Rue

"What is this place?" I asked as we entered some abandoned building.

"It's an abandoned building. I can't take you to my home because of everything that's going on so I contacted Samuel to meet us here after he finished talking to my father ."

"Why here though?" I asked. "This is honestly so dramatic."

We literally could've stayed in the car and talked.

"Yeah well, I just want to make sure no ears are on us."

"Where do you even live anyway." I realized he's never talked with me about certain things like where he lives and how he lives.

"In an abandoned mansion that's somewhat out of town, it's not the best home but it's suitable for the amount of people living there."

"How many people live there?" I asked. "Are they all vampires?"

He nodded his head. "A lot of newcomers who haven't turned Feral yet, also some house members and most of the council and police force."

"Oh."

Silence crowded the small room we were walking through and it began feeling a little awkward.

"You're not gonna kiss me again aren't you."

Immediately felt myself regretting saying that as soon as it came out. My cheeks started to get hot and things felt awkward.

He stopped in his tracks and turned around and smirked at me. "No."

"Good. Cause I don't know what in your right mind made you think you can do that," I started babbling on. "You know I could've really hurt you in that moment because isn't that like sexual assault. I mean who goes around kissing girls they barely know. I knew the situation was a bit sticky but-,"

"Did you forget I can read minds?" He cut me off.

Aw fucking shit. I actually did forget. Does that mean when he's around me he can hear every thought that I have. Or does he only read my mind depending on the situation?

"I don't read it all the time. Don't worry." He turned on his heel and continued walking.

A few minutes later we reached a room. There was some guy sitting in a chair focused on something. His eyes were glowing.

That glow resembled something. It resembled that night where they tried to wipe my memories away.

It took me a bit to realize this was the guy who was the cause of it the first time and the cause of my nightmares the second time.

After he did whatever he did, my life has seemingly changed.

Or maybe I'm paranoid.

No. I'm not.

"Samuel." Jason announced our arrival.

Samuels eyes slowly stopped glowing as he looked up at us.

He watched me for a time that made me uncomfortable. I started rocking back and forth and awkwardly looking around.

"Beautiful." He whistled. "Better than Hayley may I add."

Who's Hayley? I already felt myself getting jealous by the mention of her name, but I played it off really well.

"We're not here just so you can flirt with her." Jason smacked him in his head. "There's just so many questions I have that she needs to be present for. I have a theory. A shocking one."

He pointed to one chair that sat across from him.

I looked around to see if there was any other chair in the room, but there wasn't.

Jason looked at me and jerked his head towards the seat.

"You can sit."

"No, you can sit, I don't mind standing." I lied.

I really wanted to sit, but this is me being polite.

"I'm not sitting if you're going to be standing."

You know what. If he's just going to keep persisting, I might as well sit.

"You look stressed." Samuel said to me. "What happened?"

I looked at Jason for reassurance and he nodded his head telling me that it's okay to speak to him.

"I've been having nightmares after you tried to wipe away my memories for the second time-,"

I explained the drowning situation and he listened profoundly. I told him that I got hit by a feral, passed out, saw a dude, told him about The Inbetween that I was supposedly in, recalled a small part of the conversation. Long story short, I told him everything.

He seemed like he knew something.

"What do you know?" I asked getting confident.

I leaned forward in my seat and watched his body language.

"Based on what you said you're not of this world." He began focusing on something. "We've got your blood tested a while ago by a Dr of ours, but the blood we took from you was manipulated with. It's like someone knew about what we were doing. That's why I've been focusing on Dani lately. But I haven't been able to find any evidence, but then again that woman is very smart so if she's hiding something even I won't even be able to find it."

"What do you mean I'm not of this world?"

Is he trying to bullshit with me right now? Is he trying to tell me I'm an alien or something? There's literally no way.

I was born just like everyone else. My parents had sex, then I was the product of it.

"There's something deeper than that Rue. I'm pretty sure of it." Jason put a hand on my shoulder.

"Remember that conversation I said I had with your mom?" I looked towards him and noted that he had a distressed look on his face.

"Yeah?"

"Well we had a much deeper conversation than that. She told me some things that I think you should know."

Jason

I couldn't sit here and think any longer. I needed to find out why Jeff looked so familiar to me. I knew Rue was at work today and she wouldn't be back until later this afternoon. So, I used this time as the time to go talk to her mother and get some answers.

"Jason where are you going, your dumb dad wants us to go feral hunting tonight." Hunter asked as I passed his room.

"I have to go find something out, something that's been bothering me for a while." I told him.

"Okay good, because if you're not here he won't send me anywhere." Hunter sighed. "Carry on."

When I arrived at Rues home I met her mother on the front porch. She looked very anxious and scared.

"Hey Ms.Watson? Are you okay?" I didn't fully know how to approach the situation.

I also didn't want to make a bad impression and end up saying the wrong thing.

"No, I'm not okay." Her voice sounded hoarse.

She coughed and sniffled a bit before standing up.

"I'm going back inside, have a lovely day." I stopped her before she walked into the house.

"What." She whispered. "I can't have anyone seeing me like this, it's so embarrassing."

"I lived long enough to see many people cry. Trust me, it's fine." I reassured.

She wiped a few tears away

"If it's okay with you, can we talk?"

"About what."

