CHAPTER ELEVEN.

[ xi. in between two worlds ]

MAURA AND DELANCY chose to be still and silent once they were surrounded by complete darkness. Maura couldn't believe she was at a great possibility of dying. She wanted to be home painting and drawing like she would do best. Working an part-time job to help support her single mother and her siblings. She wouldn't know what would happen if she died, how her mother and siblings would survive.

Delancy tilted her head down with closed eyes. She pictured herself talking with Delilah about life and what it meant. The maid was a better parent than her actual parents, who probably haven't realized she was gone. She wished she was in her bed, wished she was out with her so called "friends". Wished this all never happened.

Maura looked at Delancy through the darkness, seeing her staring at the ground. She wanted to say something to her, but was too afraid to. Delancy felt someone staring at her, so she opened her eyes and looked up. She looked over at Maura, who was staring at her with wide eyes. Tears were forming in the girl's eyes, becoming glossy. "I'm sorry," Delancy mouthed silently.

"Me too," Maura also mouthed, sniffling softly. The dirty blonde turned around, her back to the door.

"There's no reason to be quiet," Delancy whispered truthfully. Maura cringed at the noise cutting through the darkness. "Whatever is in here knows we're here, anyway." The brunette knew the girl was right, but didn't want to believe it. She squinted at the words on the door, fearing the worst.

"What do you think this means?" Maura gulped, which resulted in Delancy turning back around.

"I don't wanna know," the dirty blonde breathed out. Her heart was pounding, anticipating something drastic happening. "We have to scream to try and get someone's attention."

"Won't that give someone's attention who might kill us," Maura whispered, her breathing intensifying. Delancy bit her bottom lip knowing the girl was right, but they've already caught the wrong one's attention.

"They already know we're here," Delancy whispered, which sent shivers down Maura's spine. Delancy felt tears form in her eyes from the real truth she just spoken. She reached to touch the door knob hoping when she would turn it, the door would open. When she touched the doorknob, the knob was unexplainably scolding.

The fiery heat burnt the skin on Delancy's hand off. The doorknob was so hot, when she pulled back her hand, the flesh had melted off. Sharp, burning pains all rushed to her at once whenever she touched the knob. She let out a scream, tears instantly rolling down her face. Maura went into a panic, grabbing the girl's wrist. Delancy started shaking, uncontrollably sobbing from the pain. "It's okay," Maura breathed out, trying to see how badly she was wounded.

Delancy shook her head and she fell to the floor, bringing Maura down with her. The dirty blonde rested her back up against the wall as she held out her burning hand. "It hurts!" Delancy sobbed out with pain. Maura didn't know what to do. She sat beside her, trying to blow air on the exposed skin to try and cool it down. "Get it to stop!"

"I-I don't know how!" Maura said quickly, starting to panic even more. The brunette stood up, looking down on the girl who was sitting on the floor sobbing. "I'll see if there's a med kit in here."

"You can't," Delancy sobbed, clutching her wrist. The pain ridden girl shook her head, the burning sensation getting worse. "We-We don't know what's in here."

"I'm going to find out," Maura said in a serious tone. Delancy quickly gave up trying to convince the girl not to find a med kit. Instead, she tilted her head back against the wall praying the girl will safely find one. She started to feel blood run down her hand onto her other hand that was clutching her wrist.

Maura looked away as she couldn't handle anyone in pain, not even the popular girl whom she envied. She then started her trail out in the darkness. Using her hands to guide her way. She could hear Delancy's sobs fill the entire room, going through her body. "Just hold on, Delancy," Maura spoke out in a loud voice. "I'm trying!"

The further Maura stumbled into the room, the worse it started to smell. It smelt like something (or someone) was rotting. Maybe it was the heads of the animals? The brunette felt her way up to a couch where she sat down, needing to think. She felt her skin crawling with fear, not knowing where she was. She started to cough, the smell becoming unbearable. What's that smell? She thought to herself as she pinched her nose.

Time seemed to stand still as she trying to look for something to help aid Delancy. Fear made everything slow down, it seemed like. Maura got up off the couch and started to slowly walk around, hoping not to bump into anything. "Delancy! Can you look for a light-switch?" Maura coughed out, brushing the smell from out of her face.

Delancy didn't answer, but instead sniffle. She reached up towards the wall to try and feel for a light-switch. Maura could hear the girl's struggle to even move, so she knew she was at least trying. Maura has absolutely no idea where she was going. She was dependent on her sense of touch and hearing to help guide her blindly.

