Bayside comes into view as my best friend, Olivia, drives us towards our small town. Looking to my right, I can see the ocean. People are surfing, the parking lot is packed, and food trucks line the curb.

Man, I've missed Bayside.

"You miss it, don't you?"

I look at Olivia, noticing the permanent smile she's worn since Jaden Coleman, her longtime boyfriend, proposed to her. I couldn't be happier for her, but coming back to Bayside was bringing up past memories. Some good and some bad.

"Yeah, I miss the adventure here, but maybe not some of the people," I say honestly. She gives me a look and I know we're thinking about the same person.

I haven't seen him since the day he broke up with me. The day before I left to go to college. It happened about three years ago, but the memory is still fresh. It feels like it happened yesterday. It hurts.

The 'Welcome to Bayside' sign passes us as Olivia drives to her house. Familiar buildings come into view as we get closer to the square.

As we enter the square, I can't help but smile. It brings back so many memories. Usually the square is one of the busier places in Bayside, but today it isn't. Probably because a lot of people are in church since it's a Sunday morning.

I'm pulled from my thoughts when Olivia slams on her brakes. She's always been a great driver.

Not.

"Olivia!" I yell.

"Dude!" she yells back, giving me her sassiest attitude. "There's a kid in that tree!"

She points to a tree that's on her side of the car. I can't see so I get out to get a better look. Olivia comes to stand next to me as we look up into the branches up the giant Oak tree. Sure enough, a kid is up there.

"Help!" the little boy yells.

"Hey, hey! I'm here," I call up to him.

"Like you're much help," Olivia whispers. I give her a dirty look and she laughs. "I'll call for back up." She walks back towards the car for her phone and dials a number.

"I'm coming up!"

The boy nods his head, probably too scared to do anything else. To give myself some type or adrenaline, I roll up my nonexistent sleeves. I walk up to the tree and freeze.

I look up and realize how high up the boy is. That's a long way up there.

"Olivia! I need you to give me a boost."

She walks over to me with a skeptical look on her face. "You sure you should climb? We can wait for backup?"

"No, the boy needs my help."

Olivia mashes her lips, trying not to smile. "Mhm."

She lowers her hands for me to step onto. As I do, she gives me a boost up. My hands grab the first branch and I try to use my upper body strength to pull myself up. It doesn't work.

I really need to start going to the gym...

My legs are dangling now. "Olivia, I need help."

Olivia puts her hands on her hips and huffs. "You need to start going to the gym more."

You don't say...

She walks underneath me and places my feet on her shoulders. Since she's taller, her height gives me the extra boost I need to get up onto the branch.

"I'm coming," I call to the kid again.

His little head pokes down. "You're moving super slow."

The nerve of this kid.

I can hear Olivia laughing, but choose to not look down. Maybe someone who's scared of heights shouldn't be climbing a tree.

The branches start to get skinnier as I climb higher, making my heart beat quicker. Finally, I reach the boy.

"Hey, I'm Vienna." My hands have started to turn white as I death grip the branch I'm sitting on. "Um, so, what's your name?"

"Adam," he mumbles.

"So, Adam. Why are you all the way up here?"

He looks around him. "I wanted to see the view."

Very carefully, I look around too. The view up here is amazing. You can see the beach, the high school, and different neighborhoods with this view.

"It's pretty cool," I say to fill the silence.

"Yeah. Can we get down now?" he asks with a bored expression on his face.

Reminds me of someone I refuse to mention.

"Oh. Right."

With shaky arms, I climb to the branch that's directly below him and position myself so my legs are wrapped around it. Adam lowers himself when I hold my hands up in the air, praying we don't fall. We continue to do this about half way down the tree.

Then, Adam decides to yell in my ear.

"Firetruck!"

I lose my balance as I'm climbing to the next branch below him. My foot slips and my chest hits the branch hard.

Ouch.

"My boobies," I mumble, feeling the pain in my chest.

"My mom says I'm not allowed to say that word."

I look up at Adam as he laughs, swinging his legs with not a care in the world. "Mm." I grunt in pain. "You probably shouldn't."

"Vienna!"

I know that voice.

Smiling, I glance down at Jaden, never happier to see him. He pulls out his phone from the front pocket of his firefighter uniform and holds it up.

"Jaden! What are you doing?" I ask.

"Taking pictures. Hudson's going to love this."

Of course he would be sending this to my brother to laugh at.

After he's done, he walks closer to the tree. "V, we need you to climb down."

Is he crazy?

"Do you see the position I'm in?" I'm barely hanging on and the cramping feeling in my chest is only a reminder. My nonexistent upper strength is the only thing stopping me from falling fifteen feet.

"Just lower yourself to the branch below you."

"Just get the ladder," I argue back.

"You're in the way."

He has a point. It's pretty narrow up here.

With my heart still pounding in my chest, I work my way down another five feet. I try to put my foot on another branch, but nothing but air is there.

"There's not a branch there!" Jaden yells.

But it's too late. I start to fall.

I close my eyes tightly, waiting for the impact of the ground, except it never comes. Instead, strong arms are holding me.

"You can open your eyes now," an unfamiliar voice says.

Slowly, I open my left eye to see Jaden and Olivia looking at me with worried looks. Then I open my right eye and look up at the handsome man that's holding me.

Holy moly he's hot.

He winks, grinning at me.

Olivia interrupts the moment by running up to me. "Vienna? Are you okay?"

The stranger whose caught me puts me on the ground. He's in a dark blue uniform that looks identical to Jaden's. Instead, his name tag says Caleb.

"Vienna?"

I shake my head out of my daze and look at my best friend. "Yeah, I am." I look at Caleb next. "Um, thanks for catching me."

He winks again. "Anytime." Still looking at me, he crosses his arms over his chest, making his biceps look even bigger. "So, you're the Vienna that breaks hearts?"

What in the world?

In front of me, Jaden moves his hand in front of his throat, trying to get Caleb to stop talking.

"What do you mean?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.

Caleb glances from me to Jaden. He stiffens before looking back at me. "Oh, nothing."

Before I can argue, I feel a punch in the back of my leg. It's Adam. "Thanks for trying to rescue me!"

He runs off as I yell after him. "I got you half way down the tree!"

Where did he come from anyways, I ask myself. I turn around and freeze.

It's not the ladder that makes me freeze, but the person who helped Adam down.

Axel Sanders. The boy that broke my heart.

A weird look takes over his handsome face when our eyes connect. He looks even better than he did in high school, if that's even possible. He's more filled out now, even a little bit taller I think.

"Hey, Conley," he says.

The ways he says it so nonchalantly makes me want to punch him in the face.

A/N: AHH! This chapter was so much fun to write. I can't wait to write the next few since I already have them planned out. ;) If you're coming from 'Inevitable Moments,' I hope you enjoy this book!
