself over the weekend and gotten such a huge hangover that––"

"I don't drink Riv." I cut him off.

"Oh yeah, that I forgot." He says, flicking his index finger at me. Sometimes, he speaks differently from others and some people might take it as something abnormal or creepy but I found it cute.

"Three years of friendship and you still can't remember I don't have a thing for alcohol. Such a good friend you are." I remark sarcastically.

"Oh thank you. It takes a lot of time and energy to be such an awesome friend." He joins in on my humour and I snort, watching the teacher walk in.

                             ×××

"Riv?" Kat pokes River on his covered torso and that derives nothing but a slight reaction from him, his eyes not leaving his phone.

      "Mm?"

"Eyes on me Riv." Kat goes on.

His eyes doesn't move and I swipe the phone out of his hand. His actions are rapid as he jumps at me to retrieve it.

I hold the phone over my bowl of soup and smirk at him.

"Sit your ass down or I drop it." I threaten.

"You wouldn't dare." He bites back and I lower it.

       "That sounded like a dare–"

"Stop Raven! Please!" He panics and I laugh, tossing him the phone, which he struggles to catch.

His attention immediately goes to Kat and I smile watching them talk while I grab a bite from my sandwich.

Sometimes, peace comes from being with the two manageably good humans on planet earth.

The principal's speaker suddenly comes on with a crackling sound which causes almost everyone in the cafeteria to place their hands over their ears. They've had that problem since...forever!

"Ravenna Black? Ravenna Black to the principal's office." She repeats and both Kat and River's head jerk towards my direction.

"What havoc did you wreak this time?" Riv is quick to ask.

"Well, let's see." I sigh, grabbing my small bag, making my way out of the cafeteria.

I immediately snarl at the sight before me when I get to the office. My dad. Just when I thought I couldn't be pushed anymore than I already was by him.

"What are you doing here?" I growl.

"Just came to get you." He grins.

"I can get home myself." I snap.

He inserts his hands into his pockets and I switch glances between him and the principal.

"Your dad is taking you out of East High." The bald man, who I've known to be my principal since forever says and I stare at him in disbelief.

I angrily shove my dad but it doesn't seem to budge him. "I said I didn't want to change schools!"

"You'll thank me for this." He blatantly says.

I scream in frustration, hitting at the trophy case in the office. "Go burn in a fire."

I turn on my heels and standing there is Kat and River. They watch me with wide eyes and disbelief and it gets me even more infuriated than I already am. I exhale, brushing against them while I make my exit from the school.
