^^Lara

I was currently in the library as I tried to find anything on capturing a soul. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, I've found nothing. I left Zena late last night even though she wanted me to stay. She even suggested missing a day of school, but I couldn't allow that. Zena then said that next week there would be a house competition or something (similar to field day in America I guess) and parents would come to watch and maybe participate. Anyways, she wanted to know if we could attend as well. I told her that Lara is a little busy, but saw her cute face fall, so I told her that I'd see what I could do. And that brightened her face. So now I have to see how the hell I'm gonna get my busy wife, who loves fashion and anything glamorous, to attend an outdoor exercise competition. Easy, right?

I closed the book and stretched. A butler saw and smiled at me before pouring tea. I gave him a grateful smile before staring at my files on Geneve. I've been at that for 2hrs before taking a break to look into Kiki, which was an additional hour. Maybe I'll take a light break before diving back into the Geneve case. I also really miss my wife, so I'll head up there.

The guards smiled and opened her door. Lara's head was on the table as she attempted to ignore what the person on the phone was saying. She glanced up when I entered, which seemed to invigorate her. But I guess she heard what the other person was saying since she groaned and began to speak back, but in an annoyed tone.

Lara rolled her eyes as she tried to make rebuttals. I know I should leave her be, but I really miss her. And just being in her presence makes me feel content. I was glancing around the room and noticed, under a pile of papers, the familiar document. My eyes flitted to Lara who was, at this point, shouting at the person. I really wanted to look at the document, but knew I wouldn't be able to with her in the room.

"Larz?" She looked at me. "Walk and talk. It'll help to calm you down."

Lara debated for a moment before standing up. She gave me a kiss and a grateful smile before leaving the room. I could hear her voice as her steps retreated. I wasted no time in moving to her neat desk. I removed the file and began to flip through it.

My eyes furrowed the more I read. The document was in French, but that wasn't surprising since we lived in France. Plus, I was fluent in the language so I had no qualms. What confused me was the style of writing. It was very old French and almost ancient like. I flipped through some pages and saw the familiar word: sang familial. I then saw the sealing wax on the document and realized it was from a council. There's a vampire council? Since when?

I flipped through more pages and tried to make understanding of sang familial but I couldn't. I barely even got to read since-

"What are you doing?" I turned to see Lara with a confused look.

"Was bored and going through your files." I forced myself to appear casual since I didn't want my heartbeat to give away anything. "What's this?" I pointed at the symbol, but her expression was stern.

"The vampire council." She said after a moment. Lara approached me and gently took the file. She forced a smile at me and gave me a teasing look. "Very boring stuff that's making my head explode." She chuckled.

"What's sang familial?" I saw her flinch so subtly that someone who's not well trained would miss it.

"Family blood." Lara stated the obvious translation. "I barely pay attention as is. You don't need to bore yourself with this stuff." She wrapped her arms around me and kissed my neck.

I noticed her subtly place the file in her desk drawer since she thought my eyes were closed as she sucked on my neck. What is she hiding? I decided to play her game and act like I didn't see. I grabbed her face and deepened the kiss.

"Oh, before I forget." I pulled back and chuckled when she whined. "Zena's school has an event next week and she was wondering if we could attend."

"Oh, let me see my schedule." She unwrapped herself from me and moved to a planner.

I subtly peeked at the dresser and noticed a biometric lock. What the fuck?! What are you hiding that you want to keep me out?! Lara turned back to me, so I fixed my expression. She had a guilty look on her face and that's when I knew.

"She'll under-"

"No, she won't." Lara scoffed. "It's irritating me that I can't be there for her or you." I arched a brow at her words. "I can't give you the attention you deserve. You go hours and even days without seeing me if not you don't come to my office. You're insanely bored and I don't have the time to occupy you."

"You're the Queen and have duties... you're an amazing ruler." She scoffed at my words. "You have a natural knack for-"

"Please don't finish that." She solemnly looked down.

"Why not?" I was confused.

"I don't want anything to be like him." She bit back tears. "I was desperately trying to be horrendous at this job, but... if I'm good then he was right. That I'm a natural and born leader. I don't want to be like him at all!"

"Lara." I cupped her face. "Your father was a horrible man and you're nothing like his dark and twisted ways. That being said, he had qualities that made him an effective leader. You were taught those qualities but are molding them in a way to make you a good leader and not a feared one. You're a better version of your father."

