Mr. Sengupta passed away. The doctor declared heart attack to be the reason of his decease in the certificate. The apartment of the first floor of Tuli's parental house was looking gloomy. Most of the neighbours were gathered at the living room and out at the doorway. Some of relatives those lived close by were there including Renuka with her parents and Tuli's mama-mami. Her mami was sitting beside her mother, sobbing and rubbing the back of Mrs. Sengupta a little in order to comfort her. Mrs. Sengupta was not crying anymore, she was staring at her husband's face which was looking peaceful and still. All the whispers and sniffing of relatives were not entering in her ears. She was looking at him with mind being somewhere else.

Tuli had just reached the apartment. She was kneeling on the floor with her face longingly looking at her father.

The overwhelming wrenching made her yelp , "baba, o baba" for some times. Then taking a hand of her father in her hand she placed her head on his head as her eyes gave up tears.

Shuvro didn't entered the room. Death was not new for him anymore. He stood at the doorway looking at the man's sleeping face and then his eyes landed on Tuli. He wanted to rush at her. Taking her in his arms he wanted to console her, saying everything was fine.

But he knew, nothing was fine, and was never going to be. The pain of loosing a parent is not something to pass by. The feeling of being an orphan in this world, was never gonna be replaced by anything. This pain was gonna haunt her till the end. And he didn't want to make false promises.

So Shuvro walked away from the place and went to Tuli's mama and kaku - Renuka's father, to talk about the arrangements of the cremation.

*

Searching for Tuli Shuvro reached at the balcony. She was sitting at the easy chair with a panjabee in her hand. He walked up to her and placed his hand on her shoulder.

Tuli's wet eyelashes jerked up as she looked up at him.

"I brought this panjabee this year for him... only one day, at the morning of Ashtami he wore this!" She spoke through a broken voice clutching the kurta in her hand "he was so happy!!!" The words came out in soliloquy and again gave up in lamenting.

Shuvro knelt down beside and her taking her in his chest he put his arms around her tightly.

Digging her face in his chest her welling tears continued wetting his shirt.

*

He let her cry until looking for them her mama came at the balcony. Looking at his niece the man's heart wrenched more. He used to love Tuli's father like the brother he never had and this girl crying here made a the tear he was holding up roll out of his eyes.

Shuvro looked up at him and soon the man walked out.

Burying his face in her hair he whispered her name quietly, "Tuli, Tuli! We need to go now." He held her as he said so. She refused and he mumbled again, "its time Tuli. We need to go."

"I will not go, I can't." She sobbed in a broken voice.

"He is your father Tuli. You need to go. You should."

"I can't Shuvro."

"You are his only daughter Tuli!" He told her. "You should Tuli."

She took a little time to realise what he was saying and then sat up, still holding the panjabee in her hands.

***

It turned to almost dawn to finish the cremation.

And till the very last she held Shuvro close to her. Her hand clung to him. He was there to firing the pyre with Tuli.

All the time Shuvro was in a idee fixe. The face of Shuvro's father was again and again coming in his mind. Looking at the ablaze pyre at one time the face of his own father and Tuli's father kind of got mixed in his mind. Suddenly tears howl down his eyes. Many words of Mr. Sengupta started coming in his mind. The man was always on his side supporting him in his and Tuli's marriage.

Looking at the pyre he snaked his arm tightly around Tuli, who was crying having her head on his shoulder - he made promise to the soul of the deceased man to be with his daughter, supporting her, and loving her, till his own last breath, once again...
