Chapter  |  Looking For You

Part  |  Two

I stared out the window looking for anybody who looked like they went by the name Ruth, but came up empty handed. I even looked around for John, but I didn't see him either. This game of his was already getting old and annoying. What made it even more annoying was the fact that I didn't know why John was doing this.

As soon as the chauffeur opened up the door for me, I immediately shot out the car and stormed into the Starbucks. I stood behind a couple in line ordering, waiting impatiently for them to finish so could ask about this Ruth person. When the couple received their order and moved out of the way, I didn't waste any time asking about Ruth. "Hi, do you guys have somebody who goes by the name Ruth and works here?"

The girl at the cash register gave me a small smile before slowly shaking her head. "No I'm sorry to say, but I do remember a woman who just ordered that went by the name Ruth."

I grinned widely at the girl. "Great, where is she?"

The girl hummed to herself and squinted her eyes as she looked around the store for Ruth. Finally her eyes landed on a lady in the back sipping on what looked to be an espresso. "There she is."

I smile and give her a small nod. "Thank you." I quickly walk up to the lady in the back, but before I could even get her attention she looks up at me with a smile. "Are you by any chance Ruth?"

"Yes I am, and you must be the famous Stephanie Hersh. John likes to talk my ear off about you. He usually talks about how pretty you are and how great your personality is, and to be honest I didn't think you would be this pretty," she says. She then picks up her espresso before saying, "Definitely pretty."

I feel the blush rushing to my ears and cheeks and look down at my feet for a quick moment. "Well thanks, but I got a message from somebody who I assume was from John, to come here and find you. Now that I found you, I was kind of hoping you could tell me what this was all about and why he hired somebody to drive an hour away from the city just to come to Starbucks."

She chuckled quietly before reaching inside her bag sitting next to her in the booth before pulling out a white polka dotted dress wrapped up in a plastic bag. She then reached back inside the bag and pulled out what I assumed to be shoes. "There you are. Now, go downtown to Libby's and ask for any hairstyle you'd like. Make sure it's done by Brandy."

She handed me the dress and shoes before facing forward in her seat. She just sat there sipping at her espresso while I just continued to stand there with a shocked expression on my face. Did John just seriously send me out the city just to go back in? I just shook my head before quickly storming out and climbing back inside the limo. I couldn't wait to find John so I could ask him what the meaning of this was. But that's when I realized that I didn't have to find him when I could just call him. I quickly opened up my purse and pulled out my cellphone before quickly dialing John's number. I was immediately sent to voice mail.

"Ugh, this is getting really irritating!" I groan as I cover my face with my hands. I sigh before moving my hands and looking down at the dress and shoes. I removed the dress from its hanger and the plastic before quickly changing into it. I opened the box of shoes and found a pair of red louboutin's before slipping them on my feet. At least the new outfit gave me a slight clue as to what was going on. Maybe John had some romantic dinner planned.

About an hour later I was already standing at the front desk talking to one of the ladies who worked at Libby's. After asking for the hairstyle, I asked her about Brandy.

"By any chance, do you think Brandy could do it?

The girl's eyes widened before she quickly came around the desk and took me by the arm. She pulled towards the back of the store and until we stopped in the middle of a room in the back. The room contained a chair, sink, and a bunch of cabinet probably full of hair supplies.

The woman from the front desk gave me a huge smile before gesturing towards the chair. "You may have a seat. Brandy will be in here in just a moment."

Not even three minutes later, I woman with long wavy dirty blonde hair came in and shut the door behind her. "You must be Stephanie." I nod and she smiled before continuing. "John told me you were a cute one. Didn't believe him at first, but now that I'm actually meeting you...."

I didn't understand why everybody kept saying that. Another thing I didn't understand was why John had so many female friends that I did not know about. This was all confusing.

Brandy must have noticed the confused look on her face because she soon started to tell me who she was to John. "I'm his cousin if you're confused. Ruth is my sister. Twin actually."

Thinking back to Ruth I now noticed the resemblance between Brandy and her. They both had the same dirty blonde hair and deep blue eyes, the same deep blue eyes that John had. "Oh, I didn't know, I just thought---"

"We were his friends? Please, John doesn't have friends. There are very few people he can tolerate, and you're obviously one of them," she said as she began taking supplies out of the cabinets. She then came towards me with the supplies in her hand and a smile on her face. "Now sit back and let me work my magic."

