Back in the time of only about thirty years ago, werewolves were feared by people.  They were a constant part of the darkest European folklore, and were a staple horror movie monster.  The idea of becoming a heartless beast during the three days of the full moon terrified people, and for good reason.  They were bloodthirsty creatures, only hunting for sport with its prey of choice being humans.  Movies such as An American Werewolf in London and The Wolfman made the werewolf a figure to be feared in the creative world of fantasy.  However, that all changed when every single thing that made werewolves cool in the first place were ditched in favor of creating young adult romances with wolf shape-shifters.  No longer was the werewolf scary, and instead a joke to the lovers of any great horror story.

This I find a strait out tragedy.  I've always loved werewolves for their strengths in the horror and fantasy genre as a feared creature of the night.  As of recently, that wish has not been coming true for me, reducing the list of great werewolf stories to a select few.  Only a few modern stories have gotten the idea right, such as the Demonata series or even the Underworld movie series.  I am fine with shape-shifters existing, but not with the wrongly named title of a werewolf.  The best thing to do in order to bring back the fearsome creature of the past is to return it to its night-exclusive role, connecting the beast with our innermost fears.  Adding romance in a little bit is alright, but as long as it isn't the main focus for these stories.  I just want more scary werewolf stories and maybe it is still possible if a few creative minds play around with the idea a little bit.
