Althea

I woke up the next morning to Nate snoring, I giggled, and snuggled closer to him, he radiated heat and calmed me, I  looked up, and saw his peaceful face, this was the only time that he was vulnerable and helpless. I smiled and sighed, getting out of bed, I realised that it was cold, I looked through his closet and got his oversized blouse.

I walked out into his kitchen, and tried to be as quiet as possible, I gently placed the pan on the stove, and turned on the gas, I looked for food in his fridge, and he only had eggs, apple, and bread. I sighed knowing I couldn't make a good breakfast. I got all three foods out.

I cracked the eggs against the kitchen island, and opened the crack above the pan, the yolk and egg white dripping out, and plopping onto the pan, sizzling, I cracked another egg, and repeated my previous steps. I waited for the eggs to cook, and I cut up the apples, placing them on a plate. I got out the bread and precisely slipped the eggs on each bread for each of us to eat.

I poured tap water into two cups and set them on the table, as I was wiping my hands, I saw a very sleepy Nate come out, rubbing his puffy face, he looked shock, as he saw the food on the table, "you really need to stock up your fridge" I chuckled, and sat down.

Nate was still sleepy, he sat down, "I mean I only moved here a couple of days ago" he mumbled, I looked down blushing, "let's eat" I said, and started to eat.

We finished eating, and I placed our dishes in the sink, I walked up to Nate who was in his room, "you have an extra tooth brush?" I asked, he looked at me and nodded, "I'll have it ready for you" his deep voice came out. I smiled , and started to make the bed.

I blushed, reminiscing over what happened last night, I felt bad, but he helped me fall back asleep, and I'm grateful. Once the bed was clean, and tidy, I hopped out of his clothes, and wore my previous day clothes, I went into his nice, black tile, bathroom, and washed my face and teeth. I'm really thankful that he has provided me with such, hospitality.

Once I was finished with my routine, I texted my mum saying I will be back home, but she said to stop by a pharmacy to buy some medicine for her. So she really wasn't feeling well after all, I worry about her health. She hadn't stopped working after my father left, she didn't take care of herself. I sighed and looked for Nate to bid my goodbye.

I stopped at the hallway, when he was fixing something in the shelf, "Nate?" I said, he jumped a little, and turned around, shocked and nervous he moved away from the shelf, I shook off his nervousness, and smiled.

"Thank you for comforting me last night, I needed it" I swayed my shoulders, Nate looked awfully anxious, he laughed and shrugged his shoulders, "no worries", he mumbled. I stepped closer to him, and he stepped forward too, "I should go, my mothers waiting" I softly said.

"Bye" Nate replied, I looked up, and waved, I left his apartment, and walked to the elevator, as the bell dinged, the doors opened, a tall man who was about in his mid twenties came out, flashing me a smile, I smiled back and got in, the tall man walked to Nate's door, I couldn't see anything else as the doors closed.

My walk back home was different, I felt happy and refreshed, I stopped by the pharmacy to buy some medicine, I walked into my home, being hit with a wave of disgust, I looked around and there was a trail of blood, leading up to the stairs, I followed, being careful not the make any sound.

The blood led, to the bathroom, where I heard my mother throwing up, I dropped everything, and ran to her, pulling her hair back, and patting her back, she let everything out, my face dropped when I saw papers on the floor, I picked them up and examined them.

My stomach dropped beating when I saw the three most feared words.

Positive for cancer.

I dropped the papers and looked at my mother, tearing up, I collapsed on the bathroom floor, I already lost my dad, I can't loose her. I thought.

"I'm s-sorry, I didnt t-tell you" my mother tried to talk, her voice was hoarse and cracked, I smiled and shook my head, I didn't want to make the situation worse, I mean who would. Anyone in my position would be crying their eyeballs out. As much as I didn't want to cry, I sucked it all up, feeling the familiar lump in my throat, I didn't cry. Instead I went over to my mother and cooed.

"It's okay, you've been working, and I understand that, but I think we should take a break, okay?" I said, and stroked her greying hair. She's been in too much stress at work. After moments of crying and cleaning up blood, I rested my mother in bed, and decided to call Dr Gibson, he must've known about this.

The line ringed.

"Hello?" Gibson spoke.

"H-Hey, it's Thea, you knew about my mother? So why didn't you tell me?" I said almost raising my voice, Gibson sighed.

"I was going to tell you, but it wasn't my place to, Ive spoken with the rest of the doctors, and they said to get your mother hospitalised, Thea I'm sorry, but your mother is in great danger right now" Gibson's voice was low. I sighed, and nodded.

"Alright, can you come pick us up, I'll be waiting, she's in bed right now" I asked, and looked at my mothers sleeping state, "Alright, I'll be there" Gibson hung up, and I packed a bag, in case if my mother needed anything.

Today, I've come to my senses, that the only person that's important is my mother, I'll work every job if her cancer gets worse, but now, all I need is her to be strong and healthy.

Just us.
