"are you sure you don't want me to go in there with you?"
y/n parked the car on the dirt road and looked over at a sarah cameron who was covered in worry.
"i'm sure. i'll be quick."
"i cannot believe rafe asked you to do this."
y/n smiled at sarah's tone of disapproval and shook her own head.
"we need some green for the party too, you know?"
sarah cameron rolled her eyes,
giving y/n the cue to up and leave before she began a tangent about substance abuse.
she thought about sarah's warnings as she stood on the front porch of barry's home,
the only decent and reliable drug dealer this town had.

you'll fry your brain.
it'll stunt your growth.
it's a gateway drug.

none of these things ever bothered y/n as much as they might another.
y/n only smoked on occasion and rarely overdid it.
she mastered the art of self control;
she had it all in the palm of her hand.
"don't you know shop closes at ten?"
barry groaned as he opened the door.
"that's a little early. surprised you have a bedtime."
y/n smiled at barry,
despite his rough exterior,
and handed him the cash rafe had passed along.
"country club?"
he asked with raised eyebrows,
eyeing at the money in her hand then back up at her.
"yeah."
"should've known. i was wondering what a girl like you was doing down in these parts. come in."
barry opened the door a little wider for her to step in.
out of habit,
she turned around to lay eyes on sarah cameron who was rigid in the car,
staring at her with wide eyes.
"just a second,"
y/n mouthed to her with an index finger held up in signal to wait then stepped into barry's home.
"a girl like me?"
y/n continued,
examining the place around her while he made himself busy with packaging.
"it's what i said, isn't it?"
"i was asking you to elaborate, idiot."
barry slowly turned around to face y/n with a look of indignation.
she feared she had crossed the line;
regret began settling inside of her.
and just as she began imagining the worst,
barry exhaled a laugh then pointed his finger at her.
"you kooks...must be something in your water. always wanting the things you shouldn't want just because someone told you no."
y/n stood silent in wait for her racing heart to settle again.
when barry came up to her,
placing the bags she'd come for into her hands,
he held her a gaze a little longer and said,
"a girl like you: beautiful and, well, a kook."
"mhm. i live right behind you, barry. i'm every bit of cut as you are."
y/n began to leave,
but not without tossing him a simple smile that made him stand still in awe.
when she climbed into the car,
preparing for their departure,
sarah cameron took notice of her timid expression and began,
"are you okay? do-do i need to-"
"need to relax? yes, sarah, you do."
y/n turned the car on and gave sarah a teasing smile to which she returned.
the drive home had improved sarah cameron's mood tremendously,
meaning the music was loud and their laughs were true.
when they arrived to the party,
rafe took his requested means of entertainment with a thanks.
"the pleasure was all mine,"
y/n said with a laugh.
if only they knew how serious she was.
***
barry had been leaning over the counter,
fumbling with the contents in his bag in an attempt to find the right question to ask rafe when he was interrupted,
"what's taking so long?"
"find patience, country club,"
barry retorted then turned around to lean himself back against the counter.
"that girl you sent here the other day...what's her name?"
"y/n? y/n l/n?"
"huh...right."
barry threw rafe the bags he traveled here for then waited for his departure.
"you're into her?"
rafe asked with a laugh of shock.
"all that coke must be going to your head. no, dumbass. she just said something that made me wonder."
"well...what'd she say?"
barry narrowed his eyes at rafe and began to wonder if y/n was leading a double life;
a faux persona created for the appeal of rich friends, hiding the true, poor nature of her being.
or,
maybe it was the other way around.
achieving the aesthetic of the cut to seem appealing to him,
but was pent up in a three story mansion with maids to call her own.
barry's head was beginning to hurt from thinking about it.
could he see it in her?
tattered clothes, grease stains on her cheek, bruised knuckles?
there was a sort of scent that travelled with the cut:
a soft scent of inner torture.
but y/n seemed to be right down the middle of this line that divided the island.
so where did she come from?
"did your words quit working?"
rafe asked,
drawing barry from his wild thoughts.
"do you know where she lives?"
"what? no, creep. she's sarah's friend, not mine."
"but she-she lives on your side, right?"
rafe sat back against the couch to allow himself a moment to think.
barry forced himself to ignore the look of inquiry on rafe's face.
"i don't know. never thought about it..."
so she's as every bit of an enigma to them as she is to me.
"right."
***
y/n couldn't figure out why barry's image was still coming into her memory.
every time she closed her eyes,
there he stood;
rugged and dangerous but still so invigorating.
"hey, honey, there's someone at the door for you."
y/n turned over in her bed to see her mother standing before her,
eyes blue from the lack of sleep.
"okay. thank you."
y/n gave her mothers cheek a kiss as she passed.
the front porch was currently holding sarah cameron.
