"So, you goin' to Damitri's birthday party?" Maggie asked while pulling money out of her wallet.

"Hell not." Arnell responded.

Maggie busted out laughing. "You mean 'hell no'?" She asked.

"I said what I said." Arnell told her.

"Ima steal that." Maggie laughed.

They were at Orange Leaf getting some frozen yogurt. It's been awhile since they've gotten to hang out with each other by themselves.

"I thought you liked him." Maggie stated as the left.

Arnell shrugged. She didn't know what she was feeling. She liked him, but then she didn't.

"How much longer is your car going to be in the shop?" Arnell asked Maggie.

She had been driving around in her mom's car for the past few days because something was wrong with hers. The only time she wasn't allowed to use it, was for school.

"I don't know, it should be out in a couple of days." She replied.

"You hangin' out wit Jay today?" Arnell questioned.

They got into the car and buckled their seatbelts.

Maggie shook her head. "Nah, Ima hang out wit you."

"Girl, it's two o'clock, we gonna hang out all day?" Arnell questioned.

"Uhh, yah." Maggie responded before bringing a spoonful of yogurt to her mouth. "Besides, I've been hangin' out wit Jay all week, I'm tired of him."

Arnell laughed.

"I feel like I haven't really gotten to hang wit you." Maggie stated. "You always locked in yo room."

Arnell nodded. She had been keeping to herself a lot lately.

"Let's go to the basketball court." Maggie suggested while turning the dial to the volume down.

"Why?"

"Cause I wanna watch some sweaty guys playin' ball." Maggie said.

"I'm tellin' Jay." Arnell joked.

"What? I don't want any of them." Maggie explained. "Ain't nothing wrong with lookin'."

"So you don't care if Jay looks?" Arnell asked Maggie.

"'Course not." She said. "But if he trynna break his neck to look at some ass, we gone have a problem."

Arnell just glared at Maggie. She knew she was lying through her teeth. No girl would be okay with their man looking at another female.

"What, Nell?" Maggie asked. "It doesn't bother me if he looks."

"Lie again."

"So we goin'?" Maggie asked again. Her curls were flying in the wind.

"Sure." Arnell agreed.

Maggie made her way to the court.

They sat on top of a table and watched the boys play while eating their yogurt.

Some guy was catcalling them from across the park. Since they didn't respond, he thought it was a good idea to walk over.

"Damn, baby-" He started up.

"I gotta nigga." Maggie cut him off.

"We can't be friends?" He asked.

Arnell rolled her eyes. She hated when boys said that. Knowing damn well that wasn't their intention.

"Hell not." Maggie shot back.

Arnell laughed. She knew it was going to catch on and they were going to say it all the time now.

He smacked his lips and looked at Arnell.

"What about you?" He asked.

"What about me?" She said. "I ain't interested either."

Arnell couldn't believe he was really trying to get at her right after trying to holler at Maggie.

"Man, y'all some stuck up bitches." He said walking off. He had his pants sagging so low they were damn near on the ground.

"That's fine." Maggie responded laughing.

Arnell saw Damitri's car pull up to the park. He was wearing some basketball shorts with no shirt. Arnell rolled her eyes. She should've known he was going to show up.

"There goes yo boy." Maggie said.

"That ain't my damn boy." Arnell said.

She was tired of everyone saying that. She sighed when she saw Damitri walking their way.

"What y'all doin' here?" He asked once he reached the girls.

Arnell didn't even look up at him. She just played with her yogurt.

"Um, we just watchin' some ball." Maggie answered.

"Nells, lemme get some." he said slapping her thigh.

She looked up at him. Her eyes were concentrated on his abs. Him not having a shirt on made her feel some type of way.

He must have saw her checking him out because his ass could not stop smirking. She quickly looked away.

She handed him the cup with out looking at him. She didn't want to give him the satisfaction.

He took a spoonful and brung it up to is mouth.

"This shit nasty." He told her.

Maggie busted out laughing. Arnell couldn't help but to do the same.

"Hmm." He said extending his arm to Arnell.

"I'll catch y'all after the game." He said walking away.

Damitri walked to the court and held his hands out to catch the ball. One of the guys passed it to him.

It was only twenty minutes in the game and Damitri's team was already up by eleven.

Dorian had the ball and passed it to Damitri. He stepped back and shot a three. The shot was so clean that  Arnell could hear the SWISH sound it made.

"WHOOO!" Damitri yelled with his right hand still in the shooting position.

Arnell smiled at him. He was being goofy as hell.

"I know you saw that!" He said looking back at Arnell.

She laughed and nodded.

POW! POW! POW!

Arnell jumped up in fear. It caught her off guard. She looked around the park to see where the sound was coming from.

"They shooting!" Someone yelled.

Arnell turned her attention to the parking lot. She saw a gang of guys coming out an all black car with guns shooting towards the court where Damitri was.

Her first reaction was to take cover. She got under the table and noticed that Maggie hadn't moved an inch. She was probably in shock.

"Get under here!" Arnell yelled at Maggie.

