Chapter 89

"Would you like to tell me what that was?" asked McGonagall as the three entered her classroom, Adria's heart had sped up drastically, "you never told me you knew such complex magic, Miss Hopkins."

"Wha- Professor," Adria frowned, taking a deep breath as she done so, she shared a look with Sirius, who frowned at the bruises evident on her face.

"Adria, I think you forget that I have known you since your first year, do you really think I don't know when you lie?" asked McGonagall, her eyebrow raised, "I should punish you for using such hexes on students, but you were helping your sister, where you not? You were helping yourself, it was a mere act of self-defence," McGonagall spoke simply.

Adria couldn't help but feel the disbelief bubbling through her at McGonagall's words, the once stern woman, who was a little intimidating, if Adria was honest was now probably her favourite professor, she couldn't help but smile.

"Thank you, Professor," Adria smiled, breathing a sigh of relief, "really, thank you."

"Don't thank me," McGonagall waved her off, "you stuck up for yourself against three girls who bullied you, I've alerted Professor Dumbledore, and Professor Flitwick will deal with the girl's punishments, is there anything you would like to tell me, Adria, about what they did?"

"N-no," Adria shook her head, watching as McGonagall nodded with the ghost of a smile on her lips.

"Very well, you may go."

"Oh, Professor," Adria spoke as she turned on her heel, turning with her head to look at McGonagall, "Jessica, the, um, the main bully, I suppose, she had this tattoo on her wrist, it was rather odd, like a symbol, it may be nothing, but it was rather dark, I thought maybe you should know."

It took a moment for McGonagall to respond, she knew very well what this mark was, and what it represented and it brought a wave of nausea to engulf her that students, young students only in their sixth year had the mark permanently on their skin, a mark no one should ever have, "very well, Adria, thank you."

"Did those girls do this to you?" Sirius whispered as they walked down the hall, they had been quiet for most of the journey to where they were going, but Adria wasn't actually sure she knew where they were going.

"Mhmm," Adria nodded, feeling his hand tighten around hers, he merely pulled her closer to him, a sigh falling from his lips, "why didn't you tell me?"

"I was scared," she mumbled, her gaze on the ground. They stepped outside, the cold winter air breezing through Adria's hair as they walked, it seemed Sirius knew the way to their destination, and she allowed him to guide her.

"Scared?" Sirius repeated, wide eyed, "Adria, why?"

"Can I tell you when we stop?" she asked, turning to look up at him with eyes filled with pain, guilt, that Sirius couldn't help but nod his head.

Their feet crunched the leaves that littered the ground, Sirius was guiding Adria down to the black lake, it was out of the way and almost always quiet, he wanted that, he wanted her to confide in him, to be able to talk to him and realise that he would always be there.

Sirius sat with his back pressed against a tree, a gorgeous view of the black lake to the side of him, but then he had a perfect view of Adria who stood in front of him, a frown on her lips as she looked for a place to sit.

Sirius reached forward, grabbing her hand he guided her down beside him before he pulled her onto his lap, his arm tightly around her whilst she sat there, rather tense and a pained look in her eyes at the worry she had caused him.

But as he stared back at her, silently pleading her, begging to scream that it was okay, that she was safe, she finally started to relax, her hand trailed over his chest, her fingers dancing with the rhythm of his heart beat. She missed his touch, she missed him, she was distant from every one of her friends, and the thought sent a frenzy of guilt clouding her mind but she hoped that it was all over.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered, cupping his cheek with her hand, her thumb tracing small circles over his cheekbone which wasn't bruised, unlike hers.

"Now why are you sorry?" asked Sirius, her forehead rested atop of his, her eyes searching for anger in his gaze but there was none, he wasn't angry, and he hadn't a reason to be, he was just sad. Sad that she had to go through this, that she was in pain and he didn't know about it, sad that she was too scared to speak.

"I thought I was on the right track," she whispered, moving her head to rest it on his shoulder, she absentmindedly traced small patterns on the exposed skin his neck offered, she couldn't help it. She loved to touch him, to feel him under her fingers, it was a sense of realness to her, that he was there with her, that he wasn't going anywhere, that he was hers and she was his, and they were together, "I was laughing more often, I was smiling, sometimes I felt genuine happiness, and I was starting to catch up on my school work, I felt better, I felt that I could be myself again in no time!"

