CHAPTER TWENTY.

[ xx. "painless"demise ]

CALUM CONTINUED TO weep over Melina's body. Partly finding it repulsing that he was holding onto a corpse. He repeatedly looked around through the darkness to find Liam and or Harriet. He heard their loud screams suffused with terror, but it all went quiet. A dead silence that held the last breaths of all of the victims.

He gasped for air and looked back down at Melina. He finally realized he was holding onto a dead girl. A human that took their last breath. Allowing all their muscles to relax in the most revolting way. Her jaw popping out of socket, the way she smelt like feces a few minutes after she passed, and how her body managed to pulsate blood all over Calum afterward.

Calum gagged, tilting his head towards the ceiling. He stretched his neck far away from the lifeless girl as possible. He started to move her off of him, shoving her body onto the ground he was sitting on. He lowered his head just to see her body roll onto the ground like garbage. He kept telling himself silently not to leave her, to carry her out of the house to give her a proper funeral. One decorated with poppies, since they were her favorite flower.

He stood up instantly, turning away from the girl. Tears started to sting his puffy and red eyes once more. If he got out alive, he didn't know how he would handle the death of Melina and his brother all at once. It wouldn't be the evil specters that would kill him, but it would only be himself.

"Come on, think," he muttered to himself as he brushed away his tears. Calum made himself walk away from Melina's corpse to find Liam and Harriet alive (hopefully). He turned around one last time to look at Melina, but she was gone.

Like a magic act, poof. She disappeared into air it seemed like. Calum jumped back and turned completely around towards where the girl once lied. Bloodied and dead. His heart started to pump faster and faster. Quickening its step. He felt the sweat start to trickle down the sides of his face the way the condensation on the mirror formed when he took a shower.

If only he could paint a smile onto his face the way he would a mirror.

His muscles tensed up as the eerie silence started to settle in. His heavy breathing filling his ears. It was pitch black. His widened his eyes as much as he was able to just to help him see. Calum kept looking around hurriedly, needing to know if anyone or anything was around.

"Liam?" Calum called out in a whisper. Shivers were sent down his spine, making him cringe. "Harriet?!"

"Calum?" A girl's voice was whispered into his ear, but echoed through the basement. He trembled at the sound. Sounding terrifyingly familiar to Melina's voice; almost exact.

"No." He shook his head as he went into a panic. He remembered the door Harriet and Liam came from. If he got to the stairs, he could meet with whoever is left upstairs. Possibly even managing to survive the morbid fiasco.

Calum took off into a sprint blindly. The only thing leading him was the memory of Liam and Harriet standing several feet away from him. He didn't know if it was the right direction, but he had to risk it. He already risked it all after all. Suddenly, his name was called again.

"Calum . . ?" The girl's voice was more defined as it still was a whisper. It sounded more like Melina, more distinct. He froze at the sound of her voice. He wanted to fall to the ground as he felt his legs become weak. His stomach turned drastically, almost feeling the vomit come up his throat.

She's dead, he thought silently to himself. Calum clenched his fists as if he was ready to fight. He didn't even know whom he was fighting, but he was prepared anyways. She can't be alive. I saw her fucking die. "Calum, where are you?" The soft, female voice swiftly whispered. It was so soft it was almost angelic.

Although, she sounded like Melina once again. Calum didn't want to believe she was alive. He couldn't wrap his mind around the possibility of her breathing again. Of her smiling again. Of her reading again. Of her doing anything besides decaying in the soil. "Liam?" He questioned with a low voice.

Calum was afraid of what would come from within the darkness. Afraid of something swallowing him whole, making him one with the shadows. "Where are you, Cal?" The feminine voice whispered again, but more stern. It wasn't angelic, it was as if it was an order. A question that needed to be answered.

Calum didn't respond. Instead, he took off running once again. He started to cry hysterically as he ran. Never he imagined he would be running from a specter that continued to call out his name. Never imagining he would have to watch his friend die painfully in front of his eyes.

He thought about stopping. Allowing whomever to come and swallow him whole. To take him to the darkness where he told himself that's where he belonged. So he wouldn't have to live with the image of of Melina bleeding out on his lap. Calum slowed his running down as he thought about letting it happen.

And maybe he would meet Melina on the other side. Just maybe.

Calum stopped completely with tears running down his face. His throat shut tightly, not allowing him to say a word. The only thing he managed to do was let out sobs that made him squat to the floor. He brought his hands up to his face and cried alone. The smell of rotting animal filling his nose, but he didn't care.

"Calum?" The feminine voice sung softly. He dropped his hands from his face and stared in front of him at absolutely nothing. At that point, he was angry. Vulnerable and emotional.

