Chapter 87

The multiple notes sprawled over Adria's desk in the library was enough to keep her busy for the full afternoon she was there for. She hated having to stress over her classes but the multiple times she had skipped this year was really taking a toll for the worse, her professors had told her multiple times that she really didn't need to worry about the work she had missed, but she couldn't help herself, she was already stressing about her O.W.Ls even though Halloween had just passed.

She wanted to know as much as she could, so missing a few classes would really dampen her performance during the exams, and that was the last thing she needed.

What was really irritating her, though, was the sound of girls muttering and giggling quietly to themselves at a table close to her, she didn't think anything of it at first, merely just getting on with her work, but that was until she heard her name falling from one of the girl's lips.

If it hadn't been for the fact that their giggling stopped for a few moments, then she would never had heard it, but now she was more curious than ever to know why they were talking about her. Of course, there was the possibility that they were talking of another Adria, but the name was uncommon, so it wasn't likely.

But then, it happened, as Adria sat there, trying her best not to move forward to hear, she didn't need to, the girl's voices had rose to the point where it was the only thing she could hear. She wondered where the librarian was, but she couldn't see her anywhere, "didn't her mum die?" one of the girls whispered, earning a collection of hums, confirming her statement.

"I'd want to die too," one scoffed, throwing a look of disgust in Adria's direction, "if she was my daughter, I'd kill myself as soon as she was born."

Adria bit her lip, straightening herself up, she shouldn't let anyone's comments distract her from what was important, especially when she hadn't the faintest clue who the girls where, "you only say that because you fancy Sirius Black."

Adria felt her fist clench under the table at the mention of Sirius, she was already containing herself from them even mentioning her mother, and whilst she was sure she was trying her best to contain herself, she was almost sent over the edge with that one comment.

"No, I agree, look at her," the third snorted, casting a look of judgment in Adria's direction, faking being sick to make her friends laugh, "honestly, If I was her I'd bury myself with my dead little mummy."

That was it, Adria couldn't take it anymore, she slammed her books shut, grabbing all which where hers, and trying her best to block out the rising sound of their giggles, she stomped out of the library, making sure not to make eye contact with any of the girls at that particular table.

"Adria!" the girl turned at the sound of her voice, coming face to face with Sirius, a wide smile on his lips that soon fell when he saw the pain that had taken over her features, "baby what's wrong?" he frowned, taking her face in her hand.

"Wha- oh, nothing," she waved him off, forcing a small smile onto her lips, "where were you?"

He gave her a worried look which he couldn't seem to help, and dropping his hands, he made sure to intertwine their fingers together tightly, taking off in the direction that Adria was previously going, "well I was looking for you," he laughed, pulling on her hand to bring her closer, "but the boys and I where setting up a prank."

Adria didn't respond, she had barely heard his words, her mind was racing on who those girls where, they certainly weren't in her year and their Ravenclaw robes told her that they definitely weren't in the same house, she was rather upset as annoying as it was, that those girls could be so mean about someone that they didn't even know.

Or to anyone for that matter.

"Adria!" Sirius waved his hand in front of her face, watching as she jumped slightly, blinking her eyes furiously, she turned to look at him.

"Wha- oh, I'm sorry, what did you say?"

"I asked how your day was," Sirius mumbled, "are you okay, princess?"

"You called me Princess, why are you worried?" asked Adria, frowning as she done so, "I'm okay Sirius, really."

"You don't seem okay, Adria," Sirius whispered, they had stopped walking in the direction of the Gryffindor tower, and with his free hand, Sirius pulled her into a tight hug, his hand tangled in her curls that fell down her back longer than it had ever been, she really needed to get it cut again after last Christmas, it was far too long.

She forced a soft laugh, wrapping her arms around him tightly, "you worry too much, Sirius, I'm fine," she lied, the gears in her mind was turning at a fast pace, and whilst she wanted to tell Sirius, she thought it was completely stupid. It was only a few comments about her, rather insulting, yes, but she could cope with it, or so she thought, she hated those girls saying things about her mum, or Sirius, when they didn't know them, and whilst they insulted her, and not them, it still completely irritated her.

"You know you can talk to me, right?" he mumbled into her hair, pressing a kiss to the top of her head, "about absolutely anything, I would always listen."

She took a moment to answer, merely nodding her head into his chest where her head lay, but finally she spoke, "I know," and with a small smile completely forced onto her lips, Adria retracted her arms from around him, and pulled him along in the direction of the tower.

-

The isolated hallway that Adria had tucked herself away in brought her peace and contentment for the first time in a long time, her book filled with poems that she had written a while ago where sprawled out onto the pages in front of her, and she missed it.

She missed poems more than she cared to admit but it was her fault, really, that she hadn't written in a while, it was sad that she hadn't written them, when they were once her full life, she just seemed so busy now, but she was determined to put more time into her poems, into her book, because it was a hobby that she had unknowingly given up, and she really didn't want that.

Her pen tapped on the page in front of her, she wanted to write about her mother, something happy that she would be able to smile at, something simple that she could remind herself of, her mind seemed clouded by the events of a few days ago, when the girls she was unfamiliar with had said things about her and she didn't know why.

