Melody

The next couple of days I spent my lunches in the art room. Ms. Foster was surprised to see me at first, but gladly welcome me inside. Though Carson and Emma kept texting me to come back to the cafeteria, I figured it was better for everyone if I stayed away. That way, no one would be bothering them at their table. The art room was quieter anyways. Ms. Foster kept the door closed and played soft music to fill the silence. It was good. I had light lunches and drew in my sketchbook after finishing homework. Occasionally, Ms. Foster would ask me a question about fashion or art, but other than that it was quiet.

On Thursday, there was a knock on the door. Ms. Foster and I made eye contact, unsure of whom it could be. She smiled. "I'll get it," she whispered before getting up.

My back was to the door, hoping whoever it was wouldn't notice me in here.

"Hello, Ms. Foster."

My head snapped around to face the door, recognizing the voice.

"Hello," she replied.

"Is Melody here?" he asked.

"Hmm... is Melody here..." Ms. Foster looked into the room at me, and I nodded with a laugh. "Ah, yes. Come on in." She opened the door fully and Carson stepped into the room, closing the door behind him.

"Will you come back to the caf?" he asked walking over to me.

"And abandon my favourite teacher?" I asked, making Ms. Foster laugh as she sat back at her desk.

Carson slid into a chair next to me and rested his hands on the table. "Mellie, lunch is boring without you."

"That's the point," I whispered. "You won't have people bugging you about the rumours if I'm not there."

"People are over it by now," Carson said.

"Carson, they think I'm dating a sugar daddy who I call my uncle as a cover up. And some people are twisted enough to think I'm actually dating my uncle," I sighed. "It's bringing you all unneeded attention."

"Cora seems to miss it," Carson mumbled.

"What?"

"Never mind... the point is, we want you to come back."

"I like it here. It's peaceful," I replied.

"Fine... Ms. Foster?"

"Yes, doll?" she replied.

"Is it okay if I hang out here too?" Carson asked. My eyes widened.

"You don't have to!" I said the same time Ms. Foster said, "Of course."

"Thank you," he said to her. He looked at me and smiled. "I want to."

"Alright," I murmured, suddenly feeling shy. He'd probably think I was boring. "I just draw and do homework."

"Sounds good; I will too," Carson said, taking his biology textbook out of his bag.

"Okay," I said quietly, a faint smile on my lips.

"Okay then," Carson said with a grin. I glanced over at Ms. Foster who was pretending to read a magazine. By the way she bit back a smile, I knew she was failing miserably and watching us the whole time.

After school, Carson and I drove back to my house and parked outside. He turned to me and smiled. "I know things have been quite hectic lately, and I hope this doesn't add to your stress... but my parents are dying to meet you and were wondering if you'd come over for dinner tomorrow night?"

I had to have known this was coming at some point. Tomorrow would be a month since we were officially a couple. Dinner at his house with his parents was an obvious thing to do. They needed to meet the girl who was taking up all of his time.

Dinner.

I'd been eating a bit more regularly, though I'd still jog in the basement every other night. I'd be okay. Maybe. I mean, Carson would have probably warned them that I wouldn't eat a lot.

What if they didn't like me? What if I was too quiet? Or tried to overcompensate and was too loud? What if they hated my clothes? Or the fact that I wouldn't finish my food. Or what if I ate too much or too fast? Would the think I was a pig?

Oh, shoot. I've been quiet too long.

"That should be food – I mean fine. Good. Great!" I said, feeling my face heat.

Carson chuckled. "I know you're totally freaking out... but it'll be perfectly fine. I promise. If they like you even half as much as I do, it'd be a lot. And they will like you more than that."

I smiled at that. "I hope so."