"Get out of my head!" Calum shouted angrily. He stood up abruptly and clenched his jaw tightly.

"Calum." The voice was added quickly and almost inaudible. It was right up near his ear. So close, he felt the hot breath on his ear. He turned to face where he heard the voice. In his vision, he saw a face.

It wasn't Melina's face, it was a teenage girl's. A girl that seemed around his age (maybe even younger by her more rounded face). Her face seemed normal and still intact. Except for the fact her eyeball and her nose was missing. Her nose looked like a reptile nose, showing only two small holes for nostrils and blood just to decorate it. Her missing eye exposed her eye socket.

It was as if her eye was easily scooped from her eye socket. Blood covered her pale face. Her bloodshot blue eye was staring at him. Her lips pursed together as if she was angered. Her eye staring at him gruesomely. She seemed like she was out for blood.

Within no time, he felt a blade slice through his skin on his thigh. He clutched his thigh immediately, wincing in pain. Calum felt the warm liquid pump out from the deep gaping wound. He let out a shriek as he leaned down, holding onto his burning thigh.

As he went down, another cut was made on his shoulder. It caused him to move upward, letting go of his thigh and reaching for his shoulder. He let out a cry as the wound instantly started to burn. Calum started to cry from the burning sensations coming from the cuts. He fell to the ground as he clutched onto his wounds.

He was so vulnerable, he didn't notice the demon swiftly moving around him. She grabbed his neck forcefully and moved him closer. Calum started to kick and scream like a child, but a child fighting for his life. She let go of him, but he was unable to move. A force kept him still on the ground. No matter how hard he moved, he couldn't fight back. He was stuck, only able to see the girl's horrifying face over him.

"Go away!" Calum screamed with horror. The girl got angry, her eyebrows furrowing. His muscles began to strain from trying to fight so hard. He watched as the girl's arm went to his face holding something in her fingertips. He tried to move his head, but he was unable to.

He felt a sharp piercing pain go under his lips. Feeling the sharp object exit from piercing all the way through the skin. Calum tried to scream from the overwhelming sharp pains, but nothing was able to come out. The needle started to go into his top lip, piercing through the skin with some thread attached.

Calum felt the taste of metal go into his mouth as she continued to thread his mouth. The needle piercing and go through his lips like water. He kept crying in pain silently. He wanted to desperately fight her. He wanted to make her stop, but he couldn't move nor talk. She pulled the thread slightly and it made his lips close tight.

His eyes pleaded with her to stop. Opening wide as he watched her. She looked over at him as she tied the thread off, her face showing no emotion. Calum then watched as moved towards his eyes. Getting closer to him. Calum started to blink repeatedly to try and make her stop from what she planned on doing. He had an idea of what she was going to do next, but tried to convince himself it wasn't correct.

Calum shut his eyes long enough for the demonic girl to start sewing. Pinching and piercing his bottom eyelid to shove the needle through. His eyes started to burn and water. He blinked in reflex, causing the needle to slam down onto his eyeball. He started to cry and try to move once more, but he stayed still. Allowing the girl to sew his eye shut even though it hurt and burned like Hell.

When she got to the other eye, Calum finally felt his body leaven. His body felt light as air. He pushed the girl off as she was in the middle of sewing the next eye shut. He sobbed hysterically. Unable to open his eye from the thread and the fear of his eyelids ripping.

His body started to weaken, so he knew he needed to act fact. He limped towards the stairs that he saw in the distance. Falling downward closer to the floor from his thigh giving out. He kept crawling, seeing with part of his one eye. Calum wanted to scream but was an impediment was in the way.

He reached the stairs and tried to come up them. His wounded shoulder scraping the edges of the stairs. Setting them on fire. Calum scooted and climbed using one arm and one leg. As he got up the stairs, a dark force was felt on his back. He was almost to safety before getting propelled down.

Falling down the concrete stairs. Busting his head open on one of the sharp edges. As he tumbled, his life flashed before his eyes. The idea of seeing his brother again made him calm. The idea of seeing Melina again made his pain stop for a millisecond. The way the stair hit the weakest part of his head. Killing him almost instantly.

As he took his last breath, he was unable to see anything. He was unable to scream or say a peep. Calum ended up on the cold ground. He lied on the cold ground Harriet, Liam, and Melina died on. He was just one of the many victims to lose their life in the basement.

Calum planned to take his own life ever since his brother's passing. He was never strong enough to go through it. He told himself his brother wouldn't want him to do it, so he never did. Calum thought dying would be painless and simple, easy to do, even. It wasn't easy for him; it was mortifying.
