Jason

Jason. A familiar voice whispered to me.

Assuming it was Jeff or Francis, I ignored the voice and continued meditating.

Jason please, I don't have much time left. The voice choked out.

I furrowed my eyebrows in annoyance as I opened one of my eyes. I gasped and jumped back in shock as I noticed Samuel sitting right in front of me.

"Samuel? Am I hallucinating?" I looked around to see if Francis or Jeff was anywhere around.

Look Jason, I am locked in the basement of the house, your father is planning on executing me any day now. He drained me of most of the energy I had, so I can't fight back. I need you, come please, hurry.

"S-Samuel, wait where- what, why?" I couldn't find the right words to say.

I am riddled with guilt right now as I knew that my father was going to punish Samuel. However, with everything happening, I completely forgot about him.

Hurry. The wind whistled as his voice and visual faded away within the distance.

"Samuel." I whispered to myself.

I felt my heart tightened at the fact that I allowed him to end up like this. If I wasn't so negligent and kept my eyes open, when we rescued Rue, we could've rescued Samuel as well. He also said he was in the basement of my home. Does this mean he was there the whole time during Rues rescue.

Is he aware of what's going on? Is my home okay?

My mind began filling with many possibilities as to what's occurring in my home. Unfortunately they all were negative leaving me extremely paranoid and anxious.

There were hundreds of people living in our home. It was that big. It was a shock to know that my father got them all evacuated in time before the "mission" started, and before Hunter's transformation.

Where would they be now? Are they back at home?

No.

It's not safe. Hunter could be camping out there just waiting for someone to return so he could kill them. But if that was true wouldn't he have scoped around the whole house and discovered Samuel?

"What are you thinking about Jason?" The sudden appearance of Francis' voice caused me to jump.

"Oh god." I breathed out. "You scared me."

He was carrying what seemed like a dozen stones and branches which seemed extremely heavy. Honestly, with his small frame, you'd never expect him to be that strong, but then again, he is a vampire.

"We need to build shelter. I'm tired of sleeping on this hammock. It hurts my back." He dropped the stones and sticks in front of me which sent out a loud boom throughout the Forest.

I watched as a bird flew away before deciding to say something.

"I have something to do today." I said vaguely.

I don't want him to know about Samuel. Actually, I'm not even sure if he truly knows about the situation Samuel is in. Being that he is the first vampire I'd expect him to, but he hasn't mentioned Samuels well-being at all. I've decided on my own to return back to my home and retrieve and save Samuel. I want to avoid a huge conflict just in case my father is back home.

If I go on my own, it would minimize whatever issues could become.

"So you're telling me you're not going to help me build this den?" Francis sighed.

I slowly shook my head.

He groaned in annoyance as he plopped down next to me.

"What's going on with you? Why are you being so secretive."

He dug in his pocket and pulled out what I believe to be a cigarette. He lit the cigar and began smoking it.

"Why are you smoking that?" I questioned, pointing towards his cigar.

"It lessens my cravings." He shrugged it off. "Anyways, I asked you a question first."

"I just need some fresh air, that's all. We've been camping out here for like a day and a half. I haven't seen anyone's face, but yours. It's getting kinda annoying."

"You're calling me unattractive or something?" He began getting defensive. "You know, I was quite the looker for the thousands of years I've been alive. Ever since I was a young lad, I had ladies and even men pleading to be with me."

I rolled my eyes at his arrogance. "Very funny."

"I'm joking Jason, go do what you want. It's not my intention to keep you bordered up in here. You may be a vampire, and at a huge risk, but you're still a person." He puffed out the cigar and a cloud of smoke surrounded his face.

"Just be safe please."

I nodded my head and ran in the direction of my home.

I'm coming Samuel, I promise.

Rue

"Rue I'm getting sick of your shit." My mom shouted at me. "You're turning into Jeff! It's been a whole two days! Two days!"

"It's actually been a day and a half." I held one finger in front of my face in hopes that if she attempted to hit me, she'd hit my finger and not my face.

"I don't care if it's been two hours! You are my youngest child and I'm tired of you disappearing without contact." She yelled. "You know it's dangerous out here with all these murders going on, you really have some nerve. On top of that you dropped out of school, and haven't reported to work! ALSO I FIND LOLA SLEEPING IN JEFFS BED ?! What is this?! What is going on!"

I turned to my left taking note of the horror that was expressed on Lola's face. Her face was extremely red, while her eyes were dilated, and her forehead was shiny due to sweat. This isn't the first time my mom has yelled at a friend of mine, but I can tell that this time was different for Lola, she was genuinely fearful of her.

"Ms. Watson, I am completely at fault here. I needed a place to stay, so Rue was kind enough to open up her home to me." Lola defended herself.

"What's wrong with your home?" My mom angrily placed her hands on her hips.

If I wasn't exaggerating, I swear you can see steam radiating off of her skin, thus making her more intimidating.

"I forgot the key. I can't break into the house because I'm on lease and my landlord said I can come and retrieve a new key at.." She looked down at her watch. "1:30 and lookie here! It's 12:00. Maybe I should get ready and go."

Lola shot me a sympathetic glance before grabbing her bag and rushing out the door.

"I'll text you later." I called out.

My mom groaned in annoyance as she leaned against the wall and placed her hand on her temple.

"Rue. Why do you do this to me? I'm getting old." She sounded defeated.

"I'm sorry mom."

"Where do you even stay when you're gone overnight?"

"At a friend's house." I lied.

I found myself sleeping outside more often. I don't know why, but for some reason I began to feel more free. I don't feel as unsafe as I did before I found out who I truly was because I know I can fend for myself now. Also I don't have to fully worry about eating real food because Jeff has acquired a multitude of blood bags which last a while, and guess what, they're free and delicious!