"I-I can't find one!" Delancy trembled as she fell back down. Her cries becoming softer. Maura bit down on the inside of her cheek once she heard her response.

"Dammit," she muttered under her breath. She kept her eyes wide, doing her hardest to try and see through the darkness.

"Maybe find a flash-!" Delancy was cut off by her own scream in reaction to someone (or something) pulling her forcefully by her leg. Her chest scraping against the wood floor. She let out a blood curdling scream with terror. She tried her best to cling onto anything to stop whoever or whatever was pulling her right leg. She managed to grab onto a piece of floorboard that was sticking up. "Maura!"

Maura heard the girl's scream for help, which made her turn her head towards the scream. "Delancy?! Are you okay?!" Maura asked quickly, sticking her arms out in front of her to try and keep moving. Delancy let out another scream for help, scaring Maura. "Delancy, answer me!"

"Help!" The dirty blonde pleaded loudly, scared for her life. She took her wounded hand and grabbed onto the floorboard as well for extra support. The pain of individual wood splinters jabbing into an exposed layer of skin made Delancy cry even more. She didn't know who was pulling her, but they obviously wanted her gone.

She saw her own life flash before her eyes. The image of her parents looking down disappointingly at her casket, Delilah sobbing uncontrollably, her friends pitying themselves. In her mind, maybe it would be better if she was dead. If she would just let go right then, nobody would have to worry about her anymore. She would be gone and there would be no more problems. No more disappointed looks. No more heartache.

"Lance, I'm coming!" The dirty blonde heard the girl cry out. Delancy looked into the darkness, hoping to see Maura come from out of it. She felt the grip tighten around her ankle, pulling even harder. She closed her eyes, overwhelmed from the fear and pain. However, the board began to crack in two slowly. Slowly torturing Delancy as she held on with her life.

Finally, the board broke in two.

In that moment, Delancy knew she had something to live for. She was wrong about her thoughts and needed to keep on living. "Help me!" She screamed with all her might, causing her lungs to burn. She looked for something else to grab onto desperately. Her body came to a door frame, which she grabbed onto for a split second before her fingertips slipping off. "Maura!" She screamed once last time before a door slamming in her face.

The brunette started to cry as she couldn't find her way back to Delancy at all. "Delancy, hold on!" Maura reasurred as she stumbled through the dark room. In a hurry, she accidentally tripped over something and fell, hitting the back off her head on something as she did. She fell to the ground, going in and out of consciousness. She stared up at the ceiling, her eyelids getting heavy.

"Delancy . . ?" Maura whispered as she finally closed her eyes, going unconscious.

Ingrid and Scout screamed to the tops of their lungs once they saw the horrific sight of the faceless girl. They knew it was Maura once they saw the full body. Scout hugged Ingrid to his chest, hiding her face from the gory sight. "We have to run!" Scout cried out as he squeezed his eyes tightly.

"Delancy . . ." Maura sung, tilting her head to the side. Ingrid let out another sob into his chest. Scout wanted to open his eyes, but he was too scared to do so.

"I think I'm gonna be sick," Scout trailed off. He lifted Ingrid off of him, holding her face. She sniffled, looking up at him. "We need to go." He opened his eyes, watching her nod.

"Delancy . . ." Maura sang once again. However, her voice was more higher pitched. Ingrid looked back at the girl for a moment, seeing how she was creepily standing there with flesh hanging off the sides of her head. Ingrid gagged, turning back around.

Both Ingrid and Scout took off running as they expected the worse. Ingrid's stomach was turning, threatening to throw up all of her previous food. They ran out of the hallway, seeing Liam and Layla on the floor still on the phone. "There's something wrong with Maura," Ingrid trembled as she ran over to the two. Scout kept looking behind him as he followed, seeing nothing.

"Is she okay?!" Layla asked worriedly as she stood up. Scout shook his head, his heart racing.

"Guys' . . ." Liam shivered in a high pitched voice, looking past Scout and Ingrid. They all turned around and saw Maura standing at the edge of the hallway, looking back at them with her bulging eyes. Layla screamed a blood curdling scream, covering her mouth in horror.

"Is everything okay?!" They heard Jonah asked panicky over the phone.

"What the fuck is wrong with her face?!" Liam cried out as his eyes went wide and his heart dropping.

"Delancy . . ." Maura sang again, that time in a much higher voice.

"She keeps repeating her name! Why the fuck is she repeating her name?!" Scout yelled out as he started to back away. Jonah started to panic as well and he wasn't even there. He stared at his lap, his eyes tracing back and forth.