But pushing that to the back of her head, thinking of the memories that she allowed to seep through of her mother, she was happy that she wasn't crying, but rather, a small smile fell onto her lips at the thought of her.

I can't deny the pain I feel
that you have gone away,
but It doesn't compare to my love
I feel, each and every day.

It was short, but ultimately, it was true, she was in so much pain that her mother was gone, that her mother had passed away, but her love had grown in strength, she was growing stronger with the memories in her mind that she loved. She loved her mother so much, love that strengthened her in every way, love that made her brave, and strong, and the true Gryffindor that she finally accepted that she was.

But, she didn't feel like a true Gryffindor, true and brave, when the sight of the three familiar girls from the library, the familiar laughing as they turned the corner that ultimately stopped at the sight of Adria that sat with her knees up in front of her.

"Look who it is," Adria's head snapped up at the sound, her eyes casting a lingering glance over the three girls, watching as they took a few steps forward so that they were close to her. She couldn't help but see the striking resemblance in the three girls with her old 'friend' Melanie from her house back in Scotland, and that thought terrified her, "You're a mudbloods aren't you?"

Adria stood, her lips twitching at the vile word, and as she silently packed her things away, she could feel her insides turning with disappointment in herself, in her house, she should be brave, standing her ground, but here she was shying away from conflict like a coward would.

"I'm talking to you!" the girl growled, grabbing Adria's arm roughly, ultimately halting her actions. Adria's eyes trailed to the girl's hand wrapped tightly around her wrist, but what stood out to Adria was the odd tattoo which marked the girl's wrist, it was a symbol of sorts, or that's what Adria thought, anyway, and a rather odd symbol if she was honest, "you're nothing but dirt," the girl spat, her nose upturned whilst her friends smirked widely behind her.

"Yeah, don't know why you're so popular," one of the girl's friends scoffed, "look at you, the little disgusting mudblood that you are, don't know what Sirius Black sees in you!" the three girls laughed at the comment, and Adria couldn't help the yelp that left her lips when the girl squeezed her wrist.

"Your nothing but a pathetic little girl," the one with a hold on her sneered, rolling her eyes when Adria attempted to pull her wrist from the girl's grip, "turned mute or something? You're a disgrace to your own house, can't even talk!"

"Yeah, there should be a new house at Hogwarts!" the one to the right piped in, "called the mud blood house, and you and your little red head friend Evans should sit there with the other mud bloods of the schools."

Good one, Adria supressed the urge to roll her eyes, her anger was bubbling inside of her but in a way, the girl was right, she was pathetic, she wasn't even doing anything to defend herself, she just wished to run away, if she was honest, and that definitely wasn't what a Gryffindor would do.

"You're wasting our time," the one right in front of Adria grumbled, "I'm going to deal with you the muggle way, seeing as you're so proud to be one!" and when Adria's wrist was free, the girl hoped she would be too.

But that wasn't the case.

It happened so quickly, she was unsure why the girls hated her, or muggle-born's so much, the prejudice was getting out of hand if they thought being mean was going to solve anything, but they didn't just think being mean was going to solve anything.

They thought violence would too, and Adria quickly realised what the girl meant by 'the muggle way' when the girls fist collided with her cheekbone, sending her to the ground with a gasp, her hand clutched her cheek in pain, ignoring the tears that welled in her eyes as she attempted to back away, feeling a swift kick to her stomach, she couldn't help the groan that escaped her lips in pain.

She could feel her heart racing, and fear creeping up her spine whilst the girls laughed loudly, making sure to each get a hit in before the rushed off down the hall when loud footsteps clicked along the floor.

Adria groaned quietly, a whimper of pain bubbling from her lips as she tried her best to get up, she felt humiliation rising in her after the previous events, she was a coward, pathetic and weak as they come, a true disgrace to Gryffindor that she didn't even try to defend herself.

"Miss Hopkins!" Adria's eyes fluttered opened, feeling the pain seeping through her body, she pushed it to the back of her mind when she saw Professor McGonagall standing over her, worry shielding the professors features as she leaned down to help the teenager to her feet, "merlin's beard, Adria, who did this to you?!" her head of house gasped, her thumb tracing over the redness of her cheekbone that would surely cause a black eye.

"N-no one, Professor," Adria whispered, unsure of telling anyone would be the best idea, as getting the girls in trouble would surely cause them to get angry, "I, I tripped," it didn't take a genius - even though McGonagall certain was one - to know that Adria was lying, there was no fall that could give her a mark like that.

"I won't tolerate lying, Adria, you know this," McGonagall sighed, placing her hand on the girl's shoulder comfortingly.

"I'm not lying!" Adria snapped, "I'm completely fine, Professor, I fell over because I'm stupid and clumsy, and that's all now please just leave me alone!"

The tears fell from Adria's eyes in frustration, watching the Professor take a step back at her outburst she took it as an opportunity to leave, so as she shakily picked up her belongings, and with a quick "sorry," in McGonagall's direction which she simply couldn't help, Adria rushed down the hallway as best as she could, clutching her stomach as she done so whilst the pain felt all too evident.
