Maya just wanted some freedom.

Since her brothers discovered her difficult relationship with food they have been controlling what and when she was eating.

Everything had to be reported to Salvatore. She was also forced to attend mandatory therapy sessions and Salvatore said that if she won't start eating properly he will send her to the treatment clinic without a second thought and he wasn't the type of person who would make empty promises.

That being said a plan formed in Maya's head. A job, she needed a job after school. Something that would keep her mind off things. She needed to regain control, she needed get away from the house and start saving money.

Unfortunately, her request was met with zero enthusiasm.

"No"

"But why?"

"Because you're 15. You don't need a job" Salvatore said simply.

"But I want one," she said stubbornly trying at the same time to look serious and mature instead of like a child who was just refused a cookie. Salvatore probably saw the latter.

"I understand however in this house you don't get what you want you to get what I think is best for you and I won't allow you to have a job at the age of fifteen when you should be focused on school. Maya you have enough money as it is. Our family, I'm sure you realized the moment we've met, is rich. You don't need to work and even if you want to I won't allow it as long as you study. Is there anything you need to ask me? And Maya and it better be on a different subject because this one is closed"

"No" I don't.

"Then you may leave"

It took everything in her to not slam the door as she was leaving Salvatore's office. He probably wouldn't appreciate it.

As she was leaving a man in a fancy red suit has passed by her and knocked to Salvatore's office. Maya sometimes wondered who are those people. Why does her brother need security standing in front of his office 24/7, who is he? Who are the people who come to visit him?

Why are her brothers filthy rich? "Family business" is a very vague statement and Maya wished she knew more about what Salvatore's job entails but she wasn't about to ask him, every meeting with him felt like she was at the principal office. She wanted to leave as soon as she arrived.

"Someone is in a bad mood" Diego pointed out, he was mean.

"Someone is not minding their own business"

"Someone is a cranky little brat"

"Can you stop being annoying for a second?"

"No can do little sis"

"Get Diego a goal next time that is achievable for him" Gianni teased and because of that he received a death stare from his older brother.

The next day Maya's bad mood worsened as she received her grade. An F. Shit. That's what she needed another conversation with Salvatore.

Just when she wanted to be mature and asked him to let her get a job she failed the test at school. Damnit.

Don't cry don't cry don't cry she chanted in her head.

"Hey, are you okay?" A quiet, warm voice from behind asked. It was Lucas.

"I failed the math test"

Well, Lucas couldn't relate. He was the best student in their class, straight As. Fucking mister perfect. He was handsome as well and for an unknown, Maya's reason, he decided to be friendly with her. She didn't know what he saw with her yeah it was easy and nice to speak with him but he probably gets along well with everyone.

"I can help you with the material if you want" he offered

"Really?" She said hopefully and he nodded and smiled at her.

"Sure, coffee after school?"

"Friday?"

"It's a date"

A date?

Wait.

Woah.

She had a date?
________________________________
There was no way Salvatore would allow her on a date, she knew. Even if the meeting was not only about getting them to know each other, they would also study, Maya had a gut feeling that this wouldn't have helped her case anyway and Salvatore would straight out refused.

She didn't bother to ask him.

Instead, she needed to figure out a plan. There had to be an option to meet with Lucas for at least an hour without her brothers finding out. That of course would require a cover, an alibi if you will, that only one person could give her - Nicole.

However - to Maya's surprise - her cousin wasn't so easy to convince.

Actually, Nicole first instinct was to say

"Absolutely not"

"But Nicole... you said yourself that I need to stand my ground and rebel a little..."

"Yeah, I did but you know what will happen if they will find out? You will be grounded forever while me and Lucas will be killed"

"Don't overreact, it's just a meeting over coffee. Besides we will actually study math they can't get too angry over something like that"

"If it's just a coffee and study session ask them if you can go"

Maya didn't answer that. She knew they wouldn't let her go.

"Nicole please Lucas is so nice to me... I just I never really dated as I am so excited I promise it's only for an hour I will go to your place and will disappear for an hour they won't find out"

"Eh... you're lucky I'm the best cousin on earth I guess"

"Yes!!" Maya hugged Nicole with joy.
_______
"Salvatore wants you at his office" Alessio instructed not looking up from his phone

Salvatore already knows about her bad grade, huh? It seemed like nothing escapes his guardian's attention, unfortunately.

One thing was sure with him he was not beating around the bush, he got straight to the point as soon as Maya entered his office.

"As I recall I have told you before that if you have a problem with the material at school you should ask one of your brothers for help," he said calmly, as if nothing had happened. Seeing stressful gaze his eyes were almost gentle.

"I know, sorry"

"You will ask Alessio for help, I want you to see an A on your next test. Is that clear? And don't let me repeat myself"

"Yes" she nodded, she was determined. Even if it was impossible for her to get a good grade like that (because she was stupid) she would work hard, really hard so at least she would get a better grade, the one that Salvatore would classify as "trying her best" and just let it go accepting that not all the siblings of his can be smart, right?

There was also now a chance to bring Maya's plan to life.

"Actually I wanted to visit Nicole tomorrow and study with her. I didn't have a chance to be outside of the house since I arrived here and the change of scenery would be good" she said looking at Salvatore pleadingly "we really want to study together because Nicole is struggling with the same material"

"Well technically I should have ground you for getting a bad grade but I see your point. If you can promise me your visit with Nicole will be used only for academic purposes I will allow it"

Promise? Fuck.

She watched the person before her and she knew a promise was not taken lightly by him, she just had a gut feeling that breaking a promise made with Salvatore could not end well but she couldn't back down now so she said

"I promise"

Oh, how stupid she was.

She shouldn't have said this.
