-Chapter 6-
A new threat
The alarm rang loud with hundreds of Space Marines running all over the place in preparation for the coming battle with those Chaos Space Marines. Calgar with the two Spartans did the same
<<So, what are those Chaos Space Marines anyway Calgar? >> asked Spartan-118 as they run to the armory to get suit up.
<< You are right; I should tell you before it begins. They were ones like us but fell victims to the flood infestation mutating their bodies and minds turning them into bloodthirsty monsters. Because of the gene seeds and the other implantations, they weren't fully transformed into Flood combat forms but kept their space marine appearance in the most part. So that's what we're dealing with right now, any more questions? >> That was all Calgar had to say for the moment and by his look and tone they realized it would be best to do what he says for they were just guests there. After that the three men entered an elevator which led them to the surface where the battlements of the first line of defense were.
As the two Spartans exited the entrance leading to the defense line, they saw that many more Space Marines had arrived there before them at their designated positions waiting for the attack and for Calgar's next orders. All wearing their blue battle armors with gold trim around their shoulder plates. Each one of them had a bolter rifle and a small sword hanging from their belts. Their preparedness made clear to the Spartans that preparation for possible threats was an every day's routine and these men were ready for anything.
Calgar exited last, clad in his battle armor stood even higher than the Spartans and every man present stood in awe as they gazed upon him. Seeing he had everyone's attention, Calgar began speaking:
<< Battle Brothers! Today the enemy is at our doorstep, the last bastion where humans live free. The last place where the spark of humanity's hope stands strong is in danger. Will you let it fall?! >> Having said that Calgar turned to his men for their reply and it was awesome as hundreds of Space Marines yelled <<No!>>.
<< Spartans, war is calling will you answer its call? >> asked Calgar.
<> they replied and so the defense wall ''transformed'' as turrets with heavy bolters and auto cannons emerged from their hidden locations and the men took their positions. The attack did not start immediately which resulted in morale issues amongst the men. It appeared that this long wait was in fact the first phase of the enemy's attacking plan. The field ahead of the defense line was a large plain ranging for, at least, five kilometers in all directions before ending under the slopes of three hillsides. For whoever coming against them, this was the perfect place to make a stand.
<< Do you hear that 118? >> said Spartan-116 as the sound of roaring beasts charging on their prey broke the long silence and the earth began shaking as if it was about to crack wide open and swallow them where they stood.
From the hilltops ahead huge armored forces appeared with Chaos Predator Main Battle Tanks, Demolisher Siege Tanks, Chaos Rhinos Troop Transports and other monstrous engines with armor painted in black, stakes with corpses nailed over and embellished in horrific symbols, hurling down in the hundreds with the sole purpose of killing every defender they could find. As the Chaos forces entered the kill zone, the defense's guns breathed fire that fell like rain upon them destroying many vehicles in the first minutes of the engagement.
Although Chaos casualties were high, their advance was still strong and many tanks were able to shoot at the wall dealing great damage on it. At this point the two Spartans could only stand and watch as the battle raged far beneath their feet. After a couple of hours the Chaos armored force began showing signs of wearing as their losses had piled up and so they called a retreat back to the cover of the far hills. Their withdrawal had caused them some extra lost tanks but had they remained their total extermination would only be a matter of minutes.
<< We did it! >> the men started yelling believing the fight was over. The Spartans and many of the high ranking Space Marines understood that this was indeed a major tactical victory but couldn't shake the feeling that the battle was far from over.
<< Something's off >> said Spartan-118 to his fellow Spartan.
<< Agreed, it was way too easy >> replied Spartan-116.
Then, in a matter of seconds the sky became black and as they looked up the only thing they could see were thousands of meteor-like objects coming down all over the place.
<< What the hell are those things?! >> said Spartan-116 as he turned to Calgar for an answer. Even in Calgar's face a hint of fear could be spotted; not for himself though but for the fate of his men because he was a leader who cared about his men than anything. He quickly dismissed any negative thought from his mind and ordered loud and clear:
<< Everybody! Inside the base now! >>
And so they did with the doors behind them locking down. Every Space Marine relied around their commander; those who wore no helmets had a look in their eyes which could easily be interpreted as nervousness for something they had never encounter before.
<> asked a Space Marine hoping to get an answer for the newly appeared menace from Calgar because he seemed to be the only one who knew what they would soon face. Calgar turned his head towards him and with his deep voice he replied:
<< Worse>>.
