Chapter 11

Halloween had gone terribly quickly in Adria's opinion, she wished it was a week-long instead of a day, and there was the run in with Regulus Black which ultimately made it worse. But, then there were the rumours the following day of Sirius Black's detention for fighting, and his victim? None other than his brother Regulus.

He never bothered her after that.

The large swelling on the side of Regulus' face where he received a black eye from none other than Sirius was almost painful for Adria to see whenever she passed him in the hallways, she was glad he wasn't bothering her but she thought maybe Sirius had gone a little too far.

She wondered why he punched him instead of used magic, but the end results were effective anyway, and that's the type of fighting Adria would use, as a muggle-born.

It was the day after the full moon in November which meant that it was only the start of the month but Adria was rather worried about Remus as he hadn't showed up to classes for another few days, just like last month.

Adria currently sat in the Gryffindor common room, her legs sprawled across the blood red couch under a soft blanket that her mother had bought her, atop her legs was a new muggle book that her father sent her with a letter complaining that the owl bit him, and he had to get stitches. The letter made Adria laugh when he explained his encounter with the doctor wondering why he was trying to untie a letter from an owl's leg.

"Adria Hopkins, just the girl I wanted to see!" a smirking Mary MacDonald said as she fell onto the end of the couch. Adria's eyes rose from the book to Mary with curious eyes. She knew that smirk, and it worried her.

"Should I be worried?" asked Adria, even though she already was.

"Of course," Mary scoffed jokingly, Adria cautiously placed the book down beside her, pulling her legs into a basket before giving Mary her full attention, "I heard a rumour."

"A rumour?" Adria repeated, worry filling her stomach as to how it concerned her, she never really got herself involved with rumours and things like that, "about?"

"You." Mary smirked, causing Adria's eyes to widen drastically, she pointed her hand to her chest.

"M-Me?"

"Yes!" Mary laughed, "and Sirius." Adria groaned, throwing her head back and kicking her legs in frustration.

"Oh god," Adria muttered, "what is this rumour saying?"

"That Sirius fancies you, and he admitted it." Adria let out loud laugh in disbelief, her eyes wide whilst she covered her mouth to muffle her giggles, she shook her head furiously, suddenly relaxing at the stupid words.

"Are you kidding?" asked Adria, throwing her head back with laughter, "Sirius doesn't fancy me, he hates me!"

"Maybe he does," Mary shrugged, a small smirk still playing at her lips, "I heard from Evan Buckley who heard from Ana Caston, who heard from some Hufflepuff who heard from someone in Gryffindor who overheard Sirius telling James, Remus, and Peter at the Gryffindor table."

"Okay that was a journey," Adria scoffed, "Evan Buckley and Ana Caston, the Ravenclaw's? They don't even know who I am!"

"Yes, they do!" Mary exclaimed, "Adria everyone knows who you are, if I'm talking to someone they always ask about you!"

"That's a lie!" Adria scoffed, "Sirius liking me is a lie too, Mary, and i'll even prove it to you!"

"How are you going to do that?" Mary asked, standing as Adria done.

"I'll ask Sirius, simple." Adria shrugged, grabbing the book from the table. She knew that Sirius, James, and Peter were in the boys dormitory, as she noticed them walking up there about half an hour ago, "Come on."

"Are you really going to ask Sirius?" Mary asked warily, the smirk had left her lips as she hesitantly walked after Adria, who was walking up the stairs to the boy's dormitory as if It wasn't odd at all.

When she arrived at the third year dorm, she knocked twice and waited with Mary peaking from behind her shoulder, "maybe we can ask Remus or someone, later?" the taller of the two suggested, but Adria just shrugged and waited until Peter came to the door with a frown.

"Hi Peter," Adria grinned, pushing past him and into the Dormitory where James lay on his bed with a golden snitch fluttering above him and Sirius leaned against the wall with an astrology book in front of him.

"Oi!" Sirius exclaimed, "what do you want?"

"To ask something." Adria shrugged, "Mary told me there's a rumour going about, and I'm here to prove that it's not true." She sat on the edge of Remus' bed and she only knew it was his with the three cardigans messily bundled at the bottom of it.

"What's the rumour?" asked James who had sat up on his bed, the snitch now clasped in his hand, and Adria wondered how he got it. She knew he was on the Gryffindor Quidditch team, something she wasn't overly fond with, but she wasn't sure that players could just steal equipment.

"That Sirius fancies me," Sirius almost choked on air, looking wide eyed at James who was looking at Peter. It was true...well not exactly, Sirius had admitted that he didn't hate Adria, but he didn't outright say that he fancied her. He couldn't deny that he liked her, and would rather she didn't hate him, but he would never admit to that, especially when she was dead set that it wasn't true.

"Who told you that?" Sirius asked, his eyebrow raised and trying his best to act natural, he had closed the astrology book over and now stood nearer to her.

"Mary heard from Evan Buckley who heard from Ana Caston, who heard from some Hufflepuff who heard from someone in Gryffindor who apparently overheard you telling James, Peter, and Remus at the Gryffindor table." Adria shrugged, she had found an interest in one of Remus' cardigans which was very soft to her, and wondered if he would really notice if she took it.

"Well," Sirius muttered, "it's not true."

"Ha!" Adria grinned widely, pointing at Mary who rolled her eyes, "see I told you!" she grabbed the cardigan, rolling it into a smaller ball before standing up to leave.

"I didn't say it was true either!" Mary exclaimed, "I said maybe he does."

"Which is still suggesting it," Adria huffed, "That'll be all." She went to leave when Sirius stopped her.

