Disappointed at the turn of events and with a hope to reduce the guilt of her father, Parisa said, “Papa, she is a journalist. She connected the dots really well and it was she who asked to me to talk to you because she could not see bhaiya suffering.”

Turning towards Adhyayan, she continued, “And bhaiya, I know Papa spoke something which was not meant to be spoken but now I want you to keep aside the differences for once”.

Adhyayan sighed as he said, “So, Papa do you like her?” with a smile on his face. He was too shocked to react. He was bit disappointed in himself and his father but at the same time, he knew he wanted a family.

As his father looked at him with shock and guilt, Adhyayan said, “I want you all. It is been long that we are together as a family and I want to cherish it. Papa, you tried to protect our reputation and most important you were not aware that I am dating Anvesha.”

Gulping a sip of water, he continued, “If someone from media would have released the information about our family, media would have made their own speculations and my cookery show and your defence editorials would have been at stake. Then I would have blamed you.”

Mr. Hariprakash Joshi just smiled as he apologized while Adhyayan reiterated the same question this time directing it to his mother, “So, Mummy do you like her?”

“I am afraid she is too gorgeous for you”, his mother said smiling sheepishly to which he answered, “Am I not too handsome for her?” and the grim atmosphere in the room was finally lightened.

Mr. Hariprakash Joshi, being an experienced man said, “Adhyayan, a relationship is not a bed of roses, rather it is a garden full of roses. You will have lots of happy moments like the fresh rose petals but at the same time, you will get a plethora of sour memories like thorns of a rose stem.”

As his son listened to him keenly, taking a deep breath he continued, “You will have to cherish the pleasant moments and strive hard to replace them with sour ones. Neither a relationship is perfect nor two individuals. Both of you will have to maintain a balance, and adjust a little to complement each other.”

Adhyayan nodded in affirmation but was shocked when his father said, “Anvesha is a good girl, Adhyayan, but is she compatible? I mean being brought up in completely different geographical zones, you both are ought to have cultural differences. Actually, she told me that her family belongs to Darjeeling. Can you cope with all of this?”

Adhyayan was beyond angry. He had not expected such a conservative response from his father. He sighed as he realized that his father was just preaching him.

Wiping non-existent sweat from his forehead, Adhyayan sighed infuriatedly as he said, “You know I make my choices myself. She is the one because of whom I came back. Actually she was stupid to think about reuniting the Joshis.”

Enraged, Adhyayan asked his mother, “Mummy, this man fought with you because you were speaking to your son. Is he compatible for you? Does he complement you? Has he replaced your painful memories?” while his father’s head was hung in shame.

Lakshmi was also exasperated at her husband’s response. With a sarcastic smile, she said, “Adhyayan, actually he is telling you that you should not make the mistakes, he did himself. You know despite being far away from us, you were there in our hearts but he will not understand”.

Looking at her husband who was flabbergasted at his wife’s words, Lakshmi said glaring at him, “You know what, same culture does not define values and morals. Why does community and culture even matter? Where are your thoughts about global culture and those dialogues about being united?” With disgust on her face, Lakshmi was truly disappointed in her husband.

“She is an amazing girl and I am happy for my son. She thought for us, our family despite she had no relation with any of us except Adhyayan. They will adjust in their lives. They are mature individuals and they are better than us, Hari.” Adhyayan’s mother said looking at her husband with despair on her face.

“You need not teach them”, Lakshmi said angrily emphasizing on each and every word.

Regretting to have made another mistake, Mr. Hariprakash Joshi sighed in defeat as he said, “If you both can adjust and bridge the gap of different cultures, then it is okay. We can meet them and you both can get married.”

“Firstly, we live in a secular, diverse India. We both love each other and we can surely manage our lives. Secondly, as far as culture is concerned, our rituals and traditions were made to make us happy. Our traditions bring us together instead of creating gaps. All the traditions teach us to spread happiness, positivity and be compassionate. We can of course, modify our rituals for our happiness. Thirdly, there is nothing love can’t conquer except of your mentality.” Adhyayan spoke angrily to his father as he got up to leave the room when his sister held his hand and stopped him gesturing him to sit.

Parisa spoke finally, “Papa, I should not speak but I have to. You know Mr. Mehta also did not belong to our community yet you had no issues with his daughter because that sly man was your friend.”

Her father was offended when his daughter spoke against him but Parisa had lot more to say. Taking a deep breath, Parisa continued, “Let me tell you, in sixteen years of my existence, I have seen how traditions got modified in my family as per your convenience. They both can also do the same and stay happy. Little difference in the rituals is never a problem and there is no large difference in the cultures. Just because bhaiya and his girlfriend belong to different communities, you cannot bring your own personal bias.”

“Okay, I am sorry”, the old man mumbled trying not to meet eyes of everyone present in the room.

“You will meet her parents and we will get engaged as of now. Don’t pester us about marriage, we are simply not ready yet and I don’t want any arguments.” Adhyayan said authoritatively while his mother smiled assuring him that she would support him this time.

“You are twenty seven”, Mr. Hariprakash Joshi spoke again and immediately regretted his words when Adhyayan retorted, “Where were you when I turned twenty two and why do you care? What if I was already married? You are my father, Papa but remember, I never gave you the right to dictate my life.”

“I will support you whatever you do but please take care of yourself”, the old man said as he sighed in defeat. He realized his son was indeed, saying the truth.

Adhyayan, on the other hand, wanted to retort back but realized it was just fruitless to argue with his father. Looking at his sister, he said, “Let’s go for a long drive”, as the siblings smiled reminiscing their old days.