"You need to kill her!" Jonah yelled quickly back.

"What?!" Layla yelled back, tears running down her face.

"Delancy . . ?" Maura sang, but in a question. She tilted her head to the side in a scary manner.

"She's stuck in between worlds, y-you need to kill her before she becomes dangerous," Jonah explained in a serious tone, turning back to his laptop. Liam started to shake, crying. "She's vulnerable to evil spirits this way. She's already dead, but she's not. You have to kill her."

"Delancy . . ." Maura trailed off, but not in a singing tone. In more of a serious tone of voice.

"We can't kill her, sh-she's my best friend," Layla sobbed, unable to look at the mangled girl. Liam was silent, thinking of how many horrible possibilities there are if she stays "alive".

"You have to! She's already dead, anyway!" Jonah explained in a begging tone.

"Delancy . . ." Maura trailed off. Her voice was more deeper and more serious.

"We have to do fucking something," Scout gasped for air, his airway tightening due to a panic attack. Liam looked around for something useful, something deadly. Unexpectedly, Maura started to walk closer slowly. She reached up and ripped the hanging flesh off of her face, peeling back more skin as she did so.

     She didn't even flinch.

"Someone do something!" Ingrid begged with a cry. Liam sat his phone down on the ground and stood up.

"Are you guys' okay?!" They heard Jonah yell with concern over the phone. Liam didn't answer. Instead, he stood up and faced the girl with emotionless eyes. He had no more tears running down his face, his fear was being smothered by the adrenaline rushing through his veins. He walked over to the corner of the room and grabbed a dusty beer bottle, smashing it against the wall.

He accidentally cut his finger when he did so, but he liked the pain. He gripped onto the skinner part of the bottle and walked back over to the group. "Liam, what're you doing?!" Layla asked curiously, her chest going up and down quickly. Liam ignored her, his focus on the horrific girl in front of him.

"Kill her!" Scout urged, being nauseous. Layla shook her head, refusing.

"Don't you kill her!" Layla demanded with a sniffle.

"Delancy . . ." Maura sang, showing a smile. Blood covered her white teeth. Her lips were gone, so it showed her gums and her bloody teeth. Liam heard Ingrid throw up in the corner, which didn't bother him any. As she inched closer to him, he did the unexpected.

Liam brought his hand up holding the broken glass and rammed it into Maura's neck. They all gasped, besides Liam, who was looking dead into her eyes. Maura froze in front of him as he held the glass bottle into her neck. He started to apply pressure, ramming it further into her neck. Blood splattered onto his hand and his arm, which frightened him.

"No!" Layla screamed loudly, covering her face in horror. Maura started to back away, which made Liam do the same. She briefly touched the bottle that was sticking out of her neck. She looked at Layla who was sobbing and then back at Liam, who just snapped back into reality.

"She's gone," Maura said as she gasped for air. Right after, Maura fell onto the ground and landed on her back. She wasn't moving nor breathing. They all concluded that she was dead as well.

"H-H-How could you?!" Layla spat as she pointed her finger at Liam. He was speechless, he had no explanation. "You are a murderer!" She started to cry again, which made Liam's face soften.

He didn't realize he did that till Maura started to back away from him. He didn't know what came over him. He started to fear himself, but he was also grateful they weren't in danger. He watched as Layla was crying, starting to breakdown. Liam got the courage to walk over to her and embrace her in a hug. He became surprised when Layla didn't refuse the hug, but instead fell into his arms.

"Is everyone okay?!" Jonah asked, holding the phone closer to his face. He looked at his clock, noticing it was two in the morning.

Scout walked over and picked up the phone, shaking. "No, but we're alive," he spoke softly into the phone.

"Why was . . ." Ingrid paused, remembering what happened just a few moments ago, "why was she repeating Delancy's name?" The blonde wiped her mouth off with her sleeve.

"I don't study much of this, but I read that spirits trapped in between worlds usually repeat their last words when they haven't finished their business on Earth," Jonah spoke out nervously. Ingrid's heart fell to her stomach, wanting to pass out.

"Maura's final . . . final words were 'she's gone'," Scout added, sticking his hand into his pocket. "What does that mean?"

"Oh no . . ." Jonah trailed off, making the two nervous.

"Talk to me, Kelly," Scout urged hurriedly, snapping his fingers. Ingrid watched him snap his fingers, still not laughing.

"Maura finished her business. I-I think she needed to know what happened to Delancy." Jonah rubbed his forehead, unable to picture their situation. "I think Delancy is gone too."