About two hours later, I looked like a different person. My hair was curled and pulled over into a side ponytail, my nails were painted the same color as my shoes, and my makeup was done perfectly. I was now standing outside looking up at the starry night sky still wondering what John had planned for me. After Brandy had finished with the makeover she told me my next stop was a flower shop right around the corner from where we were. This time I was supposed to pick up an order for myself.

"Hello," I said to the man who was behind the cash register counting the money in the cash register.

He looked up at me and smiled. "What can I do for you?"

I smiled back. "Well I'm here to pick up an order for myself. Stephanie Hersh."

He looks shocked for a second before he finally holds up one finger and heads into the back. He comes back out a minute later holding a single red rose. "There you are. You enjoy the rest of your night." He winks and continues to count the money. I would have stayed and asked about that wink, but decided against it.

As soon as I'm standing outside again, I realized that the man hadn't told me where my next stop was. I stop in front of the chauffer and turn towards the flower shop. "He forgot to tell me where our next stop was. I need to---"

"No need to ask. I already where our next stop is," he says as a huge grin formed on his face, causing wrinkles to appear on his face. Before I could ask where our next stop was he was already gesturing to the open door. I sighed before climbing into the backseat.

About five minutes later we pull up in front of Madison Square Park. The beauty always catches my every time I visit this place, but not this time. This time it was something else, or somebody I should say.

John stood there wearing a black suit with a huge smile on his face. He was surrounded by lanterns and rose petals.

Even after this long and wild goose chase I couldn't stop the smile from forming on my lips. It was a beautiful sight and all, but I was still confused as to why he just sent me on a trip all around New York City only to find him just standing there in a park.

"John, what is all this, and why did you just send me on a wild goose chase?" I ask as I slowly approach him. I can tell he's more focused on how I look then my words because of the way his eyes traveled up and down my body.

"Wow Stephanie, you look beautiful," he says as he takes both of my hands.

I smile. "Thanks, but why am I here? What was the significance behind all of this?"

His face quickly goes serious, but I can still see a hint of playfulness and love in his eyes. "Stephanie Hersh, when I first laid eyes on you I knew I just had to have you. You looked so stunning and beautiful in just that simple red jacket, and white Nike's," he says with a small chuckle. He clears his throat before continuing. "Shortly after we started dating, I started to fall, and I fell hard. The night I told you I loved you, I was scared that you wouldn't say it back because, shockingly enough, you have been the best thing that has ever walked into my life Stephanie Hersh. Even on my worst days, you still manage to make me happy and put a smile on my face even if you do something as little as laughing. I love how you're so determined and focused, and I just love everything about you. These past couple of months I've thinking about what if we became more than what we are now? What if we were ready to take the next step? And I just told myself I would never know unless I took a chance."

By the time he's finished with his speech, tears of joy are streaming down my face. "John, are you saying what I---"

"Yes Stephanie I am. I want you to be there when I wake up every morning, but I don't want you to just be my girlfriend. I want to be able to say you're officially apart of my family. I want you to be my wife Stephanie Hersh. I want you to marry me."

Before I could say anything else, he slowly gets down on one knee and pulls out a small box containing a silver ring covered in diamonds. I let out a sob mixed with a laugh.

He grins up at me causing more tears to rush down my face. "Stephanie Hersh, will you marry me?"

After the words leave his mouth, the sobbing become uncontrollable, but I knew it was for a good reason. It takes me a while to calm myself and nod my head. "Yes, John. I'll marry you."

His grin widens before he reaches for my left hand and slowly places the silver ring on my ring finger before planting a kiss on top of my hand. He looks up at me as he slowly gets up from his kneeling position. "Stephanie, words can't even explain how happy I am right now."

I laugh just a few tears slip from eyes once more. "I don't even know what to feel right about now."

He smiles and places a quick peck on my lips. "You know I love you right?"

Of course I did. I knew that this man would never hurt me and that he would always love me no matter what. I knew that today was the day we turned over a new leaf, but I sure didn't know that this was just the calm before the storm.

I nod my head slowly and peck him on the lips this time. "Yes, and I love you too."
