"Is he going to kill her?" I asked Thane, blinking up at him in complete shock. He was acting like he didn't just witness an Alpha and his Luna breaking each other's bones.

Thane did an awkward cough-laugh with an amused twinkle in his eyes. "They didn't go up there to fight, little one."

My mouth made an O-shape as I caught on to what he was implying.

I must have been blushing, but I suppose Thane decided to take pity on me and not comment on it.

"She killed so many people..." I whispered to Thane in a hushed tone as my arms tightened around him.

Thane winced. "Yes. It was necessary. I would have done the same."

"You don't get it, Thane. She killed the wolves like it was nothing. I saw her rip someone's heart out of their chest without hesitation," I insisted, not sure if he was quite grasping the severity of what I was trying to tell him.

"Ahh, yes. That is her go-to move," Thane said disinterestedly, and my mouth went agape. At my expression, he sighed. "Look, little one, I'm sorry you had to see that because I know violence upsets you, but I can't say I'm sorry it went down like that. I owe Ares immensely for all she's doing for us."

"All she's doing for us?" I questioned.

"Of course. She's the one training you for the challenge. That's why Cain is so on edge. He's leaving his mate here so she can train you," He explained.

I winced. Oh, frick. I really needed to catch my sexism better next time. I had assumed that Alpha Cain was the one who was here to train me.

"Don't worry," Thane tucked my hair behind my ear. "She won't be as rough with you as she was with Cain."

I was about to ask him if he was sure about that, because anyone who could break an Alpha's wrist and stab him without flinching surely has no boundaries, when a knock on the front door interrupted.

"Come in," Thane called out, and moved us to sit on one of the couches in the living room, orienting me so I was sitting up in his lap.

A small elderly man walked through the doors and approached us.

"Alpha, Luna," He murmured and ducked his head in submission. Technically, I wasn't the Luna (yet, hopefully), but I didn't have the heart to correct the old man. He was so cute and looked like a baby turtle.

"Onyx, this is the best pack healer in North America, Milton," Thane grinned at the old man, who returned a toothy smile.

"What do we have here?" Milton asked, inspecting my hands as he squinted. "Wolfsbane exposure? It doesn't look like it penetrated deep into the skin, so I'm assuming it was a low concentration? Perhaps in gas form?" Milton's warm, wrinkled hands were incredibly soft and felt nice, even on my tender flesh.

"Correct as always, Milton," Thane conformed. "What can you do about it?"

Milton made an unintelligible comment as he sorted through his leather bag. He pulled out a tiny mason jar with a green substance inside.

He opened the jar and rubbed a small amount on my hands. Instantly, the blisters began to shrink and the skin burned less.

"Very good then," Milton muttered with a smile. "Just put it on again at night and you'll be good as new, Luna."

I nodded and couldn't help but giggle at the cute little man. Strange, but adorable.

"Thank you, Milton. It was a pleasure as always," Thane nodded at him, and he scurried out of the door like a little mouse.

When he was gone, Thane chuckled. "He's a little... Odd. But I've known him since I was a child and he's healed me more times than I can count."

I was about to ask more questions about healers when Alpha Cain and Ares descended from the staircase. As they got closer, I could see the fresh bite marks on her neck, with some even having a tiny bit of blood leftover.

"My apologies for threatening to take Ares back," Alpha Cain gruffly stated. "Of course it would be her honor to train your future Luna." He always sounded so serious, I wasn't sure if he meant his words or not.

Thane, however, seemed to believe he was being genuine. "No worries, cousin."

"Onyx," Alpha Cain's gaze shifted to me and I instantly stiffened and subconsciously cringed back into Thane. "Are you okay?"

"Y-yes?" I said, hoping he got the answer he wanted.

Thankfully, his attention turned back to Thane. "Thane, you should have a pack doctor check her out, just in case," Cain suggested, and my heart warmed slightly at his words. Despite the rumors I've heard about the Blood Alpha, he didn't seem to be so bad. After all, it seemed like his mate had initiated the violence that ensued.

Thane looked irritated at being told how to care for me, and showed it by rolling his eyes. "I did, while you and your mate were fu-" Don't say it, don't say it , I thought to myself while cringing from embarrassment. "I mean, canoodling, your mate."