"Do you really think we cant see you trying to steal Remus' cardigan?" he asked, his eyebrow raised as he attempted to hide the small smirk on his lips. Adria's shoulders slumped when she realised she was caught.

"Wait," she said, "boy's cant get into the girls dormitories, right?" she asked, looking at Mary too who shook her head no.

"Great," Adria grinned, waving at Peter who returned the gesture and leaving out the door with the cardigan still in her hand.

"Why'd you steal one of Remus cardigans?" asked Mary, her eyebrow raised as they returned to their positions on the couch, Adria placed her book back on the table near the couch and unraveled the cardigan from the ball it was in.

"Feel it,"Adria said simply, gesturing to the cardigan which Mary finally felt. Her eyes widened at the softness whilst Adria giggled, "that's why!"

"Why didn't you tell me, I want one!" she huffed, leaning back on the couch. Adria placed the cardigan over her bare arms, it smelled like Remus and she wondered how he was doing. She didn't know where he was and he wasn't with his friends that it worried her, Remus was like a brother, and definitely a best friend to her and she wondered what was going on with him.

"I'm worried about Remus," Adria sighed, Mary was now working on the charms homework that Professor Flitwick issued, and Adria continued to read her muggle book, but it was hard to focus when she wondered where he was.

"Then ask them where he is," Mary said, nudging her head behind Adria. Adria turned to see the three boys she had just seen previously walking down the stairs, and stood quickly. She threw her book at Mary who squealed at the contact but Adria just smirked whilst almost stumbling into Sirius.

"Hello?" Sirius greeted, almost as though it was a question.

Adria rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest before asking, "where's Remus?"

"W-what do you mean...where's Remus?" asked Sirius, Adria took note of the small stutter and the fidgeting before frowning, "he's...around."

"Mhmm," Adria nodded, her eyebrow raised, "where?"

"He's just busy, he's helping some professors with...uh, stuff." James piped in whilst Sirius nodded furiously.

"I thought we were going to visit Remus in the-" James smacked a hand over Peter's mouth, who was frowning, and completely confused about the whole situation.

"Excuse me, we have to go now!" Sirius exclaimed hurriedly, dragging Peter along. Adria watched the three of them made their way out of the common room, all three stumbling over each other in a complete hurry.

She stood for a moment, turning to Mary and looking down at what she wore, well she had shoes on so that counted for something, "don't follow!" she announced suddenly, quickly but quietly rushing out of the common room after the three boys.

Visiting Remus where? Adria thought. She had a frown on her lips as she spotted the three boys instantly. She knew the corridors like the back of her hand and if she could replace her classes with Hogwart's corridor knowledge then she'd sure be the best in every class.

She watched them turn each hall, and concluded they knew where they were going. She followed behind, making sure she was rather far and that her footsteps were soft and light so that she wouldn't be caught. She could hear them talking faintly but couldn't make out what they said.

Adria's eyebrows furrowed when she saw them enter the hospital wing, but instead of following after them she waited outside, her head leaning against the castle wall and she could hear them talking clearly inside.

"How're you doing?" she heard Sirius, she frowned, he sounded different from his usual confident, annoying, smug voice that she grew to hate.

"I'm fine." A hoarse sounding Remus responded, Adria clasped a hand over her mouth when she realised that Remus was hurt, she just didn't know why.

"Adria's worried about you," Sirius said after they had talked for a few minutes, Adria's heart raced when she realised they were talking about her, she hadn't been caught yet but she knew she couldn't stay for long.

"Does she know?" asked Remus suddenly worried, "did you tell her?"

"Course not," Sirius scoffed, "don't worry about her knowing Remus! She's not that smart is she? it'd be a shock if she figured out."

Adria stopped, trying to ignore the feeling of hurt bubbling in her stomach at the insult. Just when she thought Sirius wasn't that bad...that maybe she could tolerate him, did he always have to ruin it some way or another. She bit her lip to stop the tears welling in her eyes, she hated that she was getting so affected by his words, but he had basically just called her dumb, and whilst she knew she wasn't the smartest, and that magic didn't come easy to her, she wasn't...completely thick, was she?

She decided she had enough of following the boys, and didn't stick around to hear Remus' response, but she did manage to hear them all laugh. She coughed away the sob threatening to fall from her lips, she was humiliated, was this how everyone saw her? As the dumb, muggle-born Gryffindor?

She was hurt at Sirius' words, they stung, but what hurt the most was that Remus actually laughed at them, he laughed at his friends humiliation and he didn't even know she was there. He didn't even defend her, he just laughed.

She was furious, she wanted nothing more than to prove them wrong, that she could actually do magic well, if not better than others. Her eyes narrowed as she took a detour, and instead of going back to the Gryffindor common room she made a beeline for the Library.

She was fueled by rage at Sirius, she wasn't surprised that he made her feel like an idiot when he was always the one that managed to put her down. She ignored the stares from students as she stomped to each bookshelf, piling book after books onto her arms. She didn't want Lily to help her with Potions anymore, or for Dorcas to tell her how to flick her wand in Charms, she hated that Mary had to help her in battles when it came to Defence Against the Dark Arts.

No.

She would do it herself.

The librarian was rather wary that the girl was taking so many books but after reassuring her that she would definitely return them as soon as she was done with them, she was finally able to leave. She almost forgot she was wearing Remus' cardigan, and took it off as soon as she reached the Gryffindor common room where the boys sat, they looked in her direction as soon as she returned with the books in her hand, and knew something was wrong when she balled Remus' cardigan into a ball and forcefully threw it at Sirius face.

Before he was even able to open his mouth to ask her 'what the hell?!' she had already stomped up the stairs to the girls dormitory, with the books tightly gripped in her hand and her face hot with anger.