"hey, sarah."
"guess what rafe just told me."
"what?"
sarah stepped closer into y/n's ear,
whispering,
"he was asking about you."
was he thinking about her just as much?
had their first impressions of one another been the catalyst to an alchemy that could never be understood?
"what? why?"
"i don't know. he said that...that you said something to him? did you insult him?"
y/n snickered and shook her head.
"no, sarah. he's just curious because we've never actually met. don't worry."
"are you sure?"
"positive."
but how could y/n be sure of anything these days?
***
it had been weeks since rafe's last party,
which meant it had been weeks since y/n and barry last saw one another.
though they still thought of each other frequently,
just entertaining the possibilities of what could have been,
they carried on with their day-to-day activities and pretended as though their hearts did not seek out the attention of the other.
"hey, you,"
rafe began with a tune as y/n entered the cameron household.
she rolled her eyes at this,
seeing past his charade.
"what do you want?"
"can you make a certain delivery for me?"
y/n felt her heart stutter.
"barry?"
"mhm."
the girl held her palm out and said,
"fine."
though she feigned annoyance with his request,
y/n knew she just wanted an excuse to see him.
and like weeks prior,
y/n arrived and knocked to see barry on the other side.
his smile was instant,
though she tried her hardest to ignore it.
"well, look who it is."
"party night,"
she explained with a dramatic sigh.
barry nodded but was quick to ask,
"no invite?"
"hey, nobody's stopping you from going."
the two smiled at one another before y/n handed him the money.
"if you're down, i'll give you a ride there."
"nah, not my scene. appreciate it anyways."
"so....what is your scene?"
barry threw her a grin then shrugged.
"good question."
"....right."
"so, you really live around here?"
y/n was resting against the arm of his couch when he asked.
she tilted her head in an adoring curiosity then said,
"maybe. still looking for me?"
barry laughed with his head low then picked it up with a a smile thrown at y/n.
"i should've known better than to trust him to keep quiet about it. i was curious. don't let it get to you."
y/n threw her hands up in mock surrender.
"nope, not getting to me at all."
"stop smiling at me like that."
"like what?"
she asked in a teasing tone,
her smile wide and bright.
barry was trying his hardest to bury his own smile but with the view in front of him,
he wasn't sure how long he'd be able to keep the act up.
"like that."
"would you prefer i frown at you then?"
y/n forced her lips downward into a frown to sell her image.
barry rolled his eyes then laid the contents in her hand.
she couldn't help but notice how his hands lingered there,
his skin brushing against her own and leaving a trail of heat.
"i don't know. either way, you're...alluring,"
he whispered with a gentle grin.
y/n's mocking look fell to be replaced with one of wonderment.
her skin was becoming engulfed into a heat that could only be produced by an intimidating stare owned by barry.
"r-right."
"i'll see you around, y/n."
barry stepped back and gave her one last smile that could last her through the night.
when she was in the car on the way to rafe's party,
she felt her limbs continue to tremble and her skin still flushed.
y/n once prided herself on the grasp of self control she had.
but with the influence of barry and his bewitching grin,
that damn grin,
she could feel it slipping through her fingers.

"what is he doing here?"
y/n had been staring at the bottom of her cup when sarah asked.
she wasn't listening though,
her mind was too distracted with the intoxicating memory of barry's touch to her.
"look!"
with the tug of her arm,
y/n looked up to see barry strolling through the crowd.
"oh, my god."
"did you invite him?"
"i...i did, yeah."
as the words left her mouth,
barry's eyes locked with hers and seemingly brightened.
when he was finally in front of her,
his lips were spread into that boyish grin he owned.
"house call,"
he informed her,
placing his index and middle finger beneath her chin and lifting it to be closed.
she hid her face that was burning hot.
"i just bought stuff from you,"
she forced herself to say.
"seems you forgot a couple things."
"seems like it."
y/n filled two cups with the strongest liquid she could find and handed him the extra cup.
"maybe tonight will change your mind and it'll become your scene after all."
barry slowly sipped his drink,
leaving y/n to watch in a fixed stupor as his adam's  apple moved up then down.
"maybe it will."
the rest of the night continued in a blur.
throughout y/n's continual drinking,
she ended up losing barry in the crowd.
though she could tell by the static in the air that seemed to follow the two that he was still around.
when she stumbled into the kitchen after a while of dancing,
she winced at her sore heels and looked to see blisters forming.
"you're pretty entertaining."
y/n turned to see barry walking into the kitchen with a suave manner.
she smiled as he appeared next to her.
"i try, thank you."
y/n then held onto his forearm to balance herself and fix her shoe.
"i think i should call it a night,"
she admitted in a sigh.
barry laughed.