"Jeff."

This time, her eyes softened at the mention of his name. It was different from the day before.  When I first asked about him she got upset and called him the devil. I wonder what made her change.

She allowed me to come in and I followed her to the dining room.

"Sit here." She pointed to the chair across from where she was standing. "You want a drink?"

"No thanks." I smiled.

She sat down and kept her head down as well.

"Do you know how hard it is raising two children who you are scared of ?" She immediately asked.

That caught me off guard. What does that even mean?

"Huh?"

"If I tell you, can you promise to keep it a secret from Jeff and Rue?"

She seemed to be easily opening up to me. This must've been something she was never open about with, and now that there's someone she can talk to, she's ready to tell everything.

"I promise." I knew I was already going to be breaking that promise and it bothered me a lot.

I'm not one to break promises, but when it comes to her telling me something about Rue that she doesn't know about herself I see myself eventually telling her.

"It's so blurry to me though. It won't be fully accurate."

"It's okay." I placed my hand on top of her palm.

She looked up at me, teary eyed and exhausted. Her eyes were bloodshot red.

"Well, to start, I remember dating a man when I was 18. He was much older as he told me, but he looked very young so that was a good thing for me. I always wanted an older man but I never wanted one who evidently looked old," She started to explain.

"- so, I remember falling in love with him quite instantly— in the matter of a week quite honestly. He had good mannerisms and everything I valued in a man. He told me he had a son though-Jeff- I never met him until after Rue came into the picture. She was two when I met him. He never told me where Jeff was, but when I first met him he had the mannerisms of an old man. He spoke old English. I always thought that was weird; he was apparently 13 years old and speaking like an old man." She chuckled at the memory.

"- anyway ,  let's go back, I moved a bit forward. Before becoming pregnant with Rue, my husband and I have been constantly trying to give birth to a baby. But for some reason, it never worked. I knew it wasn't me because I went to the doctor and my Doctor and he said I am completely fertile and healthy. But my husband refused to go to the Doctor. Adoption was not an option as I lost all of my family at a young age and I wanted something of my own blood. After a few tries I was blessed enough to have a successful pregnancy. But things felt weird with her. I don't know if this is normal but it felt like someone was eating my insides? I was losing a lot of blood during my pregnancy with her. During birth I swear that I died. No-I definitely died because I remember going to a place that I wasn't sure of just watching my husband freaking out. The doctors were going crazy as well. I saw all of it."

"I'm sorry I have to cut you off Ms.Watson, but can I ask, who is or was your husband?" I questioned.

Her eyes wandered around the room like she was trying to remember. I can tell she was trying hard to remember. Then I saw her eyes become glossy and I noticed a lump in her throat as she grew more stressed and overwhelmed.

"I don't remember." She sighed.

"How come?" I tried to speak as calmly and soothing as possible.

She shrugged.

"When Rue was 6, he left. It's like my memories were wiped away of him or something. I was left to take care of his two kids and I don't think they're normal. I don't want to sound crazy but Jeff, I swear I saw one time I saw fangs coming out of his mouth or something. His eyes were glowing red, and he was eating something. I don't know, I could've been on drugs." She stopped herself most likely embarrassed.

If only she knew what I was.

"No." I begged. "Keep talking. It's okay I am not judging you."

"How do I know you're telling the truth?"

"I don't know how, but I'm willing to listen to your experience. It can allow my mind to open up and consider many possibilities. I know this world isn't what it seems. Truth be told, no one believes half the things I say, but just trust me. I am not judging you."

She gave me a cautious glance before ultimately deciding to continue.

"I did some research on it and it turns out what I could've possibly seen was a vampire. Also with Rue, when she was born she had very pale skin and sharp nails. Her hair was dark too. So after their dad left and I saw Jeff , I got curious. I searched everything up. There is a possibility that my daughter isn't fully human she's a,"

"Dhampir." I cut her off.

Rue a Dhampir? But she doesn't possess the typical qualities of one. I mean yeah she's tall, extremely attractive, and i would say charismatic, but I never seen her drink blood, or have an urge to kill a vampire. I never saw any qualities of a vampire in her, nor have I sensed it.

Is this what Dani meant when she said she's a danger to our race? Does that mean when Rue figures out who she is and unlocks that side of her would she want to kill us?

No, she wouldn't. Rues not like that.

"Yes, that's what it's called but it makes no sense. She seems completely human to me. Because of this discovery, I've always been scared to show her any affection in fear that one day she might kill me. I haven't told her I loved her, I haven't given her any hugs, I know she wanders about it, and I know it deeply pains her, but she blames her father. She doesn't know the truth and it hurts every time I look at her and Jeff. Jeff doesn't even know that I know what they are."

"Let me ask you this again Ms.Watson," I looked her dead in the eyes.

"Who is their father?"

Hey guys so this might be the last chapter update until my finals are over which is about 2-3 weeks from now. As I responded to some, I need to fix chapter 23 since I really messed that chapter up. However, I don't have the time to fix it because I am and have been quite busy recently.

But thanks for 1k reads! Honestly never thought people would read this because I wrote about 10 wattpad stories before this and they've all FAILED. I also enjoy the feedback and the votes and seeing this book pop up in my notifications because of you guys makes me so ecstatic.

Anyways, thanks again!
