The drive was surprisingly long, Persephone's GPS led her to Manhatten, and to a large cluster of tall apartment buildings. The street was buzzing with people as they went about their business, casting glances at her as she walked up to the building.

This was apparently where Hades lived, a few blocks away from the Empire State Building. She walked up to the door and looked for his name before ringing the doorbell, unlike her own building, the name slots and doorbells still looked brand new and somehow sent a sophisticated 'I'm rich' vibe.

"Hello?" Hades spoke into the receiver and loud dog barks could be heard in the background.

"Uhm, it's Persephone." she noticed a bunch of people beginning to stare at her, she could've sworn that for a couple of them, who had smiled at her had razor-sharp teeth, but they were gone once she blinked.

"Oh, Seph, come on up." Hades sounded cheery as the door in front of her unlocked.

Walking up the stairs would've taken way too long, so she went by elevator, clicking on the capital 'P' at the top. The elevator was a boring grey and played metal music in a soft volume, the only soothing thing about it was the consistent lights flashing under the floor numbers as she continued to go up.

She had decided to wear a black, knee-length A-line dress that had small multi-coloured flowers sprinkled all over, sleeves stopping at her elbows and a medium-sized bow at the back.

The elevator let out a loud 'ding' as it slowed to a stop and the doors opened. In the hallway in front of her, there was only one door, with a gold door knock in the shape of medusa on the plain red door.

Persephone knocked on the door to hear loud barking coming from the other side.

After a couple of seconds, the door creaked open and Hades' face peaked through, "Hey Seph - you look beautiful -" he stared at her for a few seconds before seemingly snapping out of it -"come on in," he opened the door as the barking increased in volume, "sorry, they'll stop barking once they see who it is." he apologised as he let her in.

His apartment did not at all match her expectations, the only expensive-looking thing in the building had seemed to be the doorbells and name cards, but that paled in comparison to his penthouse.

Persephone had been anywhere this expensive-looking, there was a recurring black theme throughout but was balanced so it didn't look like a goth's home. There were paintings hung up on the wall, no doubt originals, in a gold frame, studded with jewels. From the front door, a living room was able to be seen, where a black leather couch that was framed with gold stood, three large black dogs standing or sitting on it. The dogs' coats were pitch black, like an empty abyss or the middle of a black hole, but one of them had very dark grey freckles of different sizes littering its body.

The three dogs most likely stood up to her chest area, the looked like a cross of a Doberman and a Rottweiler, with sharp ears that stood up. All of them jumped off of the couch and began approaching Persephone, lips pulled back to display their sharp teeth as they hunched their shoulders.

"Boys, no, she's a guest." Hades scolded them, but they ignored him, their only focus was the girl beside their master.

Instead of cowering as any sane person would, Persephone smiled and knelt down, the dogs taller than she was now, "Aww, you guys are so cute!" she squealed and Hades watched her with wide eyes, too stunned to do anything about the three massive dogs approaching her as they looked at her as if she was their next meal.

She reached forward with both of her hands and began scratching the side of two of the dog's heads. Instead of biting her hand off like they normally would have, the two dogs laid down and rolled onto their backs, exposing their tummies, their mouths opening as a big tongue lolled out. Persephone began scratching their bellies and the remaining dog whined, pushing its head underneath one of her preoccupied hands.

"I'm sorry." she scrunched her eyebrows together and alternated one of her hands between scratching one dog's head and the other's belly.

Hades watched with relief and astonishment, "I'm amazed they're letting you do that, they normally hate everyone besides me." he admitted.

"Everyone likes me." she smiled up at him cheekily.

They would've been there for hours, but Persephone stood up and faced Hades, "Your house is really nice."

"Really? Thank you, I designed it, I can give you a tour if you want," he offered, to which she enthusiastically nodded.

He gestured to a door to their left, "That was originally a guest bedroom, but I never have any guests, so I changed it into an office - " he then gestured to a door on the right - "That's a bathroom, a living room up ahead, as well as the kitchen." he walked forward as Persephone followed him, with the three dogs trailing her.