"What changed, Adria?" he asked, his lips pressed against the skin of her forehead, "what happened?"

"I was in the library one afternoon, I think after Halloween, a day I was dedicating to catching up, and I heard giggling. I thought nothing of it, yeah it was rather irritating but I talk all the time in the library, I couldn't really complain, so I just continue, and then I heard my name, and after, the girls, the three girls, they started saying things, mean things, saying if I was their daughter I'd want to die too, things so painful, I stomped away, I thought that was it, I could cope with words, but then words turned into violence from the same three girls, all the time, almost every day, I used to transform into my animagus form just to get away from them. I thought that if I told anyone, they'd be angrier, so I endured it, I didn't know what else to do, what else could I do?! I don't deserve to be a Gryffindor, Sirius, I couldn't even stand up for myself!" Adria exclaimed, unaware that she was crying onto Sirius' shoulder.

"Hey, that's not true, and you know it," Sirius lifted her head, making sure that she was looking right at him and spoke, "Adria, you are so brave, in your own way, you were so brave today, in front of so many people you where amazing, and you done it for Alina, which is so brave. You have this mindset that you shouldn't do things for yourself, that you should endure whatever is hurting you, and then you do something about it if it's for other people, and that needs to stop, you shouldn't need to hurt, you just proved that you can stick up for yourself, because you can stick up for other people!"

"I'm sorry for being so distant," Adria whispered, pressing a kiss to his jaw, "I love you, I really love you Sirius, I'm so, so sorry."

"Don't apologise for something you don't need to," he whispered, pulling her closer to him in a tight hug which she was quick to respond to, "I'm always here, Adria, I will say it every day if I have to, but I will always be by your side, to talk or to just cuddle, or to just be there with you, I'll be right here, and I'm not going anywhere, please don't think you need to handle your pain all on your own!"

"I know, I'm just relieved that I don't need to worry about them anymore," Adria sighed, "well, hopefully."

"No, you won't," Sirius shook his head, "we have a prank list but three girls have just made top of the list."

Adria couldn't help the small smile that fell onto her lips, "extra humiliating?"

"And extra cruel," Sirius smirked, lifting her chin and guiding her towards him where he slowly, and softly pressed his lips to hers. She pushed herself forward, as close as she could go, her hand on the side of his face and her other in his hair.

"Thank you," she mumbled against his lips, her eyes opening to capture his, "for being you, Sirius Black, thank you so much."

"Boys, have you met Adria?" Sirius joked as they made their way back to the boy's dormitory, suddenly, the three boys stood from their beds as if on que, making their way to the girl in front of them and huddling her with a group hug. She wrapped her arm around Remus, bringing her free hand to squeeze James whose arms wrapped around her shoulders, and then there was Peter who squeezed in and wrapped his arms around her waist tightly, allowing a laugh to leave her lips.

"Your eye, Ads," James murumered, lifting his hand up to graze the bruise softly, a frown evident on his lips at the sight, "who did this, was it those girls?" he growled, anger boiling in the pit of his stomach. Adria's head bowed to the floor, and James sent Sirius a look who merely nodded, confirming James' suspicions.

"They uh, they bullied me," Adria mumbled, a humourless laugh escaping her lips, "since November."

"November?!" James screeched, wide eyed, "they've bullied you for almost two months and you haven't told us?!"

"I was scared, James," she whispered, blinking away the tears as she lifted her head to look at him, her bottom lip quivered as she done so, and almost instantly did James' features soften, dropping the wand that was tightly gripped in his hand, his shoulders slumped as he pushed himself forward again, wrapping his arm around her tightly in a solo hug.

"Oh, Ads," he whispered, tightening her grip around her when she finally wrapped hers around him, "I'm sorry, I can't believe I didn't know, I would've helped you, I'm going to kill them, I don't care, they're dead!"

"No, it's okay," Adria shook her head, sending him a soft smile which he failed to return.

"It's not okay, Adria!" Remus exclaimed, wide eyed, "do you really think we're going to let them get away with this?!"

Adria sighed as she pushed herself forward, wrapping her arms around his waist tightly whilst his automatically wrapped around her, "I think I've handled it, I do, and if they try anything else, Sirius has already promised that they're at the top of your prank list, but I don't want anything to do with them anymore, I'm done, I don't care about them, I never have and the less I have to do with them, the happier I'll be."