"Okay." I can't really tell if my mom fell for my antics. It was too hard to get into her head to see how she was truly feeling.

"Well, Rue you have to help me clean up the house and make it look good. We are having guests over tonight for dinner."

I frowned at my mom in confusion and tilted my head to the side. "Guests? Since when have you had friends?"

"Rue, shut up." My mom said, "I want you to look decent too, recently you've been looking a little pale and dusty. And also you smell weird, so go shower."

"Okay?" I stood up from the couch and stretched out my arms.

"Also please tell Lola that I am sorry for scolding her. I was just very overwhelmed and upset."

"Okay boss." I saluted.

Once I was sure the conversation was over I headed upstairs, quickly took a shower, then went into my room to find something decent to wear.

At that moment, I began wondering who my mom could be inviting over for dinner. I thought back to all the people she's met since dad left.

Grayson, Taylor, June, Brandon, and Miah.

Those were the people who were with my mom during the time our dad left and helped keep her sanity. Not only that, they are her coworkers so of course she'd be friends with them.

I guess since they are all cool people, I'll dress decent, just this once.

I let out a deep sigh as I dropped my towel, and threw my back on my bed.

"I haven't slept on this in forever." I moaned in comfort.

I didn't realize how emotionally and physically exhausted I was until my body fully relaxed on my mattress. I laid my body on my side, pulled my comforter over my body- simultaneously warming up my body.

The warmth automatically made my eyes heavy, and the next thing I know is I enter paradise.

"Rue." My mother's voice echoed. "Rue wake up."

I cracked my eyes open and looked at my mother who stood at the entrance of my room in annoyance.

I had to blink a few times for my vision to clear up, and when it did, I noted how fancy my mother was dressed.

Her normally curly hair was straightened and made in a low middle-part ponytail. She was wearing a loosely fitted jumpsuit that had a long slit in the middle, revealing cleavage. She didn't wear much jewelry, but it was simply because she didn't need it, the outfit was flashy enough. It seemed as if the jumpsuit was wearing her and she was the jewelry.  I looked down to her toes and saw tissue resting in between the cracks of her toes- her toenails were painted black.

"Mom." I gasped. "You- why?" I couldn't find the right words to say.

I haven't seen my mom dressed like this in a very long time. Of course, due to her job I see her in formal wear, but simply having guests over for dinner at our home wouldn't result in her dressing up like this.

She looks absolutely stunning.

"I came to wake you up Rue, you have an hour to be ready."

When she spoke, I took that as a moment to observe her face. She was barely wearing any makeup, but something about her face looked different.

"Is that lipgloss?" I squinted my eyes.

"Rue. Get ready please and look decent." She took a whiff of my room and cringed in disgust. "And try to make your room smell a little better, it smells like death."

I rolled my eyes and sat up from my bed. I completely forgot that I was naked when my blanket fell from my chest area revealing my cleavage.

My mom immediately left the room and shouted, "Hurry up!"

I stretched my body, got out of bed, and walked to my closet.

Who could be coming over for my mom to dress this nice. She couldn't have possibly dressed up like this for her coworkers- it's too inappropriate. Did she perhaps meet a man?

I sure hope that isn't the case because dad is back and I know she loves him still. There's no way my mom could have met a guy.

I groaned in disbelief at the possibility that it could be true.

"You know what." I said to myself. "It's cool."

Dad is back now, and when this is all over he'll come back and she will no doubt welcome him with open arms.

I grabbed some grey turtle neck top that I never wore, along with some high waisted black work pants that I also never wore along with a long black trench coat

I'm not going to dress up too fancy, but I don't want to disappoint my mom either.

For my hair, I just left it out in its natural curls. At this point I only had 45 minutes to get ready, and straightening my hair would be a bother.

For some reason mom wanted me to clean my room, but guess what- I wasn't going to do that.

I took random items that had no reason to be on my floor and threw it in my closet.

I looked under my bed and that's when I froze in place and my heart stopped.

That's the clothes that I wore that night. The clothes that were drenched in the blood of the innocent people I've slaughtered. The clothes that I had on when King kidnapped me and tortured me half to death with.

My breath hitched as I reached out to grab the clothes.

It seemed as if something pulled me back, because when my hands got close enough to reach, my body froze.

I pulled my hand back and sat up, leaning against my bed table in disbelief and fear.

I held back the tears that wanted to escape my eyes.

I didn't even think to question the location of the clothes from that night. I thought that because I woke up in my house with no bloodstained clothes, I thought I would've abandoned those clothes on my way home.

I don't really remember that night to have come up with a certain conclusion, but that's what I assumed.

I don't think I can bring myself to touch those clothes.

I traced the palm of my hand, and stood up.

I shook my head and took a calming breath to help maintain my emotions.

"Rue, it's okay, you're okay." I reassured myself.

I pulled the sleeves of my trench coat back to my shoulder since it slipped off while I was trying to grab the clothes under my bed.

"Rue!" My mom called.

I turned my head towards my door hoping she wouldn't walk in.

Quickly, unsure of what she was going to do— whether that's walking in or not— I took my comforter, and laid it out so it could cover my whole bed and that included the gap under my bed.

I grabbed my black Dr. Martens and rushed down the stairs.

There, at the front door, I saw the last thing that I wanted to see.

"Hello Young Rue." He was grinning at me.

He was grinning as if he knew he was getting under my skin by doing this.

King.

And behind him was,

"Wow, this is a beautiful home." She gasped in shock.

Haley.

What the actual fuck.