The corridor opened up into a large space, the entire opposite wall was covered in windows that overlooked the city. There was a large plasma tv on the wall in front of the leather couches, but between the tv and the couch was a small black ebony table that held a small clear vase with narcissuses in it. Further left was a black wire staircase that went up to a floor that hung over 1/3 of the room, the side on the outside fenced with glass.

On the far right, an open plan kitchen with an accompanying island table had a black and gold marble top. The fridge - which Persephone knew was the latest model, because she had been staring at it at last week wishing she had enough money to get it - was matching with the other appliances, surprise surprise, it was black. Above the island bench, three clear lightbulbs with golden flakes were lined up in a row, hanging. On the wall to her left was a black panel screen that seemed to be connected to the lights and everything. In between the living room and island, a glass table stood with three black leather chairs on each side, with only two plates and cutlery set up.

The oven was glowing orange as it cooked, one of the dogs walked up to the oven sniffing and began to lick the oven door.

"What's your dogs' names?" Persephone laughed.

"These two are Cer and Berus," he patted the two dogs' heads before gesturing to the dog at the oven, the one with grey freckles, "and that one's Spot."

"Spot?" Persephone grinned in disbelief, "That's adorable." she muttered shaking her head.

"Yeah, well the food's almost done, make yourself at home." he went towards the oven and began to get some stuff out.

Persephone went towards the couch and as soon as she sat down, the three dogs ran towards her and began sitting around her, on her and pawing her hands.

"What are we eating?"

"Homemade lasagna, I hope you're not vegetarian." He brought a tray from the oven.

"Nah, I feel like I should be, but I love meat too much." She smiled to herself and kissed Spot's head.

"What do you mean like you feel you should be vegetarian?" he began cutting the lasagna.

"Promise not to laugh?"

"On the River Styx."

"When my mum had left me outside the orphanage, she left me with a few vague memories of her and a letter in my hands. At the bottom of the letter, there was the sign of Demeter, and since she's the goddess of agriculture and stuff, I feel like I should feel guilty every time I eat meat... if that makes sense? But I still love meat, it's my favourite." Persephone cringed at how ridiculous she sounded and Cer licked the side of her face.

"That makes total sense," he assured her and put the lasagna tray on the dining table.

He pulled a chair out and gestured her towards it, and her heart began to race. She stood up from the chair and sat at the table, he pushed her chair in.

"So, if you don't mind me prying, what else did she write?" He sat on opposite to her, "Go ahead and take a piece."

She nodded and loaded her plate, "It's fine, it was really weird, she kept on mentioning a 'He' with a capital 'H'," Hades loaded his plate as well, "it's so confusing, it went on like, 'He's always loved you' and 'I trust them to not disclose anything to Him' and other stuff that just gave off the vibe that she didn't like him."

"Trust them not to disclose anything? Who's them? If you don't mind me asking." Hades attempted to look not as interested as he really was.

"She mentioned the Greek gods, Helios and Selene, crazy right?"

"Huh, the Sun God and the Moon Goddess." he slowly nodded.

"Yeah, so that's when I was first introduced to the Greek gods and why I always felt so connected to them, it's a connection to my mum, you know?"

"Yeah, that's fascinating."

"Yep, is this water?" she pointed to the glass in front of her that was probably not water because of the bubbles.

"Lemonade, I hope you don't mind."

"I love lemonade! It's my favourite drink, how did you know?" she laughed and looked down at her lap in embarrassment.

"I'm just telepathic with these types of things." he watched as she brushed aside a stray hair from her braided bun, "Did I say you looked beautiful?"

"It's the dress." she giggled.

"I can assure you it's not" he stared into her eyes, he never really liked the forest, but he was beginning to.

Persephone bit the inside of her cheek, trying not to smile as much as she wanted to.

And throughout the night, as she got to know him more and more, and as her heart still continued to race as if she was meeting him for the first time, she realised that she wasn't falling in love with him, she had already fallen, and she was hundreds of miles away from where she started. She may as well have fallen into Tartarus in love with him, but without the suffering and death part.