Maggie was still frozen in the same position. Bullets were still flying and they didn't have anyone's name on them. Finally, she came to her senses and hopped off of the table. In the process, she tripped over the seat and fell, hitting her head.

"Maggie!" Arnell cried out.

Maggie was knocked out cold on the ground next to the table.

"Fuck." Arnell winced.

She was crawling over to get Maggie but there was broken beer bottles all under the table. When she reached Maggie, she carefully pulled her underneath. Arnell's hands and knees were now bleeding. Shots were still flying and people were screaming.

The shooting finally stopped.

Damitri hid behind one of those big metal green boxes. He got up when he heard the car pull off.

"Arnell!" Damitri yelled. He couldn't see her because she was hiding underneath the table.

She just stayed in a ball with Maggie right next to her. He ran to where she was and dropped to his knees. He reached for her and pulled her from under the table.

"I'm fine." She said. "But Maggie, she hit her head." She told him.

"Shit." He cursed "Okay, let's get her up."

Arnell help get Maggie and Damitri picked her up and carried her.

Maggie groaned.

"Maggie?" Arnell said tapping her friend.

"You think we should get her to the hospital." He asked Arnell.

"No, I'm good." Maggie mumbled. She was holding onto her head.

"Meech," Dorian said jogging up to them.

"I'll talk to you later." he said repositioning Maggie in his arms. "Let me get them home"

Dorian nodded.

"Look, get everyone and meet at the spot in thirty minutes." Damitri ordered.

Dorian nodded again and ran to his bag that was sitting on the ground by the hoop.

"Where y'all park?" Damitri asked.

Arnell pointed at Maggie's mom's car. All the tires were flat from the bullets.

"Fuck." He said.

He walked back to the court up to some guy.

"Lemme borrow your car." He said.. "I'll bring it right back, I just wanna take these girls home."

The guy nodded and handed his keys over.

Damitri's car was shot up as well. Every car that was on the right side of the parking lot had nothing but bullet holes.

He quickly drove them to Arnell's house. He pulled up in the driveway so that Maggie wouldn't have to walk that far.

"Aight." He said putting the car in park. "Y'all get inside."

"I wanna stay with you." Arnell said trying to fight back her tears.

"You can't." He shook his head. "Look, lemme figure this shit out. If shit cool down later, I'll come get you." He told her.

Arnell had a feeling that whoever was shooting was out to get Damitri.

"Maggie, you good?" Damitri asked looking in the backseat.

"I'm fine." She nodded.

Damitri got out of the car and the girls did the same.

"Nells?"

She turned around to face him. Maggie was already in the house.

"Make sure she don't go to sleep." He told her. "She might have a concussion."

She nodded her head. He placed a kiss on her forehead before getting into his car and driving off.

"Why didn't Damitri just drive us in my moms car?" Maggie asked when Arnell got inside. She was holding a bag of peas on her head.

"It got shot up." Arnell told her.

"Fuckkk." Maggie cursed. "My mom is going to kill me."

Arnell shook her head. "Don't say that, she's gonna be happy that you didn't get seriously hurt."

"I'm so clumsy." Maggie said while Arnell patched her up.

"You think I need stitches?" She asked.

"No, it's just a small cut." Arnell explained. "If I thought you needed stitches, we would've gone to the hospital whether you liked it or not."

That comment made Maggie smile.

Once Arnell finished patching  up Maggie, and herself, she called Maggie's mom to let her know what happened.

"You might have a concussion so you can't go to sleep." Arnell said when she noticed Maggie trying to doze off.

Maggie groaned.

They were sitting in the living room waiting for Maggie's mom to come get her.

"Aye, y'all hear about that shooting at Lake View Park? There's cops everywhere." Jay said entering the house.

"What happened to y'all??" Anthony said walking in behind Jay.

"... We were at the park." Arnell said.

"What the fuck, are y'all okay?!"

"I'm fine, Maggie bumped her head, though." Arnell stated.

"What happened to yo hands and knees?" Anthony asked.

"There was glass under the table where me and Maggie were hiding." Arnell explained.

Jay went over to Maggie and held her in his arms.

"Maggie's mom is on her way to get her." Arnell informed Jay.

"Fuck, you okay babe?" Jay asked again.

"Yeah," she said leaning her head against him.

"What the fuck happened?!" Anthony asked.

It was just the two of them in the kitchen.

"I don't know, someone just started shootin'." Arnell shrugged.

There was a knock at the door and Arnell went to answer it.

"Oh my god." Maggie's mom said covering her mouth.

She was looking at Arnell's cuts and bruises. Arnell moved aside so she could come in.

"I'm okay, Mrs.Bell." Arnell assured her. "Maggie's in the living room."

Arnell guided her to where Maggie was.

"Come on, Maggie." Her mom said.

"Bye, Nell. I'll text you later." Maggie said as her mother helped her up.

Arnell nodded and hugged her friend. She watched as Maggie  left.

She didn't feel good so she decided to go to her room. Arnell tried to go to sleep but she couldn't. All she could do was cry.
