solar clarke's pov:

"What's that thing?" Johnny grimaced, looking at a slimy creature crawling towards the main character of the film. As it came closer, the details of its rugged skin became clearer. Johnny tossed a handful of popcorn into his mouth and gushed: "Gross."

In my eyes the creature looked preposterous rather than scary or gross, but I kept my mouth shut and turned my focus back to the screen. There was probably a special place in hell waiting for me for enjoying the effects the movie had on Nathan.

He was sitting so close to me he might as well have been sitting on my lap and half the time his face was buried in the crook of my neck. He had discarded the pillow and was using me to shield himself from the movie instead. My arm was circled around his waist and occasionally I lifted my hand to brush his hair.

In all honesty, I'm not sure how much I spent time looking at the movie and not just obsessing over the guy curled up next to me. My heart was thundering in my chest and I was hyper aware of every single thing going on in my body, but it had more to do with him than the movie. And although the movie was crappy, I wished it would never end.

But then it did.

"Oh my sweet lord, have mercy on the single guys." Johnny threw his hands in the air as his face swept around the room. On our left Choni and Kieran were all tangled up together and without doubt finding even the horror movie as a turn on. On our right, on the floor, Nicholas was leaning on Anshil, while Anshil's hand rested on his knee. Nathan and I..

"S-sorry." Nathan sat up straight, staring at me with wide eyes like he was only then realizing how close he had been to me the past two hours. I gave him a lopsided grin and ruffled his hair before turning to look at Johnny.

"You're just jealous, because you don't have anyone to cuddle with." I pointed out, hugging Nathan closer, as if to declare: this one is mine.

"Damn right I am." Johnny vouched. Then he picked up his phone and started typing furiously. "You know what? I'm asking Sabine out, I'm so asking her out."

Then Johnny's chest fell and he sighed, staring at the phone. He muttered, more to himself: "I can't do that. What if she has a boyfriend?"

"Remember when I told Sol to stop pining after Nathan and just ask him out already?" Kieran narrowed his eyes at Johnny, who lifted his gaze from the phone and nodded slowly. I could feel Nathan's eyes on me and I pointedly looked away as an attempt to hide my embarrassment. "Well, now I'm telling you to do the same."

Then Kieran was quiet for a while, before turning to Johnny again, his face deadpan: "I mean Sabine. Don't ask Nathan out."

"Haha, very funny." Johnny gave him the finger, then gave in: "I'll do it."

We waited for Sabine's answer and as the minutes passed by, Johnny grew more and more agitated. Nicholas put on some random action movie, but no one was paying attention to it. We sat on the floor in a circle and talked in hushed voices.

"Does anyone want more soda?" Nathan offered, most likely to escape the elephant in the room. We were talking about colleges and scholarships, but in reality everyone was just waiting for Sabine's answer.

"You've been serving us all day, I'll get the drinks." Nicholas stood up and escaped into the kitchen before Nathan could tell him he didn't need to do that. Either Nicholas had truly changed or he wanted to make an impression on his boyfriend, but whatever the reason, he had become less of a prick. Maybe Nicholas was even growing on me.

Finally, quarter to eleven, Johnny's phone buzzed. He picked it up, only to let out a heavy sigh: "It's just mom. I better get —"

His phone buzzed again. This time it probably wasn't his mom, judging from the way he jumped up to his feet and threw his hands in the air. Then he wiggled his butt and gave us an embarrassing victory dance, before he finally boasted: "I'm going on a date with Sabine Duplantier tomorrow!"

"It wasn't so hard, was it?" Kieran grinned proudly and nudged Johnny's shoulder. Then he started to list things Johnny shouldn't do on that date: no butt wiggling, no eating fries if they had been thrown in your face, no tasteless sexual jokes, no jokes about sex altogether,.. and I helped him by adding a few things.

Then, past midnight, Kieran and Choni decided it was time to leave. Johnny was leaving with them, still grinning like a lottery winner. When Anshil and Nicholas started making their way to the front door as well, Nathan's eyebrows rose and he stared at them in bafflement.

"I'm staying over at Anshil's." Nicholas stated simply and didn’t even wait for Nathan's answer before turning back to face the open door.

"But.. Mom." Nathan furrowed his brows, blatantly worried.

"I won't tell, if you don't." Nicholas smirked and walked out of the door. Then he halted, glanced over his shoulder and wiggled his eyebrows: "Have fun, kids."

When they were gone, the house grew silent. Only the TV kept playing in the background. I circled my hands around Nathan's waist and kissed his forehead, trying to ease his troubled mind.

"Nicholas is a big boy, he can take care of himself." I reassured him, earning a muffled scoff from Nathan. The plan had been, as far as I knew, that all the four of us would stay the night, and now it was going to be just the two of us. "Is it okay, if I still stay?"

"Don't you dare to leave me alone in here after that movie."
