Adhyayan was beyond angry. He tried calling Anvesha again and again but his girlfriend, who was herself in a trance did not receive the call and switched her phone off. He was shocked as he wondered what went wrong. As far as he remembered, he had proposed his lovely girlfriend to get married while never in his dreams could he think of the incomprehensible response from Anvesha’s side.

Anvesha could sense her dreams shattering in a second with the word ‘marriage’. Sitting inside the cab with her brother, she instructed the driver to drop her at the Film City, Noida first and then drop her brother at her housing society.

She wondered she was just twenty five and not ready to get married when an inner voice mocked her, “You will be soon turning twenty six next week”.

But I am still a kid. I cannot handle any responsibilities that come with marriage”, she thought as she mentally answered her inner conscience.

“Says the girl who is staying all alone by herself since the age of seventeen”, Her inner voice retorted to Anvesha as it tried to convince herself that she was marrying Adhyayan would not be a wrong decision. Anvesha just scoffed as she convinced herself that she was not ready to get married.

Anvesha had left her home and family after completing her school from Darjeeling. She had completed her graduation from Kolkata and then, at the age of twenty, she had got an internship with 100TV. That's how she landed up in Delhi by the age of twenty one with a permanent position at 100TV as the management absorbed her amongst the other interns in the company.

Though, somewhere Anvesha’s heart craved to spend her lifetime with Adhyayan and marriage was indeed, the best option because live-in relationship was not an option for her. It was not that she dismayed the people who moved in with their partners before marriage but she could not muster courage to do that herself. Notably, somewhere in her heart, she knew Adhyayan would also not plan of doing something like that. Being brought up with traditional values, both of them could not come along with the idea of staying together under the same roof before marriage.

Her trance of thoughts were broken when Hruday enquired her what was she thinking about. She nodded negatively mumbling a ‘nothing’ as she cheered up herself and began talking about her brother’s business and her family back in Darjeeling. She was surely missing her hometown.

Hruday, being an elder brother, could sense the discomfort in Anvesha’s voice as he noticed her pale eyes however, he did not pester about anything. He felt happy when Anvesha told him about the success of his idea and reunion of Adhyayan’s family.

Adhyayan, on the other hand, went mad when he realized Anvesha was avoiding him. Enraged, he shouted at few of his employees leaving everyone shocked. The poor, helpless employees were used to the arrogant nature of their boss so they tried to do their work meticulously. Getting frustrated, he got back to his work stealing glancing at his phone every now and then continuously waiting for a text message or call from Anvesha.

It was quarter to three, when Anvesha reached her office and bade a ‘goodbye’ to her brother switching her phone on. She was startled to see few messages of Adhyayan and her eyes got struck at,

Why, Anvesha? What happened?

Taking a deep breath as Anvesha mustered courage to answer back. Sitting in her cabin, her heartbeats raced as her hands trembled fearing the action of Adhyayan as she wrote,

I need time. I am looking forward to a relationship with you but I cannot get married now. I am simply not ready to embrace the responsibilities that come with marriage. I am just 25 and idea of ‘marriage’ scares me. I just need some time.

Hitting the ‘send’ button, she hid her face in her palms contemplating the response from him. Somewhere, she felt that he would understand but she was also afraid of losing him at the same time.

Adhyayan, who was engrossed in experimenting with a new dish, kept the different variety of lasagna with new set of sour and spicy flavors catering to the Indian taste buds in the oven as he sighed. He always cooked to relax himself whenever he was angry, confused and frustrated primarily, to stop howling at his fellow workers. Surprisingly, the dishes cooked by him in a sour mood turned out to be lip-smacking. He enjoyed his constant journey of discovering new dishes for his cookery show.

He scowled as his phone beeped but was literally shocked to read the message by Anvesha. He wondered what got into him that he turned so angry and frustrated. He immediately called her.

Disheartened to not receive any reply, Anvesha sighed as she got back to work but was taken aback by the ringtone of her phone. Quickly receiving the call, she held her phone in trembling hands but could not muster courage to speak.

Adhyayan smiled as he spoke in a cheerful voice, “When I asked you to get married, trust me, I did not ask to marry over the weekend, girl”, scratching the back of his neck.

His light-hearted comment brought smile on her face as her glossy eyes beamed with happiness. Back to her usual self, she questioned, “So?”

“What ‘so’?” Adhyayan exclaimed as he continued, “You need time and I am happy to give that to you.”

Taking a deep breath, he cleared his point of view wisely choosing his words, as he said, “I can wait for a year or two only after we get formally engaged in the presence of our families”.

Anvesha nodded smilingly as she wiped beads of her sweat from her forehead and some unshed tears from her eyes while Adhyayan frowned as he received no response.

He wondered what was wrong with the girl whom he was dating. Normally girls tend to run behind the boys to get married while in a relationship and here, Anvesha wants a lifetime for the so-called ‘time’, Adhyayan thought but decided to keep quiet. It was Anvesha’s call to take the decision and speak up, after all, he realized and decided to keep shut.

Realizing the fact that she was talking to him over phone and Adhyayan could not see her, Anvesha smiled heartily as she said, “This sounds okay. After exchanging the rings, I will try getting accustomed to the idea of getting married. Thank you.”

Adhyayan’s face shone with happiness as he decided to talk with their parents. He smiled as he mumbled, “I love you”, wiping the sweat from his forehead. The oven of his restaurant’s kitchen beeped gesturing the dish was ready.

Before Anvesha could answer, she was taken aback by the commotion in her cabin as her best friends, Nitin and Neha barged into her office. She giggled as she blushed and said, “Me too”, quickly disconnecting the conversation.

Adhyayan just smiled goofily as he imagined her flushed state among her colleagues and got back to his work. Anvesha, on the other hand, was teased by her friends before the trio got back to their work.
