Most people do not see themselves as perfect human beings.  Either because of self-criticism or awareness of a certain flaw in their character, many people know of the flaws they might have that could be up for improvement.  And that is actually great.  Being aware of when you are in the wrong is a great tool to have.  From making a mistake or two, we try to correct it and grow from the experience.  The famous saying "You learn something new everyday," could not be more true.  Living without vanity is a skill to be blessed with.  The same goes for characters in literature.  Those who have a few bad traits to balance out their overall good behavior tend to make some of the best kinds of characters.

So if having a few character flaws is a good thing, why are many humans in literature depicted as complete monsters towards a persecuted group or person?  Although realistic in a sense, does there have to be an angry mob every time someone is revealed to be a werewolf or a Titan?  Why can there not be an exception to this rule once in a while where the character is accepted despite being different than others?

To me, a well explained acceptance to the hidden ability of a character is much better than seeing them get chased for eight miles with pitchforks and torches.  Darren Shaw's Circus Du Freak serves as a great example of this idea.  The characters, mostly superhuman vampires or humans with genetic differences such as having snake-like scaly skin, are accepted with open arms.  In fact, the show these characters preform in is beloved by the humans who find out about it.  They watch the show for the cool abilities these characters preform versus seeing them for being freaks.  It is a nice exception to the normal angry mob that more authors should incorporate once in a while.

Who said being perfect was a good thing?  The best people and characters are those with the most quirks.  Why be beautiful when you can have a cool talent that helps both you and other people?  I would much rather like to transform into a helpful humanoid wolf every full moon than be popular just because I am pretty.  There is no need for humanity in real life or literature to be so spiteful of those who are different.  Sometimes just getting along is a much better policy.

So instead of getting the pitchforks, get to the idea of a compromise.  Humanity can be cruel, but when we come together the best sides of ourselves can come out.