"But that's the thing, isn't it?" Peter sighed, a pained look taking over his face as he pulled on Adria's hand, pulling her into a tight hug of his own, "you haven't been happy, Ads, you've been distant and it's been killing us, you're our best friend, for life, after life, forever, and the thought of anything hurting you, well, it hurts us, we don't want you going through anything like that, especially when you were on the track to recovery."

Adria tightened her grip on Peter, a small sigh leaving her lips as she rested her head on her shoulder, "Thea is one lucky girl to have someone like you, Pete," Adria mumbled, sending him a small smile which he returned with a wide grin.

"Actually, he's not Pete," Sirius piped in, sending a - completely joking - look to Peter as he pulled Adria into him, his arms wrapped protectively around her waist, "that's wormtail."

"W-wormtail?" she repeated, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion whilst her eyes turned to look at Sirius, "what?"

"Yes, wormtail," Sirius nodded, "and that's moony, and Prongs."

"Moony, seriously?" Adria groaned, elbowing Sirius when he attempted to make the terrible pun, "and Prongs, really? What's yours then, snuffles?"

James almost choked as he let out a loud laugh, clasping his hand over his mouth, "I don't know what you're laughing at, Bambi."

It was Remus' turn to let out a laugh, but when caught Adria's eyes, he stopped, "yeah, that's what I thought, woolly the wolf."

"Woolly the wolf!" Peter repeated, unable to hide the laughter that fell from his lips, "why woolly?" he exclaimed, shaking his head as he sat on his bed, whilst James and Sirius couldn't help their chuckles.

"Why not? Aren't werewolves fluffy, therefore, woolly!" Adria smiled, a laugh of her own escaping her lips, "I don't know why you're laughing, Ratty."

"That one wasn't very good," Sirius chuckled, tightening his grip around her as she nodded, "true, it was rather terrible, I'm not so fond of woolly the werewolf either, but I definitely enjoy snuffles."

"Very funny, Kitten."

"Don't you dare," she turned around his grip, pointing a finger at him with a warning look across her features, "you are not calling me kitten."

"I'm not," Sirius trailed off, a smirk attacking his lips.

"No," Remus shook his head, "we all are!"

"What?!" she shrieked, looking around at the four boys who erupted with laughter, "not kitten, seriously!"

"Do you really think I like moony?" Remus scoffed, shaking his head as he done so, "come on, Kitten," he smirked, wiggling his eyebrows whilst Adria groaned.

"I hate you all, I really do," she huffed, "now what really is yours?" she asked, turning to Sirius.

"Padfoot," she bit her lip to keep herself from giggling, "James picked it."

"I bet," she nodded, "fine I suppose if you have to live with Padfoot, I can cope with Kitten, mines isn't very original though."

"Hey, I came up with that, with my own brain and everything!" Peter exclaimed, an acussing look thrown her way whilst she merely let out a laugh, she moved to ruffle his hair, shaking her head as she done so.

"I suppose I can live with it then, wormtail," she chuckled, her eyes trailing over to James, "I prefer Bambi for you."

"You would," Sirius joked, earing a look from Adria.

"Y'know," she sighed, moving to sit on Sirius' bed, "I really do love you four."

"We love you too, Ads," James grinned, falling onto the space beside her, "with all our hearts."

"I know," she nodded, a small smile on her lips as she pulled on Sirius' hand to sit beside her, "it's just, over the past month or so, well actually, since July, I've not been myself, and I'm still coping, and I'm really dreading going home because my family don't have you guys to help them, and that's the thing, you guys have helped me so much, I feel so much better from seeing you all for ten minutes than I have in months, and I love that, and I love you four so much, I never thought back in third year would I ever have friends, I wished for friends, and now I have amazing friends, all of you, the girls, Finn and Milo, Blair, Arden, Lia, all of you, i don't know what I done to be so lucky, to have people who will be there for me, always, but I'm so glad, I really am."

"Always, Adria," Remus whispered, sitting close behind her, "like Peter said, forever, we'll be with you forever, until we all die of old age when we're two hundred!"

[A/N I'm embracing my inner monster with that last line lmao]
