"Hurry up Arnell, we gone be late!"

"I'm coming!" She yelled back.

Arnell stuffed her lunch in her backpack and zipped it up. She jolted up and jogged to the door where her brother was waiting impatiently.

"Jeez." She mumbled while pushing pass him.

"Jeez nothing." Her brother shot back. "And if you want me to keep giving you rides, yo' ass better be ready on time."

Arnell just simply rolled her eyes. Anthony was her twin brother, but he swore he was four years older than her or something. More like four minutes.

She made her way to the passenger door and reached for the handle. She jerked it a few times to let her brother know it was locked.

"Girl you stupid?! Quit jerking my damn door handle and get ya ass in the back! I'm picking up Jay."

Arnell smacked her lips and reached for the back door handle which was open.

"Smack ya lips again and ya ass walking to school." Anthony fumed.

She didn't understand why he was so mad. She buckled her seatbelt and crossed her arms. Anthony started up the car and made his way to his best friends' house.

Five minutes later, they pulled up in front of Jay's house. Jay was already on the porch waiting. He didn't hear them pull up because he was too busy tapping away on his phone with his earphones lodged into his head.

"You see how he's already ready to go?" Anthony asked his sister.

Arnell shook her head and looked out the window. Anthony honked his horn causing Jay to look up. Jay smirked and headed to the car.

When Jay got into the car, he quickly dapped up Anthony. Anthony then put the car in reverse and began pulling out of the driveway.

They chatted for awhile before Jay realized Arnell was in the back. He turned his attention to her and smiled.

"Wassup Nelly?" He asked.

Arnell didn't say anything just simply smiled. It was quiet for a few seconds before Anthony butting in.

"Uhhh, you don't hear dis man talking to you?!"

Arnell smacked her lips and rolled her eyes.

"Damn, Ant." Jay laughed. "She good, she smiled at me."

"Nah, She back there with a damn attitude and she needa fix it. Forreal."

"You the one with the damn attitude." Arnell shot back. "You've been rude all morning and I didn't do shit to you."

"What?!" Anthony asked even though she said it loud in clear. "'Cause yo ass can get out and walk."

"Whatever."

"Keep talking, Nell. And yo ass gone be kicking dust all down Wiseman"

"Ant, leave that girl alone." Jay said trying his best to hold back his laugh.

The rest of the ride to school was quiet. When Anthony pulled up to school, Arnell could see her best friend in the parking lot. Anthony backed into a parking spot and put the car in park.

Arnell quickly gathered her things and hopped out the car. She began walking towards Jada who now was grinning ear to ear.

"You better be in the parking lot at 4:05 or you will get left!" Anthony called as Arnell walked away.

Arnell turned around and gave her brother a thumbs up. He shook his head and she continued to walk to her friend.

"Hey, Nell!" Her best friend greeted her.

They proceeded to make their way into the building. Arnell was skimming through the crowd of familiar faces. Summer seemed way too short, she was already back for her senior year.

Arnell was 17 years old with you 18th birthday just around the corner. She vowed to herself that she wasn't going to end up like her parents so she was a straight A student.

Arnell and Jada continued to walk down the hallway in the direction of the cafeteria. Headed their way was Mercedes. For some reason, she was always coming at Arnell sideways.

When they passed her, Mercedes purposely nudged Arnell causing her backpack to fall off her shoulder.

"Watch where you goin' BITCH." Mercedes called out trying to get attention.

It worked because everyone in the hallway was now staring at them.

Not today...

Arnell looked at her friend who was looking at her. Already on the first day of school a bitch was trying her. She picked up her backpack and slowly walked away leaving her friend behind.

Jada finally snapped back into reality and paced up to her friend.

"Girl, you smart for not saying nothing. She would have her brother up here in a minute." Jada said.

It was true. The only reason why Mercedes picked on people was because her brother basically ran half the city.

"I'm not scared of her raggedy ass brother." Arnell lied.

"Girl, all he has to do is snap his finger and boom, you gone."

"Shut up, Jada."

*

Arnell went the rest of the day without any run ins with Mercedes. When the bell rang she ran out to the parking lot. She was not trying to get left.

When she got outside she was Jada giggling with Anthony. She shook her head. Jada has always had a crush on Anthony and it kind of annoyed Arnell.

"What are you doing here?" Arnell smiled awkward.

"Oh, Anthony said he would give me a ride." Jada said smiling.

Arnell squinted her eyes at Anthony. He just simply shrugged. They all got in the car and headed to Jada's house.

"What's wrong?" Her brother asked. He noticed she was more quiet than usual.

She shook her head.

"Umm, Mercedes bum ass keeps fuckin' wit her." Jada replied for her.

Arnell shot an evil glance to the back seat. She didn't want Anthony all up in her business.

"What you do?" Anthony asked.

"I didn't do anything to that girl." She replied to her brother looking him up and down." She been out to get me since the eighth grade and you know it."

"Man, whatever. You betta leave her alone cause I damn sure ain't gone save yo ass when she call her brother on you." Anthony shot back.

Arnell was so over this conversation. She was tired of school already. She dozed off in the car but woke up when she felt the car stop. She was finally home.

Arnell sighed when she saw her sisters' boyfriends' car parked in the driveway. She gathered her things and got out. Arnell turned around when she noticed Anthony didn't get out of the car.

"Where you going?"

"Out" He replied pulling out of the driveway.

"To do what?"

"To mind my business miss me wit all dem questions."

Arnell smacked her lips and headed for the door. She heard Anthony pull off as she closed the door. It was quiet, which was unusual because her sister always had hell of people in the house.

She kicked of her shoes and went to find something to eat in the fridge. She sighed when she only saw leftovers. She shut the fridge and took out her phone to text her brother.

Arnell: Bring sumn to eat when you get back.

🐜: Damn, ain't nun @ tha house?

Arnell: If there was, I wouldn't be texting you.

🐜: Aight, I won't be back till later tho.

Arnell: bet.

When she looked up from her phone, her sisters' boyfriend was staring at her. She wondered how long he had been standing there. She gave him a feeble smile.

"Where's April?" She asked.

"She went to go pick up the kids and go grocery shopping." He replied licking his lips.

When he said 'the kids' he meant his kids. Arnell never understood why her sister took care of another woman's kids. By that she meant, fed them, clothed them, picked them up from daycare. All that while her boyfriend and their real mom didn't do shit.

"Where's Ant?" Thomas asked looking down Arnell's shirt.

"Uh, I don't even know." She replied looking in the direction of her bedroom. She knew if she made it there, she wouldn't have to deal with Thomas' perverted ass.

Thomas never actually touched her. He just flirted with her and said shit that made her feel uncomfortable. They stood there for awhile before Arnell built up enough courage to leave the room.

"Well, I'm gonna go to my room...." She trailed off.

She felt his eyes on her as she made her way passed him. When she reached her room, she locked her door and sighed.
