It was only a second day at school when Maya witnessed something shocking. A sweet boy, who introduced himself as Mike and borrowed her notebooks so she could catch up with the material was pushing around another student.

His victim haven't bothered to fight back. Perhaps they were discouraged by the group of Mike's friends. The cute looking brown-haired was just standing there letting other people do as they please.

"Lucas, Lucas, Lucas... don't you know it's rude to snitch on people?"

Was Mike playing mafioso right now, or something?

"I don't care I won't be covering your ass. A teacher asked what I saw and I told them and I would do it again" apparently, it was not an answer Mike was looking for.

Maya gasped as Mike hit Lucas straight in the face with his fist, her legs moved on her own as she said

"Wait... stop" Maya found herself saying. Why was she getting involved? That was stupid move.

One of Mike's friends stopped her from approaching the boys, the boy pushed her a little too strong as he said "Mind your business bitch" Maya was sent flying on the wall.

She hit on the hard surface she instinctively touched her head. Fuck. There was blood. Hopefully, she wasn't bleeding too much. As she was trying to get up someone helped her, it was Nicole.

"Hey sorry I didn't mean to-"

"Marcus, you're a fucking idiot don't you know who she is?" Nicole asked pushing the guy away before he managed to reach his hand out to help Maya stand up.

"Who?" Marcus asked with a hint of confusion noticeable in his voice

"She's Sorrentino's little sister," Nicole said

"They have a sister?" now, the confusion shifted into a terrified expression "stop messing with me" he warned Nicole

She only rolled her eyes in response.

"I'm not messing with you. Better ask yourself if your parents have money to cover your funeral"

"Fuck. Fuck. Hey I'm sorry I didn't mean to"

"It's okay, nothing happened" Maya muttered.

"Nothing happened? You're bleeding. Come with me I will take you to the nurse"

This was unfortunately the last thing Marcus has said because Lucas got off the floor and threw himself at him.

That's why men have a shorter lifespan. What the fuck.

This time it was Lucas who started the fight and he looked like he's about to kill Marcus. For some reason, Nicole seemed completely unaffected by this display of violence. She was more worried about her cousin.

But instead of going to the nurse's office, Maya convinced Nicole to take her to the bathroom and there assess if the damage is serious enough.

"The bleeding stopped right? So there's no need to make a fuss" Maya assured and Nicole nodded.

"Are you sure you don't want to tell any of your brothers I know them longer than you, they will be pissed about this"

"You're right you know them longer than me. I'm just a strange girl who suddenly lives at their house why would they care about me" Maya responded and this response shocked Nicole.

"Hey, are you serious? You're their baby sister. You would see they care if you'd told them"

"Nicole I don't want them to know," Maya said stubbornly.

"Fine. Do whatever" Nicole gave up with a deep sigh. She had a bad feeling about this.

In the midway of the last lesson, Maya started experiencing a killer headache and she would do anything to have painkillers in her backpack. Unfortunately, she didn't.

The road home with Gianni and Simon was another torture. She would prefer Alessio and Diego this time as they were far quieter than this duo and they didn't try to be friendly with her, they just ignored her.

As she got out of the car she felt dizzy by the sudden movement and would fall flat on the ground if Simon didn't catch her

"Hey, are you okay?" He said with worry clear in his voice.

Maya nodded "yeah I just got up too fast it's alright"

"If you feel bad we need to let Salvatore know," Gianni says with a hint of command in his usually carefree voice.

"No, I'm fine"

"Maya you better be telling the truth" Gianni warned.

"Why won't you eat with us?" Simon asked curiously

"I prefer to eat on my own"

"Sit with us Maya" Salvatore commanded and again, not a dog. Completely defeated she seated herself on the table farthest from Simone who seemed to be the most overprotective of all brothers but unfortunately, it meant she was sitting next to Diego which was the scariest one right after Salvatore. She started to questioning her own choices right away.

