Dreaming of lilies was interpreted to be bringing blessings from the Goddess of fertility Hera, Kate had heard that somewhere. But that was based on Greek mythology. In Christian legend, however, it was connected to Eve's tears. Intriguingly, ancient Romans used to place a lily in the hands of the deceased when they were buried. So, it was fairly unclear what exactly her dream of being surrounded by strikingly white lilies meant last night.

Or it could be just the fact that it was her favorite flower—now that should be reason enough for her to be dreaming of it.

But her conclusive theory was proved wrong just hours later when she sat before the gynecologist on a bimonthly visit and was rendered the news she wasn't really prepared for. It was unexpected, what the doctor revealed to her, but nevertheless filled her heart with interminable joy. It hit her with the invigorating force of a comet.

"You're one week along, Mrs. Leon. Congratulations."

It wasn't like she was lifeless before, but this—this seemed to have made her feel more alive than ever.

She looked at the time on her wristwatch. There were still a couple more hours left for Alex to come home. So, she decided to go to her most favorite spot—the cherry blossom tree behind the centuries old Shinto shrine at the heart of downtown South-hills.

"Thanks, Kyle," getting out of the brilliant blue town car, she smiled at the head of Alex's security team—appointed to her after they got married. Getting growingly protective of her, Alex took some steps that seemed quite unnecessary to her. Yet to keep his heart, she raised inadequate protests.

As she walked closer to the tree, she was surprised for the second time that day. The cherry blossom tree had some buds coming out, peeking towards the skies from between the leaves. It was phenomenal as the tree was said to be infertile locally. No one had seen any flowers on it for ages. And yet it was going to bloom cherry blossoms soon. For a while, Kate stood there—looking up at the tree, eyes sparkling with exhilaration, mouth agape in astonishment. She thought that perhaps the tree had bonded with her over the many times she had come to sit on the tree ring.

A smile stretched on her lips. As her bangs quivered as the soothing wind touched them, the mole on her forehead revealed—one of her physical traits that Alex never got tired to say how much he loved.

Just like she had many times, she sat down on the stone ring that surrounded the tree. She brought out her notebook—more than half of its pages filled with the story she had been writing for so long now. Inspired mostly by her own emotions, the story always followed the tune of her heart. But this evening, she couldn't write a word. Leaning back on the tree bark she held the notebook open on her lap and stared at the blank pages. She found tears trailing down her face, accompanying the smile she had on her face. The blank page was drenched by her tears. The unbearably sweetish ache in her heart found its way into her notebook.

As the sun began to set, Kate could barely contain herself on her way back home. Sitting in the backseat of the car, she felt on the edge of blasting out of sheer joy. To have another soul inside of her body was the kind of feeling that couldn't be explained with mere words—she realized. And she wished nothing more than to share this realization with Alex.

Seeing Alex's car already parked in the driveway, she walked faster. Her long curly hair bounced around her shoulders.

Only for the briefest moment she paused at the front doors and gripped the test reports tightly to her chest. Inside the report was confirmed that she was going to be a mother—that she was expecting their first child. She and Alex were going to be parents very soon.

She recalled how Alex always used to say how lucky they were to have obtained everything they'd ever desired without much difficulty and by fast interventions of fate.

Sure, they hated one another's guts initially—during the days Kate had just joined Quartz—Alex's company. But after a fated meeting on the balcony, a fated kiss in the dark, and after identifying and getting to know one another in a span of very little time, any negative feelings they had for each other soon evaporated. They got married soon after. Their relationship was pleasant to the point they never had to suffer any more-than-minor arguments, and even those occasions were scarce.

They were married for nearly six months now and people who came to know the lack of regular arguments in their relationship would either feel jealous or just didn't choose to believe them.

She had always believed herself to be fortunate that her happily ever after was handed out to her so effortlessly.

And now, to that perfection was going to be included another joyous addition—a child. Their child.

Smiling to herself, Kate wiped beneath her eye where a warm tear had just managed to slip out.

