"Would you look at that," I turned my head to where the voice came from and rolled my eyes as soon as I recognised it.

While Ron was allowed to leave after one night, I was ordered to stay in for another one. I would be free to leave the following evening, just to make sure everything went smoothly.

"Oh how the tables have turned," Malfoy said with an evil smirk on his face while observing the situation.

"You know, the reason why no one is here right now is because I'm supposed to rest. You being here will do the exact opposite." I spat, hoping he would take the hint and leave me alone.

Obviously, he was not going to do that. But a girl could dream.

"Aw, why? Will my presence make your heartbeat too fast? Or will you be up all night thinking about me instead of resting now?" He pouted but broke out into laughter towards the end of his sentence. "It's all of the above, isn't it?"

"That's funny coming from the one who kissed me. Twice." I retorted with a smirk. His smile faded in an instance, and he scrunched up his nose at the memory.

His attention fell on my bruised up leg, inspecting it for a while before looking out of the window again. "Seems quite serious." I assumed he was talking about my injury.

"As a matter of fact, it is," I began, looking at it myself. "But I still didn't whine about it as much as you did that day."

A smile crept on his face, and he shook his head, his expression turning serious again. "That's not funny."

"Well, the smile on your face said otherwise," I laughed and he rolled his eyes.

"Shut up."

The tension in the room immediately grew as the words left his mouth, reminding both of us too much of the other day. My eyes wandered around the room in an attempt to avoid eye contact, and I bit my lip to keep myself from saying something stupid.

"Don't do that," Malfoy muttered under his breath, and I raised an eyebrow. Don't do what?

Before either of us could say anything else, the big doors to the hospital swung open and Professor Lupin walked in with an apologetic smile on his face.

Malfoy looked back and forth between the professor and I before quickly hurrying out of the room without another word.

Lupin furrowed his brows at the sight but didn't bother asking any question. "God, Y/n, I'm terribly sorry," He began once he reached my bed. "I can't imagine how much that must've hurt."

His eyes were full of guilt, and I quickly shook my head. "Don't worry, sir. I barely felt anything! by the time I woke up, my legs were already numb!" I said, trying to cheer him up but quickly realised what I was saying didn't sound much better.

He huffed, pacing up and down the room. "This should've never happened. You shouldn't even have the chance to get in a situation like this.." He mumbled, more to himself than to me, anyway.

"You can't blame yourself, sir. It's not like you had any choice in the matter." I said, trying to reassure him. He clearly felt horrible about the whole ordeal, and I just didn't think he should blame himself.

"Thank you, Y/n, but you shouldn't have to try and make me feel better about it." He nodded as if agreeing with himself, before walking back towards the door. "I just really wanted to stop by and apologise in person," He clarified with a half-hearted smile. "You should probably rest now."

And with that, he left the room.

"There she is!" Wren cheered when I walked into our dorm the following evening. She had a big smile on her face and hugged me as soon as I walked in the door.

"Was it that bad without me?" I laughed at her welcome, and her facial expression really said it all. "You have no idea!" She whispered back with a smile, and we both fell onto our beds.

"I don't know how I managed without you before," She confessed before pushing a silver strand of hair behind her ear.

"Jeez, thanks, Inkwood!" One of the girls said, a sarcastic undertone in her voice and I giggled.

"Well, I'm really glad you're my best friend," I smiled, honestly meaning every word I said. I couldn't imagine a single person who would've been a better pick to fill that spot.

Instead of the big smile I expected to appear on Wren's face, all I was met with was a half-hearted one. Suddenly, her nails were more interesting than the conversation we were having, and she wasn't saying anything, either.

"I'm gonna get some fresh air," Wren informed me after a somewhat awkward silence. She made it sound like an obligation to tell me, rather than feeling the need to. I furrowed my brows, and my (y/e/c) followed her out of the room.

"Did I say something wrong?" I looked at the two girls, their expressions just as confused as mine. "Not in my book," one of them said, and I shook my head.

"Yeah, that's what I thought," I mumbled to myself before following her out of the room.

I almost caught up with the girl but was still hoping she would slow down a little. What was she in such a hurry for? "Would you just wait up!" I yelled in hopes that she would hear me.

To my surprise, she slowed down and turned towards me with a forced smile. "Are you okay?" I asked but quickly shook my head. "I'm sorry. Clearly you're not. What's wrong?" I corrected, putting my arm around her shoulder and gently leading her towards one of the courtyards.

We sat on one of the benches, the floor too cold to even consider it. "Nothing," Wren said, and I rolled my eyes at her.

"Come on, don't be like that now." I nudged her a little, and she gave me a small smile in return. "There we go."

"It's nothing, really. I mean, I just don't wanna talk about it, I think." I nodded, letting her know I understood. "You don't have to talk about it," I assured. "As long as you're gonna be fine?"

She nodded and, for the first time, I was the one to hug her.