Canoodling? What kind of old geezer says the word canoodle?

"I got a healing salve from my pack's best healer," Thane elaborated. "Her hands are good as new."

Cain didn't respond, instead looked at his mate irately. She glared at him, and he glared back as their eyes went glossy.

Thane noticed as well and called them out. "Seriously? Are you guys already arguing again?"

Cain shifted his glare to Thane, and I couldn't help the giggle that escaped my mouth. That wolfsbane must have went to my head, because I would never dare to do that under normal circumstances.

"Is something funny, little wolf?" Alpha Cain asked me, his eyes softening slightly.

Digging myself into a deeper hole, I responded, "Actually, yes. What Thane said was funny because you do both argue a lot from what I can tell." And may the Moon Goddess help me, because I giggled once more.

I saw Alpha Cain's lips turn upward for a millisecond, something I never thought I would see in my lifetime. "Yes, I do suppose we fight a lot."

I had to bite my lip from laughing again. What a bizarre couple those two are. Strangely, I could see how it worked. Imagining the Blood Alpha with any other girl was a terrifying thought.

"Oh, but when I say that, you threaten to rip my spine out and beat me with it," Thane scoffed, but I could tell he was amused.

The wheels in my brain started spinning. I mean, logistically, is that even possible? I asked Cain for confirmation, and to my disappointment, it wasn't really that feasible.

"Seriously, what were you guys arguing about?" Thane intrusively asked and played with a piece of my hair. God, Thane. You can't just ask Alpha mates who try to kill each other what they're arguing about, it's rude.

"Training," Alpha Cain answered, making my ears perk up in interest. "My mate seems to think that it would be prudent to train her starting now."

"No," Thane immediately rejected the idea, which made Ares send him daggers with her eyes.

"Why?" I whined. I wasn't particularly a fan of training, but I couldn't deny the incredible opportunity of getting to train with the Blood Luna, especially after seeing how effortlessly she could kill people.

"Onyx," Thane said my full name sternly and I knew he was about to lay into me. "In case if you forgot, you were nearly poisoned to death a few hours ago. You are not doing anything remotely active until tomorrow at the earliest, and that's only if the pack doctor clears you."

I glared at him. What a fun sponge.

"Don't start with me on this, Onyx. This is not a battle you will win," Thane said and the warning was clear.

I had never heard him sound so stern, so I decided not to push him on the issue.

His eyes softened when I nodded and he squeezed my hand. "Who's hungry?" He asked.

The rest of the night went by surprisingly smoothly. The Blue Moon and Blood Lake wolves meshed surprisingly well, and it actually appeared that they knew each other well. I thought it was kind of sweet, and when I told Thane so, he rolled his eyes at me but didn't disagree.

The only issue was the Gamma of Blood Lake, Lucas. He was nearly as big as Alpha Cain, and just as serious. At least Cain made the attempt to talk to me. Lucas rarely said anything, even to Blood Lake wolves.

I had to admit, I felt much better with the Blood Lake wolves around than I thought. I had assumed all of them were bloodthirsty heathens, but the only one who really initiated any violence so far was Ares. She was also incredibly stoic and obviously didn't talk, but I could see a slight softness present only when she was touching Cain. Obviously I would never tell her that, because I like my heart being an internal organ as opposed to external.

"I like them," I told Thane as we crawled into bed for the night once the festivities were over. "They're nice."

"Did I or did I not tell you not to worry?" Thane teased me and tweaked my nose.

"You did, however, neglect to tell me that the Alpha and Luna almost kill each other every hour," I couldn't help but smile. It wasn't funny as they were arguing due to the sheer rage they could both possess, but they always seemed to come to some kind of agreement.

Thane shrugged. "It's way more fun when you see it the first time."

"How did they meet?" I asked, but my eyes were heavy with drowsiness.

Thane chuckled as he pulled me on to his bare chest. "I'll tell you about it another time, little one. You should go to sleep. I'm sure Ares will be waking you up bright and early for training."

I grumbled. Yeah, cause I love being woken up at the crack of dawn to have my ass kicked.

Despite my trepidation about the approaching training session, I couldn't deny that after meeting the fiery, competent Luna, I slept much better with renewed hope that I wouldn't be killed at the challenge.