"Thanks, I needed to hear that." Lara wiped a tear. "It's just that everything seems organic and natural and I hate it. I was born and bred for this and... I don't want this life though. I want to be 100% devoted to you. I don't want to feel like I'm neglecting you since I need to constantly work to maintain order amongst the vampires. And...I don't know. Miss things that my daughter wants or not being there for her." Lara sighed.

"You're not deliberately forgetting things." I rubbed her back.

"Forgetting?" She was confused, making my eyes winded and me clear my throat. "What'd I forget about... Kiki." Her eyes widened while I sighed. "Fuck. We were supposed to... omg. She must... I really let her down. She's probably been researching and going down the wrong and most common mistakes and-"

"I offered to help and-"

"It's not the same, Mila. I promised to help her and I'm not fulfilling my word. I feel awful." Lara ran a hand through her hair. "I-"

"Your majesty." The door opened. "Your meeting." Lara nodded and motioned for him to leave us.

"We can talk later." I smiled and kissed her before leaving.

X

It's been a couple days and I haven't made any progress on either cases. I've also not had my much needed Lara time. She's become busier than before if that's possible. It just sucks that I don't have her arms around me, whispering sweet nothings in my ear. I've barely even been able to have a conversation with her since she's either needed or has to leave for a meeting.

I know it's killing her too. The Lara I know longs to be in my embrace or just lounge around with me. Now, she has pressing responsibilities that'd make a normal person crack, but she's beyond normal. I turned in our bed and sadly touched her pillow.

I felt even sadder at feeling the temperature difference. The pillow was quite cold, meaning that Lara was recently on it. She had been in her recently to probably just be in my presence. My guess is that she got called back, so she couldn't spend that much time. And the sad part was that the only time she could spare a few minutes was when I was asleep. I sighed before getting up.

I did my routine before heading to her office. Like usual, the guards smiled before opening the doors. Lara had a pen in hand while speaking to someone via her computer. Her eyes smiled at me before focusing back on her screen. I occupied myself by playing with different objects in her room. Finally, she ended the call.

"Hello, my love. How are you-"

"How did Sophie do it?" I interrupted her.

"Huh?"

"Alec." I placed the small globe down. "He had to be King and was obviously busy, so how did Sophie manage? How did she find time to spend with him?" I sat in front of her and observed her guilty expression. "I don't mean it that way. What I'm trying to say is that I feel like I've been putting pressure on you to spend time, but maybe I should also take the initiative in making us spend time together."

"She'd often spend days cooped up in the office with him. She'd just sit and do her own thing while he worked, so that they could be in each other's presence. She'd tag along and travel to different locations with him when he had meetings or other royal duties." Lara paused to think.

"Maybe I should do that too. Take more of an interest in your work and... I don't know. Try and help." She sweetly smiled at my words. "There's just so much on your plate and I don't understand how you're supposed to accomplish it all. There's not that many hours in a day to get through everything here."

"That's why we don't sleep." Lara chuckled, but I felt sorry for her. "How are you doing? Enjoying the new gaming system?"

I chuckled as I thought about the rv headset a staffer had surprised me with. The boy looked about 18 and super excited to show me. He had geeked out about it so much that I invited him to play with me. The boy was shaking in excitement and immediately accepted.

"Yes and thank you." I smiled while she blushed.

"I'm happy you're enj-"

"Your majesty. Another meeting." An advisor opened the door while Lara groaned. "And it's important." He seriously spoke while Lara's eyes narrowed.

"Tell them I'll be there soon." The advisor bowed before leaving.

"Who are your important guests?" I teased.

"The vampire council." She spoke while my breath hitched. "Don't worry. Everything will be fine." She kissed me. "I love you."

"Love you more." I smiled.

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

"N-" She smiled when I interrupted her with a kiss. "And don't worry. I'll keep myself busy." She sadly stepped back. "Go. Your guests are waiting for you."

Lara acted like it physically pained her to leave me. I totally understood since we haven't spent much time together and she was finally in my presence, but she still had to leave. I had to shove Lara out the doors before she actually left. I sighed and turned around to face her desk. My curiosity nagged me about accessing the file that she locked away in her desk. Before I could make a move to it, my phone buzzed.

I scrunched my brows at Matt's words: Busy?

Wonder what Lara is hiding. And what does Matt want???
