The car ride was relatively silent. The country rock was playing softly on the radio, but other than that, all that I could hear was the steady sound of our breathing and the rain pattering on the car. I had my head rested against my fist and leaning on the window. Nate's eyes were fixed straight ahead on the road. He seemed very focused. A bit too focused, even for this sort of weather.

After a few minutes of this behavior, I finally spoke up. "Hey," I began. "Are you alright?"

He glanced quickly over at me and then darted his vision right back to the road. "Yeah," he answered quickly. "Why wouldn't I be?"

I shrugged and brought my eyes back to looking out of the window and the grey buildings passing us by. "I don't know. There's a lot of things."

"Hey," he said comfortingly. "I have nothing to be nervous about. You're the one who went through everything these past few months. It didn't end with the trial. There was still so much that you did."

"I just wanted to forget," I confessed. "But no one let me do that. And now, every day, every second of my life, I am still reminded of him, because the people in my life have made it a point to make sure that I don't forget. But what does it matter."

"It doesn't," Nate insisted. "They should just stop. Luther is locked up now. He's been in that facility now for 7 months without any sort of fuss, or that we know of at least. He's made no attempt to contact you, no attempt to escape. He's out of our lives forever."

We arrived in front of a small, locally owned cafe. Nate helped me out of his truck and held up an umbrella for both of us while we crossed the street and walked into the coffee shop. I removed my scarf and my gloves while he unzipped his jacket. We each ordered our own drink and sat down at a small table next to the window facing towards the street and looking out at the world. We both just sat there in quiet for a minute, taking sips of our beverages, thinking to ourselves. The two of us didn't have to be talking, or touching to enjoy each other's company any more. We could just simply be near each other, and that was all that we needed.

After a few minutes, I leaned forward and set my drink down on the table, still gripping it in my hands. His attention caught, Nate brought his attention away from the window and to me as he leaned to me as well.

"Nate," I began. "Don't think that I'm crazy for telling you this..." I began.

He raised a brow. "I probably won't; I've been around."

I released a small chuckled before proceeding. "I have this really, really bad feeling...I've had it for a long time."

I could sense him tense up a bit. "Um...about what?" he asked nervously, looking to the side and taking a drink of his laté.

"About...Luther," I admitted. "I have this feeling that he's gonna come back. That I'm going to see him any time now, just waiting for me somewhere, to ambush me."

Strangely, I could feel his tension ease a bit. "Oh," he said lightly, tilting his head a little. "Why do you think that?"

I shrugged. "I mean, this is Luther we're talking about here. He's not your average 18 year old boy. He's very...cunning. He knows how to get his way."

He lowered his eye lids at me and gave me a look that told me I was being absurd. "Come on, Ava. He's locked up in a high security mental hospital for the criminally insane. It's got literally some of the best security in the country there. There is no way that Luther is going to escape, no matter how intelligent we think that he is."

I looked out the window again. "As I said, I don't know where this feeling is coming from."

"Well ignore it," he said firmly. I creased my eye brows and looked at him with a surprised look on my face.

"Why are you being hostile?" I asked.

He pursed his lips. "I'm not being-!" he began to shout. Some people turned their heads and looked at us. Nate let out a breath through his nose and lowered his voice. "I'm not being hostile."

I furrowed my eyebrows even further. "What's wrong with you today? You're not yourself."

He rolled his eyes and leaned back, almost falling out of his chair. He corrected himself at the last second then angrily rose from his seat. "Let's go," he said, walking past me and grabbing my wrist.

Jerked out of my chair and almost spilling my drink, he rushed me out of the cafe and back to his car. "Seriously, what the hell?" I asked him incredulously. He took off before I could even buckle my seatbelt.

He wiped some sweat from his forehead and stared ahead at the road. "It's nothing. I just don't feel that good."

"Where are we going?" I asked monotone, looking out the window.

"My house. We'll watch a movie or something."

"Sure," I said. "As long as you calm the hell down."

"Fine," he evinced. "I promise."

After several more minutes of awkward silence, we arrived at Nate's house at the end of a forest trail, surrounded by the great evergreens. The rain had stopped by this time, so we exited the car without opening up the umbrella, and walked through the muddy puddles up to his front porch. Upon entering his house, I noticed a slight, but chilly draft. I brought my hands up to my arms and rubbed them.

"Why is it so cold in here?" I asked him, setting my purse down on the table.

"Sorry," he said bluntly, making his way upstairs. "I left my window open. Why don't you pick out a movie and get it started?"

"Okay..." I agreed with a suspicious manner behind my voice. Why would he leave his bedroom window open when it was cold and rainy outside?

Picking out some old Disney movie, the two of us sat down on the couch together and watched it in silence without talking or laughing. The two of us just sat there together, Nate holding me in his arms, and me feeling content and protected.

Before long, the movie had ended, and I was ready to go home. He brought me back to my house and walked me up to the door. Before I walked in, he said something to me.

"Hey, I'm sorry about earlier. I don't know what's wrong with me."

"It's fine," I said quickly, just wanting to drop the matter and go inside to get away from him. I opened the door and took a step inside. He grabbed my wrist. I twisted around and looked him in the eyes.

"I love you," he said sternly.

I stared blankly back at him. "You too." I stepped inside and shut the door behind me, immediately making my way to the kitchen so he couldn't see me through the glass windows on the door.

My mother still wasn't home yet, so I decided to take my laptop down to the living room and do a little online shopping. There was this really cute overcoat I wanted for this fall, and I had finally saved up enough money for it. I went to the check out page, where it asked for my card number and such. I got up and searched for my purse to get my card out of, but it was no where in sight. Frantically looking, I tried recalling the last place that I had it. The cafe? No, I brought my purse back with me. Nate's car? No, his house.

I groaned a little. I really didn't want to go back to his house, but I really didn't have much of a choice. There were other things in that purse that I needed as well. Reluctantly going out side, I pulled my keys out of my coat pocket and started up my car.

I arrived at Nate's house once again, and walked inside without even knocking. My purse was sitting on the table. Right where I left it. I was about to leave, but I thought that I might as well go upstairs to let Nate know that I had come to retrieve my bag.

I stealthily walked up the stairs and opened up his bedroom door. Upon opening it, my jaw dropped along with my purse. Seeing that he had been caught in the act, he hid something behind his back suddenly.

"What are you doing here?" he screamed at me.

"I was forgot my purse..." I whispered, picking it up off of the floor. Suddenly, visions came flooding back into my mind. Visions of that Halloween night, and the events that took place in this bedroom. I was standing where I stood now, in the doorway, looking on to some horrific scene. I remember seeing broken glass and the stain of something on the carpet surrounding it. At the time, I didn't know what it was. Then it all made sense.

"You drink?"

"It's none of your business."

"You were drunk on our date, weren't you?" I shouted. "That's why you were acting like such an ass!"

"SHUT UP!" he screamed. I flinched and grabbed the doorframe. His window was open again. Was that his way of trying to sober up?

"I can't believe you right now," I said dully. "I have to go."

His expression suddenly softened as he lunged forward and chased after me as I went down the stairs. "Ava, wait!" he called, slurring his words together. He barely made it out of his room before he stumbled over. I ran out of the house. I could hear him shouting and crying as I left. Tears filled and pooled out of my eyes as I started my car back up and drive back to my house.

Entering back into my home, I took my laptop and ran up to my room. I hurled myself into my bed and soaked the tears into my pillow. Everything went downhill from there.
