My Tears Ricochet

You were planting flowers on the soil that you buried me in

I was hopeful for thinking you were digging me out.

That you were here to retrieve me,

From underneath this graveyard of a front yard

That you let your hooves trample upon recklessly.

My nails have chipped from scratching at the surface.

My lungs filled with dirt and rock and clay

I can barely say a word from here where my body lays.

Only your name, only your name -

Only your name comes out

If I had told you to put the knife down kindly,

Would you have let it?

If I had screamed less viciously and thrown my armor on the floor more gently,
Would you have let me go?

You didn't know the body had a life when you were dragging it

On your floorboard - the blood still red and rich as rubies

From a heart that pumps its way into the ears of those

Who'll press their heads on your unholy ground

I should have known better than to trust a perfect person

There's no such thing as you

There'll always be a flaw, a telltale sign

And even in your crime, there lies a smoking gun

The body that you buried has not gone cold

It's still alive

And you can hear my beating heart in the silence of your home,

In every knife you use and in every coin you own

In every cloth you wear and in every lifeless stare

You will hear me in the breeze, you will see me in your dreams

Your footsteps will always seem to match a heart that beats and beats

Your crime will come out soon,

In this garden that's a tomb,

The flowers that you planted over my dead body grew

Into mouths with stems and petals and it broadcasted

My heartbeat to the neighborhood,

To the bus stops, to the cops

And when you hear the sirens and the police dogs sniff me up

When my hands stick out the soil and yours are bound in cuffs

I hope you look into my eyes and see

That this heartbeat never stops

It'll just beat on and on and and on

Even when you're gone.