Not being able to hold back her excitement she sprinted up the staircase. The short journey upstairs felt too long.

She knew she would see the same excitement in Alex's eyes, too, after telling him the good news that was sure to mark a new phase in their life. She could not wait.

With her heart beating hard and fast, Kate came to a halting stop in front of their bedroom door. Hesitating only for a small second, she opened the door which made the squealing noise she'd gotten used to hearing every time.

She walked in hurriedly.

There, Alex's tall frame stood at the window—his back facing her.

"Alex," Kate called out—smile on her mouth, thrill in her tone.

For some reason, the air was tense in the room, almost to the point that it seemed suffocating and despite the fact that fresh wind evidently was hurling in through the open window as leaves of the ever-familiar oak branch outside quivered in synchronization with the drapes.

She inched forward noticing that his broad shoulders were stiffer than usual. He stood with his back straight, making his already noteworthy tall frame seem towering in an alarming manner. The lengths of his arms were as rigid as his entire form, with shirt-sleeves carelessly rolled up to the elbows the corded muscles on his arms kept on display.

Slowly, Alex turned around and Kate stopped in midway.

Something seemed wrong, incredibly wrong.

His eyes glistened with fury.

His face looked wild.

But Kate chose to ignore all that. After all, the good news she was going to deliver would make all the gone wrong things right.

She walked up to him, now feeling a little nervous.

"Alex," She proceeded to divulge anyway. "I've something incredible to tell you, I'm—"

"Why?" But she was interjected rudely. "Why did you do this to me, Kate? Why?"

A confused frown marred her forehead. "What are you talking about? I don't understand—"

"No, Kate," Alex shook his head. "I'm the one who doesn't understand." The edges around his eyes were increasingly reddening with growing fury and what looked like suppressed hurt. "I'm the one who's been kept in dark this whole time. Tell me, Kate, what was less in my love? Why did you do this to me?"

Her confusion multiplied looking at the unrefined fury in his eyes, the seriousness and finality in his features. "I seriously am clueless here, Alex. What is it that I've done?" she asked. "Tell me."

"This." he threw some photos her way.

Shaken by Alex's behavior Kate snapped her face back as some of the photos slapped across her cheek. They crawled down in the air to slowly settle around her feet.

He looked away from her like she had burned him. And Kate couldn't help but feel her insides tremor. Instincts screamed at her that a storm had indeed entered her life with the intent to harm the love that she and Alex shared.

Bending down slowly, she reached out with trembling hands; she picked up one of the photos from the floor and froze. In the photo, Neil, her best friend, and she were making out. Kate remembered this moment but it was nothing like this. All the photos were cleverly taken from wrong angles and some were for sure morphed, however, that was done with such excellence that even Kate herself was amused at how real they looked.

Lifting her eyes from the photo where she had apparently locked lips with Neil, Kate looked back up into Alex's eyes and got scared out of her wits. The eyes where used to be only love and affection for her, there, those emotions were now replaced with endless hatred only.

And she knew, the perfection of their relationship, of the love that they used to boast upon was surely fated to face a test. A test they were meant to fail in that instant.

A/N:

I wrote this story a long time ago and it was my first attempt to write something emotional. And maybe that's why it holds a special place in my heart. Right now, I'm rewriting this story. The whole plot, dialogue style, and some scenes and maybe characters as well are going to be transformed more or less as I write. Especially the end of this story in the old version is going to be altered in this new version, totally.

If you don't like my writing, please don't act rude, there's a difference between constructive criticism and being simply cruel or rude.

And if you enjoy the story, please don't forget to vote, comment, and share! That would make me extremely happy. I really adore every vote I get and your views are so... very precious to me. Keep them coming.

Readers, who've already read this story (the old version), raise your hands, please... :D I want to see you guys and listen from you.

New readers, my question to you all is, did you enjoy reading the prologue? It's going to be a lake of tears - this story. Are you ready for it?