At this point, Maya wasn't even interested in pretending to eat. It was just too difficult at the moment. The world around her was spinning and all she needed was to lie down and sleep unfortunately her state did not escape her oldest brother's attention

"Maya, why aren't you eating?"

"Not hungry. Can I be excused?"

"No. Finish what's on your plate" he instructed.

"I can't"

"Why?"

"I don't feel well"

"She almost tripped when she was walking out of the car today" Simon pointed out

"I'm alright"

"I will call doctor Bianchi" Alessio announced, which was surprising, he was the one who showed absolutely no interest in Maya's existence so far. Or at least that's how Maya understood his seemingly indifferent behavior.

At some point, there was no point in hiding that Maya has hit her head so she admitted it. The doctor checked the injury.

"It's probably nothing major, just a mild concussion but we should check at the hospital to make sure there's no internal bleeding" the doctor announced and Maya was forced to spend three hours with no one other but her oldest brother with his dangerous and overbearing presence. He was doing something on his laptop or talking on the phone for the most time so thankfully she didn't get much of his attention for now

"Can I go to school tomorrow I have a first test I don't want to be absent" Maya asked her doctor with desperation. She didn't need any more skipped classes this semester.

"Depends on how you feel. If tomorrow your head still hurts you need to stay in bed until it passes, alright?"

Maya nodded slowly agreeing to the terms. Her plans however were ruined by Salvatore who said

"You will stay at home tomorrow" he sensed that Maya is about to argue because he sends her a stare that made her keep her mouth shut before she will make it worse.

"I want to know what happened" he demanded. "When did you hit your head"

"I fell" she mumbled.

"On your back? How exactly did you fall?"

"I-"

"The truth please"

"Someone accidentally pushed me" half-truth was always more believable than a complete lie.

"If it was an accident why were you trying to hide it"

"I just didn't- I don't know"

"Maya"

"Nothing happened, I'm alright" she assured him

The thing with Salvatore because of his unreadable expressions it was impossible to tell what he thinks. Maya just hoped he bought her story completely and there won't be any more troubles oh how wrong she was.

The next day at school she didn't saw Marcus during the classes. The other boy who was involved in the fight - Lucas was his name, he disappeared as well. During the lunch break, she learned what happened

"Lucas, Marcus and Mike are suspended"

"What?"

"Yeah apparently headmaster himself called their parents after he reviewed the camera footage. Someone told him about the whole incident. And no one knows why but the oldest of Sorrentino brothers showed up as well"

Shit.

"Wait?"

"Yeah. Salvatore in person. Can you believe it?"

"Holy shit it can't be good"

Maya felt nauseous. This time it had nothing to do with her head being injured the pain has passed a few hours ago. Now another headache was about to appear. If Salvatore saw the footage he knew what happened and that she lied.

Why was she trying to hide it even? It's not like he was her mother's lover or anything. Old habits die hard?

Nicole didn't like and the whole city knew Sorrentinos if her oldest brother's arrival has made such a commotion among the small group of high school students.

Nevertheless, the one thing was clear - Maya was screwed.

"Maya come here!" Diego barked at her and she once again felt like a dog being summoned,

"What," she said tiredly

"Some idiot pushed you and you decided to hide it from us?

Nothing stayed private in this school.

"Why would I tell you?"

Diego looked speechless as if he didn't know what to say

"The fuck do you mean why? I'm your brother"

"So?" Maya was raised as an only child she had no idea what siblings were suppose to be telling each other, Diego always acted like her presence was something deeply upsetting and annoying so she had no idea why he wasn't appreciating the fact that she decided not to bother him with anything regarding her.

"I can't. You" he pointed rudely at Simone "you know how to talk to her"

Simon shook his head and send a mean smile to his brother "Diego is trying to say that he's worried about you"

"Alright I think we need to have a chat"

Maya didn't get to see what kind of a talk the two brothers are about to have because Simon started running the moment Diego has tried to approach him.
