Tell me how many times you hear this occur in fiction.  A person of royalty, almost always a princess, gets kidnapped by a dragon or evil wizard.  A random knight is assigned to save her and with a party gathered during their travels, makes it to the evil castle where the rescue is to take place.  The knight enters the castle and fights the one being blocking them from the princess, always winning.  Once they win, the knight rescues the princess and they get married or start dating.  Now that this storyline is covered, what is the official number of times you've seen this plot done?

If the answer was sixty thousand times, congratulations.  You spotted a cliché.  What makes this a cliché are two things; the over-usage of it in media and that the knight always wins.  Having the same story told to you over and over again can get old really fast, especially with this type of plot.  To make these stories fresh again there is only one thing you can do; change up the story.  Instead of the knight winning, how about he is unable to win the fight and the princess ends up finishing the brawl herself.  Also, you could make fun of the storyline, something a lot of people, including Disney now, have done.  To get a clue about what you could do to mix up the tale, just watch any parody of fairytale stories such as the first Shrek film or check out some of the more recent Disney movies.  Maybe you could be the one to create a refreshing story for this idea that could be the next blockbuster.