"you should've called it a night five drinks ago."
"mm, true. take me home, will you?"
y/n looked up to him with bloodshot eyes that still held a trace of iridescent beauty that could never be hidden.
how could he say no when he was beneath such a sight?
"yeah, yeah. come on."
barry slung an arm around his shoulder and helped heave y/n to the car due to her numb legs barely able to support her.
she tried to fight the lazy smile begging to be pulled against her lips at this feeling of their close proximity,
but she ultimately lost that battle.
barry had hardly touched a drink since y/n offered him one.
he was surprised and wondered when he'd learned to do that;
attend a party without drinking much.
then he looked over to see y/n resting her eyes and still smiling.
he realized his focus on her the entire night had drawn away from any substances he might've dabbled in.
"barry?"
"what's up?"
y/n fell silent,
gathering her muddled thoughts,
then said,
"thank you."
"yeah...yeah, for sure."
the rest of the car ride fell silent.
but it was the kind of silence barry could understand and, quite honestly, grow accustomed to.
it was comfortable and full of a comfort he'd never known existed.
when they arrived to y/n's house,
barry was quite surprised.
after all these years,
she truly did live right behind him;
his neighbor.
how could he have grown so blind when an ethereal being such as y/n lived so closely?
"help me in?"
"just don't puke on my shoes."
y/n giggled and took barry's hand that was extended to help her out of the car.
"no promises."
barry carefully but surely got y/n inside to her room.
when he entered and laid her down to her bed,
he couldn't stop himself from looking around in amazement.
this was y/n.
not the version he created to understand her,
not the rich pretend kook,
not a poor girl who settled for what she could take.
this was her.
the girl who liked all kinds of music;
cds, vinyls, headphones, and posters of her favorite artist littered the room.
the girl who romanticized life as it was.
the girl who studied for further education.
barry couldn't believe such authenticity.
"you can stop gaping now,"
y/n whispered,
using her fingers to close his jaw like he'd done to her just hours prior.
he watched her grin up at him.
"you're interesting...you know that?"
"i do now."
she pulled onto his arm and brought him into the empty space on her bed.
before he had time to object,
if he even wanted to,
y/n had rested her tired head against his chest and muttered,
"goodnight."
what was barry to do?
ruin the one perfect moment life had finally gifted him?
the idea wasn't even plausible.
barry threw the blanket over the chilled girl and whispered back,
"goodnight."
***
when barry woke up the next morning,
he was met with the sounds of running water and gentle hum that must belong to the angel herself.
using this time as wisely as possible,
barry lifted himself from the bed and trailed home where he was free to ready himself just the same.
the whole time he was away,
all he could think of was her lingering warmth and how much he already craved it.
the horrible truth to addictive personality:
it only takes one time.
but finally,
they met again at the front porch of y/n's house.
barry stopped short,
looking at the girl and her prepossessing nature,
wondering what on earth had led her to him.
he couldn't possibly entertain the thought of a relationship with y/n.
what they had was strictly business;
supplier and buyer.
y/n had a future outside of the obx.
y/n had a knowledge extending beyond barry's most simple thoughts.
y/n deserved everything that he could not give.
what happened last night had been a choice of drunken matter,
he decided.
y/n eyed him from afar.
didn't he know?
didn't their time last night prove that she was stupidly, but somehow endlessly, in love with him?
didn't he see her eyes the first night they met and how they twinkled beneath his gaze?
she had been a client for years,
a neighbor for even longer,
yet they had never acknowledged the presence of one another until that fateful night.
why was he standing still?
why wasn't he confessing his love like y/n was so close to doing?
something was wrong.
this made her heart skip several beats.
"are you okay?"
she finally managed to ask.
"what the hell was that last night, y/n?"
y/n fumbled with her words but finally said,
"it was...it was nice, no?"
"look what you're doing to me,"
he said in a humorless laugh,
running a frustrated hand through his hair.
y/n took several steps closer to him until they were finally inches away from one another.
"y/n...if you step closer i don't think i'll be able to walk away again...please, don't do this to me."
"what am i doing to you, barry?"
"you're making me fall for you."
y/n took one step closer.
she was now close enough to lay a hand flat to his chest.
"what's wrong with that?"
his breath hitched under such closeness.
he could smell the remnants of her perfume from here;
he reveled in it.
"i'm just your drug dealer, y/n."
"then deal me something more,"
she whispered with her lips brushing his.
fervor filled his veins and made him run numb.
"you know what they say. love is life's greatest drug."
all the convincing in the world would never make barry think he deserved y/n.
but as they finally closed the space between them to indulge in a kiss so vehement,
making their blood warm with a foreign kind of ecstasy,
he knew he would never stop working to be deserving of y/n l/n.
